  • Hey Everyone!
    Part TWO, I couldn't condense it into one video without losing context lol!
    I have had a lot of questions about how I plan, execute, manage my monthly grocery haul, each month I share the process of breaking down all the bulk food, what and how I cook it all over the month and my thought process as I go. This two part series (it ended up too long for a single part!) is a really in depth chat and look at how I plan and execute and work out exactly what it is I buy each month, how I work out what needs to be processed first, and how it is going to feed my family for four to six weeks!
    Let me know any feedback, further questions, etc so I can try to cover everything that anyone wants to know! :D
    Buy Me a Coffee link as mentioned!

    Please leave any feedback in the comments! :D

    Hi Nyssa!
    So glad you came up in my yt feed. Also brilliant to have an aussie mum 'doin it real', and showing how it's done. Subscribed and followed your insta journey.
    I'm just up the road from you, but on the coast, and did what you have done, back in 86. Four kids, though, offgrid, ( before it was a 'thing' and ridiculously priced components, that we did without- homeschooled, grew and raised most of our veg and meat, processed our harevest, butchered onsite, cured and pickled, washed in a wood fired copper, cooked on a wood fired stove and thrived.
    Kids are all grown and out in the world now, and although no longer offgrid and downsized, still have the food forest, food gardens, chooks, still preserve and have backups in all areas for if or when grid goes down. Simplified living on a shoestring. 🤷‍♀️

      @OurSmallFootprint  2 года назад +1

      Welcome!
      We're working on removing our reliance on gas as we can and trying to move to wood for more cooking etc! Always an evolution of things to simplify and become a little more self sufficient! I so look forward to when our fruit trees are eventually bearing etc and with 20 acres the kids can stay or can find elsewhere to be lol! We'll see what the world does over the next few years! :D

    I work at a supermarket and it is the biggest killer of my food budget. I find because I am there and especially if I am hungry when I knock off and feel like a certain meal I can grab what I need easily(always extras too). I now have my food money in cash and once it is gone for the month we have to eat what is at home. I have found it has helped also with not buying on a daily basics because I can physically see the money going down.
    I am really enjoying your videos, thanks for sharing with us.

    Thanks for these two videos. I’ve watched quite a few of your videos and you have inspired us to stretch our shop. We have a local supermarket (expensive) and there is a much cheaper one in the next town, 45 minutes away. In comparison to your trip that’s nothing! We have been monthly shopping for two months now and have been amazed at the savings. We are nearly 70 and living on a pension, so every dollar saved is a bonus. Food is much more expensive here in New Zealand, so thank you for all the inspiration! Love to you and your family 🥰

      I love hearing stories like that Maureen, thankyou, When I started sharing what I was doing, it didn't seem such a big deal, but for some people it just made sense in a way it hadn't before and people have spoken to me about how much they saved! I did find it amazing the savings I could get, yes we still spend a fair bit on food, but we eat really well for a lot less than we were spending!

    I so agree that to some extent having to do without can be so good.
    I try not to drive but we do have a car. Kids especially younger one regularly complain when I don’t come by car to pick them up from school (even though I rarely do it, so Idk why she expects me to drive). Last year the car was out of action during the holidays so we walked everywhere, including multiple non-essential trips and not a single complain. I think they even really enjoyed it.

      There is definitely reasons to go places, but I think going somewhere for the sake of 'getting out of the house' is what we don't do anymore, we have 20 acres, animals and plenty of 'out of the house' things to do here, we don't need to travel to do them heh :)

    Not having favourite foods always available is excellent discipline for the kids. The lesson is expandable to all aspects of life. I also watch Hollar Homestead, they grow most of their food and Meg is a wonderful cook. They have 5 kids and homeschool too.

      It took a little while for them to figure out and understand the limitations of monthly shopping, but they have gotten there eventually, there's still some whinging when we run out of a few things and they have to substitute lol.

