This is the feeling that was missing from the following Matrix sequels. That feeling of immense dread and hopelessness you get when the skilled mentor Morpheus, idolized by everyone on the ship, gets beaten and bloodied so badly by an Agent. It establishes Smith as a legitimate threat and makes him look unbeatable.
I would argue the scenes where Neo is Blinded and Trinity dies in Revolutions sorta give this feeling as well, but it happens so late in the movie (like the final act) that it doesn't end up mattering for long.
Thank for saying exactly what I was thinking! In the match against Neo on the ship it's shown morpheous is no joke when it comes to fighting and has a deep understanding of bending the rules in the matrix. However, later he also states that agents are never to be fought head on and you will lose if you try to. This fight against Smith shows exactly just how dangerous agents are.
I don't agree completely, sure Neo in Matrix 2 and 3 could handle agents no problem, but other characters still struggled, like Morpheus vs Agent on the truck, he only won by luck and element of surprise in the end and Trinity almost died. Both of them were saved by Neo in the end, without him they would've been toast.
They had to have this scene. 1. To display the pure strength and brutality of agents. And 2. To help with Neo's character development. It's hard to be the one if Morpheus can defeat agents.
Yup, for the most part the threat of agents were "told, not shown". Morpheus being the one to fight and get absolutely wrecked by one agent after being lauded as the best fighter really sends the message home.
@@xxZerosumxx Yup but it was all destined to begin with... She already knew the outcome. That Neo would try save Morpheus and die only to be reborn as 'The One'. She just played her part.

Reloaded update: What's new? • We buffed Smith by granting him the ability to force balance other players to his own team. We hope this addresses the complaints. After all, if everyone is Smith then no one will be op.
Notes for Patch 2.3: We've added an auto-balance feature to the teams, we hope that this addresses concerns about Balance Issues regarding Team System.
Movie was so far ahead of its time. They way they built up Agent Smith was so good. Morpheus was manhandling Neo who was supposed to be the One yet was so outclassed and outmatched against Smith. Brilliant acting by Fishburne.
The best way to explain this is that in the real world, it would all be happening at the same time. In the cinematic world, you see different perspectives of what is supposed to be happening, to give flow and allow to the audience to digest what they're watching. If you haven't seen Hard Boiled - Break Down: Action Film Analysis by Rossatron, I'd recommend it, especially since Matrix takes some influence from John Woo films.
They both know basically they’re about to fight. Morpheus knows he’s basically committed suicide, and Smith knows he’s basically won the lottery. He has at his mercy the great Morpheus. The most wanted man of the resistance. Public enemy number one, only second in value to Neo, Smith has been trying to catch Morpheus for a very very long time. So he’s very satisfied knowing this is who’s on top of him. He knows there’s no way any human can escape an agent in such a situation. Agents are way more powerful than humans. Also considering the room they are in, and the police force that are there with him, he figures there’s no need to rush things. Also the director wisely chose to build suspense.
The fight choreography between Morpheus and Smith was pretty good. Cuts only when necessary--especially when attacks connect, but even then camera angled stayed at some parts when Morpheus landed a few. NO SHAKEY CAM. Combo strings had good rhythm. Great use of the environment/set, especially when Morpheus' head hits the toilet (ouch). This scene wasn't so much about showing the differences in skill, but the difference in power; who can do what. Morpheus can block and counter, but Smith hardly reacts to blows and is unstoppable. Not one to enjoy seeing the good guys lose, but I am fascinated with the effort Fishburne and Weaving put into this scene (none of whom had any martial arts background if I am not mistaken).
I think it adds to the quality of the scene. I miss many of the really good action movies that actually took their time. Like Escape from New York, Terminator and the like. No fucked up shaky cam, and nonsense cutting. Just the raw action scene to speak for it self. Those movies have been also very gritty and dirty in what they showed, particularly when a character was beaten a lot. When you say slow and heavy, I see it as quality and realism (kinda).
