I never had a cervical exam during either of my pregnancies unless it was that very first exam after finding out you’re pregnant or I was in labor 🤷🏻♀️. I’ve heard it’s unnecessary outside of that. I would pass on this honestly, unless it’s some extreme urgent need.
What's the usefulness of a check at 36 weeks if you're not planning induction at that point for medical reasons/imminently worried about preterm labor? A well trained OB can usually determine if the baby is head down based on Leopolds manuevers alone. Ultrasound is also useful and non-invasive. Curiosity kills the cat. Let's use our brains and not just do what the previous generation told us to do.
Question: I had one last week (36wks), the procedure was normal but I'm quite pissed (was not warned about the potential pain and following pelvic cramps on my way home). Seriously, why can't an endoscopy be used to assess cervical dilatation, can't an image just be taken (less invasive and more precise)? no finger can measure thickness objectively, come on. Endoscopy or any other tool (ultrasound, optical imagery) less invasive and less painful, with all the devices we have today. Please, I will really appreciate not to be fingered! We can send a man on the moon since the 60s, and Hubble can take a picture of most remote planets but in 2020 they still can't take a picture of that inner ring of mine. We are not cows!
I had very different cervix check experiences depending on who was doing it. I had a female doctor do it at 36w and it was super uncomfortable, and two male doctors who did it at 37 and 38w and it didn't hurt at all. Then a CRNP did it at 39 weeks and omg it was so uncomfortable, she actually suggested I reconsider my desire for a drug free birth because of my reaction 😑 They also stripped my membranes at 40w and I had no idea they were going to do it! I did end up going into labor that evening. I was 2cm dilated and 90% effaced when they did it
Thanks for sharing. My at home midwife did my cervix checks and they were SO PAINFUL and then when I was at the hospital the midwife there did a cervix check and I barely felt it. The first check I wasn't dilated and the second one I was 6 cm dilated... It makes me wonder if it was the person who just sucked at doing them or if it was that I was more dilated so it didn't hurt as bad. I also think my midwife tried doing a sweep without telling me. I really dislike that they think they're being helpful but not being honest about it.
After cervix checkup in 36 weeks I started bleeding for 2 days .3rd day started pain afer sometime leaking membrane from vagina I went to hospital the doctors suggested it should be done c-section delivery to much painful .so don't do mistakes to go and check ur cervix examination
I don't mean to scare anyone, but getting a cervix check was painful, with the doctor checking and feeling his nails. The cultures test was uncomfortable and a little painful. I actually saw, what they call old blood, a brown discharge for a couple of days. It freaked me out. I just want to have a natural child birth. This video was helpful, now I want to go ask my doctor have I dilated. If that's how you say it lol I'm due in a couple of weeks. Excited and ready for the baby already.
Dang, imma make Sure when they do mine I'll check their nails first and decide if I should go ahead lol. If any Dr that do these exams need to cut their nails.
Great video, I now feel more comfortable knowing what to expect... Thank you so much for taking your time and sharing your knowledge, God Bless You! :)
You seem like a very good doctor. My doc checked my cervix today and hurt me😢 i screamed a bit too he just went in with his fingers hard and pushed up fast that it was all done within 3 seconds and it hurt me.. he was rude he ask me if I was still sure about having a normal delivery... like trying to say that I can’t handle pain. And it was just bad. Wish he was more understanding 😢
WORLD OF YIZZEY zYou are just plain stupid for having a male doc. Anywho, pregnancy is normal and shouldn’t be treated as a disease and I would never degrade myself to anyone especially to male ob/gyns , even if I was really sick!!!
Sandra David same here! I would NEVER let a male physician touch me below the belt. I think for a man to want to be an OB, they’re a pervert. Out of all the specialties you can specialize in, why vaginas? This doctor on the video seems like a perv as well. He probably likes to feel in control as he touches vulnerable women in the lithotomy position.
The cervical exam requires just sterile gloves and lubricant. I would not recommend checking the cervix at home. It is easy to reach the cervix but difficult to interpret what you are feeling. It generally requires multiple exams to train people how to gauge cervical changes. The exam is likely to be uncomfortable (if not downright painful) for your wife and it is doubtful you will gain any useful information. This is not so much a safety issue but a comfort issue.