    That not every meal comment is spot on
    Running really late today grabbed a yellow tomato sauce out of the freezer (wasn't enough to can so I froze a couple of jars) tossed chicken thighs (bone in )stuck it in a low oven and went and played in the mud trying to augment the garlic beds to make them a little dryer we lost all our early winter veg and the last of the summer crops to the rain very thankful for what I have canned or frozen

    Im binging you now I found you. This is great and really helpful. I have been wanting to start fortnightly shops and work my way up to a monthly. Its quite hard with iga, Coles and woolies just up the road. I do shop my specials and I have a large stockpile atm so I should just try it and as it's Easter holidays now I will be. Milk is my biggest problem...and freezer space. I need to inventory everything. Canning is a godsend for me. We have loved nearly everything I've canned. Cant wait to try some of your recipes when the website is up. Especially your breads!!

    So many fantastic gems of advice and knowledge in these two videos. I think growing my own veg is where it all began for me to learn to stretch and use every possible part of a plant that I just spent so long growing. Then I started to think about all our other foods that might be going to waste. I binned the fat off roasts for years and sometimes the juices, now I use every bit. A side effect of these choices is that things like paper towels are rarely needed . At the end of every week i challenge myself to make a "free" meal . I use random leftovers or veg that aren't used to make an upcycled meal that the old me might have thrown to animals but its all perfect food. It makes it a bit fun. So, so true about living too convenient to a shop when trying to budget by the month or two. I actually started collecting substitution lists for mostly foods and have quite an extensive list now. Thank you for sharing your wise and frugal ways lovely. Keep em coming 💜💜

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 года назад

      It's an ongoing process isn't it, something you can constantly add to and continue to work through, I think as the kids get older I'll be able to reduce even more some of the excess things that we purchase that we just don't 'need' but are still convenient to have in such a busy household!

There were no sales for apples when they were in season (I'm in US) but a local store had apples at a decent price (lowest I have seen in the past year) this week so I bought 3 bags so far and I have my first batch of apples in the slow cooker for apple butter. Do you have any tips on storing flour, I was keeping them just in the bags in a tub, when I went to check on them a few days ago, all the glue on the packet had come undone and they were all open. All of them I had about 6 2k white wings SR and 6 of the plain. I now have them in glass jars and I was wondering if that ok as generally I keep everything in their packets.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 года назад +1

      It’s always a good idea, if you have room, to put your flour in the freezer for 48 hours to kill off any potential bugs in it and then you can store it how you want. I suppose it depends on how quickly you go through it! We have food grade 35L barrels from bunnings that we store the bulk in and then glass jars from Kmart that decant into for everyday use, but we go through it fairly quickly, it gets rotated through fairly fast.
      You can vacuum seal or store in Mylar for longer term use but glass jars are fine if it works for you!

      I definitely could, and I do occasionally browse in my off weeks, and could get them delivered to my mums place. But I do find that a lot of the half price stuff is prepackaged/small stuff, and we don't buy a lot of that anymore! I keep an eye out for the big bags of basmati rice though :D

    Hi, great video! Do you find that making your own bread and dog food has helped decrease your food bill?

      I think that bread can be purchased cheap, but you have to have the accessibility and storage for it, which we don’t have! And I make it without any preservatives which is nice, but it’s not necessarily ‘cheaper’!
      We still buy dry dog food for the dogs as well but when we have our own dog food made up we can reduce the portions of the dry that they have, and the bones after making stock would otherwise go to waste (compost etc) so I feel like that provides a cost saving.

    Does anyone else putt a few dollars aside most weeks. For buying a lot of anything you use a lot of, when you see it for a really great price. Especially things with a long shelves live.

      I’m good at budgeting but not so great at not spending money put aside on other important things! I tend to find I spend my full budget each month by using any excess on stuff that is cheap that month and then going on in that way over the trips :). So it’s a similar concept but I just find the relevant thing on special each month to spend that little extra on :D

    90¢ a pound for apples is impossibly cheap compared to apples in Colorado 🫤 $1.79 USD a lb is on sale.
    Anchovies that's his choice, that's fine... 😂😂😂😂

      Heh, we do it in kg, so there is 2.2lb per kg so it is even more amazing! I try really hard to buy only seasonally (other than a few things, I buy bananas most of the time, so long as they aren't exhorbitant and pay a few dollars a kg for those) and just have a glut of whatever is absolutely cheapest!