I think Airbag888 meant physically heavy in their movements. If i'm being critical their attacks are almost slow enough that they'd look kinda telegraphed, which makes the counters less believable. There's still all the great stuff Leidern mentioned going for it at the same time.
this is why i find the matrix so enjoyable to watch, while i cant stand most other action movies that cut CONSTANTLY for no good reason. really ruins it for me, i wish it wasnt the norm for hollywood action.
Tesla Death Ray - Movement in movies has to be exaggerated to look good on film and let the audience follow the action. You can find interviews from MMA fighters who work on movies talk about how they have to get trained to slow down and move "heavy".
The older this movie gets the better it gets personally. Not only the action, but the philosphies and comentary about the future gets more relevant everyday.
Was looking for this. It's completely unnecessary. Has no mechanical or tactical advantage. To me it's the first hint of Smith being corrupted by "human" sentiments. It was purely a show of dominance.
@@Leisurelee53 but something a system designed to manipulate humans could do. Just like T-1000 which doesn't need to do a finger wag, but does it anyway because he knows that provoque things on humans, a kind of responses he can take advantage of. Nevertheless, in Smith's case, actually it's because he's not even trying. He knows that having their master, the hackers were going after him. Escape now or escape later, doesn't change anything. He has already won in the moment Morpheus stupidly sacrificed himself for nothing in his perspective, which allows him to not waste processing power in something doesn't worth it.
Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving literally kicked the crap out of each other filming this fight. Both were left hurting when it was all said and done and I believe Weaving nearly broke his hand during this scene. Gotta give it up to both actors who even at that time were up there in age, for giving this 110%. Everyone did when it came to putting these great fight scenes together.
@@halleck3 I agree somewhat to what you're saying for sure.. however also keep in mind the training and prep work to put these sequences together with minimal cuts and trickery to splice together a fight choreography like these days especially in American action films. The way alot of action sequences are filmed now allows for guys like Liam Nielsen or much older actors to complete a fight scene that makes them look credible as that character, however it's done piece by piece, step by step with assisted cuts many more times that what is was used in movies like the Matrix or even The John Wick movies. Although I love the Taken films.. put Liam in a position of having to train to prep for long hard hitting choreography scenes with minimal cuts, itll be a much more challenging situation.
I believe Morpheus needs to "kiai" at his every block, counter and kick he could as he needed them to be at the fullest power to fight the agent's moves.
Not to mention his discombobulated facial expressions whenever he takes a hit. I love it when actors makes stupid looking faces instead of trying to remain looking pretty in the camera
The part where Smith slams his fists into the ground to bring himself to his feet is my favorite part. It's just so inhuman to lift yourself up that way, and with the drone sound it really lets you know this is a machine. Really the first movie will always be the best sooooooo many little things like this 👌
I love Morpheus’ battle cry before flying through the wall. I always thought he was summoning everything he had just to ensure everyone’s escape. Literally jumping ON Smith instead of taking a more advantageous approach like attacking from behind Smith, he just throws caution in the wind and sacrifices himself
From 1:33 when Morpheus landed on Smith until 2:20 when they started talking, were they just silently choking each other straight for almost a minute 🤣
Morpheus is Mr. Smiths target, at that point he honestly didn't care about the rest because if he succeeded in getting the codes off zion, they're all dead anyway.
It's shot sequentially to make sense in movie time, but I'm pretty sure that they were having this convo and fight at the same time Neo, Trin, and the rest were escaping.
Sean Taylor I don’t think so. Neo and Trinity were practically screaming at each other and Switch and Apoc were having a shootout a couple floors below, yet Smith and Morpheus were just whispering. My guess is that Morpheus applied all his strength to restrain Smith until he was sure his team had made it out safely, then loosened his grip and got his ass kicked. That’s a true Captain, sacrificing himself for his crew.
because smith wanted them to 'get away' - he wanted morpheus. There is an old saying, don't interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake, and smith thought they were.
jesus christ I still get the chills at 2:02 when Apoc and Switch pop up and take everyone out like machines. Their one tiny scene to shine, they were so awesome.
