- When the line, “I see dead people,” was uttered, writer-director, M. Night Shyamalan, secured his place in cinema. The Sixth Sense, which went on to earn two Academy Award nominations that year, paved the way for nearly three decades of Shyamalan’s original filmography, now known for its psychological thrills and plot twists. In his most recent feature, Knock at the Cabin, the screenplay is an adaptation of the Bram Stoker Award-winning novel, The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay, with themes the filmmaker found inspiration in.
During a family getaway, a couple, Eric and Andrew, played by Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge, take their daughter Wen (Kristen Cui) to a secluded cabin in the woods. While outside by herself, Wen is approached by a strange man who says his name is Leonard (Dave Bautista). At first, Leonard seems soft-spoken and kind, but when his “friends,” played by Rupert Grint, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Abby Quinn, emerge from the trees with weapons, this family vacation goes south quickly. These four harbingers tell the family they must make an impossible choice in order to prevent an apocalypse.
During the press tour for Knock at the Cabin, Shyamalan spoke with Collider’s own Steve Weintraub about taking on this project. In the interview, Shyamalan reveals how he almost wasn’t involved with the movie at all and how it eventually returned with him as the director. He explains why the movie doesn’t follow the novel beat for beat, how he worked with two cinematographers and natural lighting for a more “organic” feel, editing the script right up until the very last minute, and how the “degree of difficulty was the highest” of all his cameos to get into Knock at the Cabin. Shyamalan also discusses Apple TV+’s Servant and what movie ideas he has in the works.

love M. Night Shyamalan....his The Sixth Sense is the best. He was the original writer/director to tell this type of story.
M. Night is such a great filmmaker. One of my favorite directors and writer.
Like unironically?
Absolute genius, I'm a huge fan of M. night, and his tenacity
Crazy how Shyamalan can speak without opening his mouth 00:08
I love how open he is about his filmmaking process.
Keep em coming M. And ill keep on watching. Just got out of Knock at the Cabin and it's was good stuff. Love seeing Dave expanding his game 🙌
Agreed
He really made som masterpieces. Knock is good, but sixth sense, unbreakable and signs are masterpieces and nothing he made since can come close
Two of these were 100% plagiarized. He is a talentless thief.
@@valcarter5164 how are they plagiarized? didnt know this.
Signs will always be his scariest film and it’s honestly the scariest movie I’ve ever seen
Signs was an overrated movie and Unbreakable is his best work
Except that Signs is actually underrated and a masterpiece!
I don’t think Signs is his scariest movie. Maybe you’re right though considering his portfolio.
I will say while watching knock at the cabin i thought of signs frequently due to all the dialogue about whether whatever was happening was coincidence or not.
While I do love the movie signs. I don’t think that it’s his scariest film. In fact, there were some moments I laughed at some of the poor acting. I personally really like The Village. However, it’s tough to decide which is the best.
@chasehedges6775 i waited 20 years to be dissapointed by glass. Unbreakable was a masterpiece and so was split, but they ruined it with the ending. Those three couldve worked so differently together. The lets make a super hero movie without out making a super hero movie only worked once.
Such a dope movie like literal such a total genius
Really never taken time to watch m night interviews or anything, but I’m glad I watched this he seems like such a passionate filmmaker. I can definitely relate to his energy of wishing he could just figure out the movie ideas/structures faster 😂
Btw I watched Knock at The Cabin and I’m not going to be surprised if it ends up in my top 10 on the year. Really really good movie.
I love him!
Great interview!!
shya is a master! good interview
Unbreakable = One of the most underrated films of all time.
Boring, and undoubtedly stolen idea, just like signs, the village, and 6th sense. He's a talentless thief.
I’m sorry, he’s literally one of a kind! I’m obsessed with his mind. 😂 if he does a movie, be prepared to be blown away for sure!!! Literally one of a kind. Although I didn’t watch servant because of my beliefs, I was so bummed it was by him and I couldn’t watch.
Plagiarism incarnate. Steals stories from lesser known sci-fi of the 50's and passes it off as new. He's a fraud.
I love this guy !!!! Period!!! Any & everything he made I've seen!!!
His next movie is called The Vanishings at Caddo Lake so not sure why he’s secretive about the title when it’s online 😂
He is not directing it, just a producer
I spoke to someone who said they despised the film for giving credibility to religious fanatics who do dark deeds in the service of a god (so they say). Interesting take. It is true, of course, that the ultimate message of the film is that superior beings can demand sacrifices for no logical reason, rain death upon everyone if they don't get what they want, and we should play ball. In fact, from a certain POV, a homosexual sacrificed his homosexuality for the sake of the world. In the future, we don't see a partner for him but rather see him taking care of the woman in his life. Quite the win for Big Religion, I suppose. :)
Never understood why a new movie idea, concept or even a damn title has to be so secretive. 🙄
I can think of a few reasons why for non-IP scenarios and not well know franchises.
1. Competition - This industry is a business first, art second. You don’t want competition to this concept especially if it’s fresh and good.
2. Setting up for greatness/failure - People always have high expectations. If it turned out differently in a bad way, it could be a disaster. You could also build hype around it and let them speculate.
3. Incognito mode - No one will know. If the movie fell apart, then you don’t have to explain why. You won’t disappoint everyone as well. Just jump on to the next one.
Shymalan is one of the best and worst directors of all time.
Because he is not a great entertainer but neither a garbage director with no personnality. He is an artist who makes cinema so every creation is a proposition that you can like or not and that's why I love him
Never would say worst.
That goes for every director..what have you created
It’s not a good one one must say
This movie is the worst movie I've ever seen. I really liked the OLD movie but this was unbearable to watch
Wow Old was terrible and this movie was actually good. What are you on?
Since he ruined "Unbreakable" with "Glass", I absolutely refuse to watch his films anymore 🙅♂️
Ok bro
Yeah this one sucked too
@@Theguyguyguy not surprising 😆
SPLIT IS A MASTERPIECE
@@joehernandez3822 not "Glass" though
Lol this movie sucked. First shot of the whole film. Out of focus.
It is very much not out of focus…