@@ITS-yk5ky You need help. Some of the best OBGYNs I've ever had were men...There is nothing wrong with having male OBs. They're professionals like anyone else in the field, male or female.
At 36 weeks I was 1cm dilated. I think I'm getting it checked again tomorrow at 37 weeks 3 days. It didn't hurt me. I'm always afraid it will but then I think "okay I've been fingered before and it didn't hurt" I was checked at 33 weeks also and it didn't hurt at that time either
Good question. I check at 36 weeks to confirm that the baby is head down. This involves the same type of exam as checking the cervix. Most of my patients also want me to tell them if the cervix is dilated or effaced. If a patient is scheduled for a c-section I do not check the cervix at 36 weeks as the position of the baby is not important.
@@mariafox_astro because he’s a pervert like most male obgyns. Male obgyns LOVE the cervical exams. Won’t stop doing them no matter the evidence against it.
@@mariafox_astro Believe me. Transvaginal U/S wands are just as uncomfortable. I've had several. They had to get pictures of my ovaries during my last TV U/S and it was TERRIBLE. Cervical checks are uncomfortable, but they're not that bad.
I'm high risk and they checked me 34 weeks and I already started dilating I got checked again 35 weeks to check progress and I was even more so I was told to pack a bag. I go in again at 36 weeks to see if I'm 3cm now or if I stayed the same. For some it's a good way to know what is happening. Hopefully I helped answer your question. I'm not a dr though.
I'm almost 32 weeks pregnant and I had preterm labor about a week ago and I was 1cm dialed they stopped my contractions and was sent home but should I be concerned about my cervix dilating more or will it stop completely?
You seem so nice. My doc alredy did a vaginal xam (cervical xam itslf) to check infection symptoms when I was 33 weeks. Next week am 37 weeks and he is gonna do what you said. Now I know why he is gonna do it. But I already have small pain in that area and am scared about it
The cervical exam is very quick, it will take less than 10 seconds. You really don't need to be nervous about the exam it is fast and not too uncomfortable.
If we were to see you naked as you exited the shower, would it matter if it was only for 10 seconds or would your life be permanently marked with the remembrance? Our eyes would never forget.
EmilyLizLifeAnd Reborns The answer is absolutely NO. You can say I don't qualify for cervical cytology". They assume everyone a slut or the partner of one to justify this indignation. If you've never come into contact with HPV through sex you are completely safe from ever needing to be tested. The lifetime risk is 0.68% of all women will die from cervical cancer or was it be diagnosed. Go look it up. I'm 51 and have never had a pap. Never plan to now that I'm educated.
Well, for me, I would want to be checked when I'm in labour or when starting to have contractions. Too early, I don't see much point of checking cervix before labour starts or before due date.
It is one of those funny words that is often pronounced "incorrectly" in medical circles. It is generally pronounced with 3 syllables outside of the medical field. In medicine, either pronunciation is considered acceptable. Another example of this is the word centimeter, many people in the medical community pronounce it "sontimeter".
I’m 39 weeks and they can’t check my cervix because it’s too high. What should I do? The babies head is low and they could feel it but they said I need to wait for my cervix to go down. I’m contracting a lot so at this point idk what to do
Thanks for pointing this out, I never realized that this pronunciation sounds so incorrect to my patients. I will make an effort to pronounce it in the standard way from now on.
Why do you have to figgit with cervix in 36 weeks why cannot you check at 40 weeks that's means you docters want deliver.baby before time by disturbing the cervix that's not done 😠😡😤
OB is great. It is the only place in the hospital where people are actually happy to be there. I spend a lot of time in the hospital waiting for deliveries, WoW keeps me sane and occupied!
totally unnessasary are cervical exams chance of infection and premature labour are the risks they do not give any info when you will go into labour.ln the UK nothing like this is done women are left alone. Why is the US obsessed with performing these humiliating exams

Appreciate that he doesn't do it every week but you really don't even need it done a single time.

38w+1 1.5 cm dilated. Been 24 hours since the check and I'm still bleeding. Normal?
Why ladies can’t have any anesthetic for this test ? It looks painful!
Because the test should t be done at all.

my doctor told me i am 1cm dilated from outside but closed from inside. does that mean i m dilated or not?

Is it ok to have a membrane sweep at 39 weeks if I want to have a vback?
I got mine one done. It was totally fine little bit pain but I was totally fine
Ladies do your research if you have GBS. Membrane sweeping should be avoided.
What does it mean it your cervix is still high??