I wish they would've survived. I loved Apoc though the most. I kinda like the silent types cause if you piss them off they just burst and become badass
something that cool can happen only in a movie that isnt all about making the single protagonist look cool, while everyone else is just there. in modern meta of movies you would have neo and trinity do all the shooting and cool stuff
I love how they show Smith punching through concrete walls. While Morpheus did mention that Agents are capable of doing this, seeing it while they fight just shows how hard Smith hits Morpheus with every blow
For me this was way more intimidating than when he does it vs Neo. And not cause its the first time he does it, but because when he does it vs Neo it's a more cinematic scene, done in slow mo. Here it's full speed and just a part of the fight. It's more like 'I punch through walls before my breakfast' kinda vibe
Something about this fight chills me more than others in the series. For starters, Morpheus is well aware this could be the last thing he ever does and even he seems afraid, screaming as he prepares to give his life for Neo. At first, he seems reasonably confident when fighting Smith, taunting him as an act of resistance. After landing one hit, however, Smith lets him know it's futile by landing multiple hits on Morpheus. Smith's fighting style then becomes increasingly tank-like. He can dodge or block Morpheus' hits, but he doesn't always bother. He's also slow and heavy. His movements are stiff, but even in terms of him getting up from the floor, he moves like the rules don't apply and his face when he does signals a mix of contempt and possibly amusement. Meanwhile, Morpheus is desperately trying to buy the others some time to get out of there as they're fleeing through the decrepit walls. Fantastic performances from all involved.
@@Jay-ce2qu Not really, I think he was prepared from the moment he got the prophecy. The shout was to charge for wall break. It's not like he charged on agent immediatelly. They were lying on the floor for several seconds after he broke.
The choreography in this scene tells something new every time I watch it. Note how at 2:54 when Morpheus realises Smith can tank his standing punches he goes for a kick and then uses the momentum to throw a heavy cross punch with his whole body weight
To be honest I wondered that too during rewatches...I honestly think he maybe didnt on purpose since the dirt did fall on him directly solely...I think it was more ironic that he was the one who ends up sneezing when he in fact ratted them out on top of it. There's another little detail before they get into the walls where Morpheus was like "be calm, give me your phone.." and you can see Cypher pretend to scramble for it in his pockets but Trinity intervenes and gives her his very quickly instead. I like little details like that lol
@@Karl_Drogo55 he actually did it on purpose. Later that scene he pretends that he stumbled over something and keeps acting clumsy just so the crew gets less time to escape
Everything about this fight scene was excellent. The choreography wasn't overly flashy, and the actors did so much more than just act out their moves. You can see Morpheus's expressions progressively change from sharp at the beginning of the fight, to barely holding on and almost dazed as he gets beaten to a pulp. The facial expressions after every big hit really sold it too. It only lasts for around 40 or so seconds, but I feel like this was the best fight in the whole series. Props to the production crew and Laurence on this one. There's a reason I can remember this fight so much more vividly than the others.
It's so absurdly simple how they followed through with the threat Smith posed. Prefacing the fight is the incredibly subtle detail of Smith grinning wickedly with flared eyebrows right after he grabs Morpheus by the collar - he's not going to kill Morpheus, he's going to brutalize him and he's going to _enjoy_ it. The first major thing Smith does is multiply what Morpheus does to him: one headbutt earns three, and you see Morpheus visibly dazed just by that opening trifecta. Then, with a single punch, not only gets Morpheus off him, but launches the man back against the wall. Following that is the double fist-slam stand-up move, which reminds me so much of Dracula rising from his coffin, and the camera angle by the end of that shot makes it feel like he's suddenly looming over you. Lastly, after just standing there and letting Morpheus get in four punches and kicks, he flat-out stops Morpheus' fifth attack and puts him on the floor with two moves. Done. In sixteen seconds you know Smith is the real deal and Morpheus isn't walking away from this fight.
morpheus tryed his best,. he his tbe best martial art but smith the strongest of all the agent. why in matrix 2 reloaded upgrade agent took about 3 minutes to put morpheus down. smith took just 30 second to put him down.
@@mollies13 Agent Smith was self aware. The other programs and agents were content with their roles. I believe his understanding of the matrix on top of his passion made him a better fighter. I believe in the second film Morpheus had already fought an agent and knew Neo was on the way. His knowledge combined with his confidence made him a formable fighter in that moment. Before then, everyone was terrified of an agent.
One of the cleanest fight scenes ever made period. Camera angles, sound design, choreography, set design, stunts, editing, score and performances are all immaculate. Brutal yet such a brilliant fight scene.
This is a genuinely terrifying scene - you can feel that Morpheus is in true peril against Smith here - the person who guided Neo and the audience through the rules of the Matrix like a father is no match for the brutality and sheer force of an Agent. True tension here, still is unsettling to watch after all these years.
Also, when an Agent removes his shades willingly, other Agents take it as a sign that something is wrong with him. That happened in this movie and in Revolutions (even other Smiths recoil in horror when Oracle-Smith does it). I love how they love their shades so much. It's a quirk that you don't expect to see in a program.
After watching The Matrix 4, It was... meh, I had to come back to this.. This, is a brilliant movie. Action, music, acting, sound affects, no unnecessary slow mo. Just amazing This movie ages like fine wine.
That gut punch when they are so easily taken out by being disconnected in the real world by a traitor, shows that even if you are a badass in the Matrix, your still completely helpless in the real and to those you trust.
When I first saw this, it was so crazy to me how easily Morpheus beat Neo, then how easily Smith beat Morpheus. Just by comparison it indicated just how strong Agent Smith was, and set a precedent for later in the movie.
@@vexjaeger4314 I would have to agree with that, Neo was in my opinion nerfed beyond all recognition in all areas of his abilities. I suppose with the others it could be explained that with the help of and realisation that now they know for certain that the one exists it has given them more ability based on their belief, Morpheus also had a similar outcome against an upgrade but ultimately neither came out on top.
Dant e Nah... Lol Trinity got wrecked immediately man. For most of her fight she was getting thrown around through wall and slammed. She is dope for sure, but aside from Neo, Morpheus is the guy. Just the way he gets back up halfway through and literally shakes it off hahaha such a beast
@@lemmihilldrix1450 I don't agree, Trinity gave as much damage as Morpheus and took far more as well and carried on and she didn't have a sword to help.
I love the fight scene between Smith and Morpheus. It is not just some lazily written scene where punches are exchanged and then the bad guy wins. You can actually see from the start that the Agent is physically stronger and more resilient than a human Redpill. Morpheus is skilled, fast, improvises pretty well (the one-hand stand and double kick to the torso, or when he goes up in the corner), but the Agent simply has too much of a physical advantage. This is especially notable when he takes and shrugs off a couple of hits from Morpheus, then strikes fist against fist, and knocks him down onto the toilet. From that point on Morpheus is clearly getting more and more desperate, while Smith is simply shrugging off all his attacks and brutally overpowers him. Great scene!
I always liked the difference in fighting styles between the agents and the humans. The agents are like blunt instruments; they lack finesse because they don’t need it as their strength is enough to defeat any opponent. Although the humans (barring Neo) are no match for an agent, they fight using predominantly eastern fighting styles. From my albeit limited knowledge, I see eastern styles of fighting as less of a means to completely defeat your opponent and more of a means to attain discipline, personal defense, and enlightenment. Because enlightenment is the ultimate goal of Morpheus and his crew, as well as a major theme of The Matrix, it’s cool that this philosophy is reflected in not just their words, but in their literal fight against the agents. Although my characterization of eastern fighting styles may be incorrect, I feel as though the difference between how the agents and the humans carry themselves in a fight conveys to the audience their difference in mindset and goals.
The Agents are programs so not only do they have great strength but they are also limited in their "thinking" and ways to attack a situation. They lack finesse. They keep butting their heads at someone until they give up, literally and metaphorically speaking.
I think you're overimagining here. They chose eastern styles because they look cool. Nothing more, nothing less. It has nothing to do with underlying philosophy and all to do with kung fu movies being the rage at that time. Also you're mistaken about western styles "not being about defeating your opponent". That's just nonsensical. The purpose of any combat style is to defeat your opponent. That's what the word "combat" implies. A combat style that isn't meant to defeat your opponent is not a combat style by definition. Combat training is inherently about self improvement, because it takes a crapload of time to get good at it and to train your body to a point where you can use the style consistently. Eastern styles may put more emphasis on this, because that's in their culture, but it's not something unique to them. You won't argue that doing jumping ropes and throwing 5 kg balls for hours to train in boxing requires as much discipline as static holding pots with sand in Okinawan karate, right? You're also not correct about Morpheus and co. goals. Enlightenment implies searching and finding truth about something (the world, oneself, etc). Morpheus and the crew have already attained enlightenment by realizing that Matrix isn't real. There's nothing more to be enlightened about in this context, so how can they strive for it then? Their sole goal is Freedom now. Freedom for themselves (to be free from the raids by the machines) and for people who are still in the matrix. They're rebels, revolutionaries , not Buddhist monks. I'm not trying to attack you or anything, but it just felt that your points were so far off the mark that i had to add my two cents.
I like how at the end, Smith doesn't even bother knocking Morpheus out or apprehending him himself, he knows he has softened him up enough that the human police officers can arrest him now. Despite the asskicking he just received from Smith, Morpheus still puts up a fight before getting detained by the cops.
So, those cops at the end when Smith walks away literally saw him and Morpheus duke it out Kung Fu style and they're like: 'Yea, ok. I can roll with this. Nothing weird about that at all.'
i imagine they came after he was pretty much done with morpheus, because if i was one of the cops watching that i'd be muttering under my breath "what the fuck..."
Lol! That's too funny! It hurt my eyes when I saw that clip not too long ago. I couldn't watch anymore of it. That's a series I wish they had left alone at the first one. Taken was a good revenge flick, with the man trying to find his daughter.
I like how whenever an agent possesses a plugged in human, they don't just take them over and are in the same position the person was standing, but seemingly violently reconstitute the person to the position the agent wants to be in.
What I like most about this was Morpheus was the only human (other then neo) who went toe to toe with an agent and Actually did really well. He lost sure. but the agent had to use everything he had that wasn't human to beat one. and it devastated him to the point of a program break

Reloaded update: What's new?
• We buffed Smith by granting him the ability to force balance other players to his own team.
We hope this addresses the complaints. After all, if everyone is Smith then no one will be op.
Notes for Patch 2.3:
We've added an auto-balance feature to the teams, we hope that this addresses concerns about Balance Issues regarding Team System.
Movie was so far ahead of its time. They way they built up Agent Smith was so good. Morpheus was manhandling Neo who was supposed to be the One yet was so outclassed and outmatched against Smith. Brilliant acting by Fishburne.
I love that Morpheus is just laying on top of Smith for like five minutes before they decide to do anything
It was inside him
The best way to explain this is that in the real world, it would all be happening at the same time.
@@christopherlithgo2600 wtf

Felt a bit heavy and slow though when you watch it again. Good nonetheless

I remember this fight scene scaring me as a young teenager. The mood, the violence, the fatality of the situation. It's brilliant cinema.
Carlos Nieves Are you serious?
@@YardieSmoke1 yeah 100%. And also Lawrence Fishburne is allergic to dust, so he was a mess throughout on top of doing the choreography.
They were both under 40. I guess if you're a kid that's "up there in age," but hardly unusual for an action hero. But certainly a solid fight scene.
@@nicarlos73 I believe you when you mention the allergy, at 2:30 Laurence's eyes are red as shit. Good on them both, they outdid themselves.

Fantastic performances from all involved.
well observed👍

Well observed. I've watched this masterpieces for 22 years now and there's always more to catch

@@mollies13 Agent Smith was self aware. The other programs and agents were content with their roles. I believe his understanding of the matrix on top of his passion made him a better fighter.

"You all look the same to me!" Badass Morpheus is badass. I can relate.
One of the best movies ever made.
Pure gold...👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 when I'll also be able to look behind the tree 🥺 Ignorance is an assassin
Great observation! Was just thinking that after watching this scene and the scene in 2 where he fights an agent on the truck
Sir.... this is Wendy's.
2:57 that double kick was smooth AF
I like how at the end, Smith doesn't even bother knocking Morpheus out or apprehending him himself, he knows he has softened him up enough that the human police officers can arrest him now.
