Fantastic game. The feeling of isolation, the big open spaces, the creepy ambience sounds, not knowing which lever does what - the early Tomb Raiders were superb!
The sense of isolation was something I really missed from Tomb Raider 2, which is the only other game in the series I've played. Had a lot to do with my lack of interest in the following sequels, actually!
Yes. simple and effective! no need for hundred of purchasable skills, item-crafting or Aquire XP by collecting herbs and scraps. just exploration , platforming, puzzles and some enemies !!
My uncle passed down his old PC to me for Christmas back in 2006. I was then that I found this gem installed. Never got far, as I wasn’t a gamer back then, but it was fun exploring! Took me months just to get out of the caves, but I had fun. Now I can see the entire game in its entirety. :)
Back when games expected you to explore the controls and environments. No tutorials, no way points, no maps. Just your wits, your reflexes, and your thirst for adventure.
We had a full instruction manual and Croft Manor as the training level. There were always training levels. What we didn't have which annoys me with modern games is the constant prompts throughout the entire game telling you which button to press. In those days we had to learn the buttons from the start and remember them. Also, i those days we had to press a control to get Lara to grab the edge when jumping or falling, none of this automatically grabbing the edge for us.
Let's be honest. They've come out with sequels and Rambo style reboots but the original will always be the best because it truly understood what made Tomb Raider a good game.
The use of music was fantastic. I remember some people complaining that it was used so sparingly. They just didn't understand that it would have totally lost its impact had it been playing all the time.
I really wish whoever holds the Lara Croft license these days would go back and play the early games to see what they offered in terms of puzzles and exploration. As the series has progressed over the years most of it has been lost and the games are a lot poorer for it.
The minimal sounds and ambience in this game gave me chills. The sound design in this game still holds up today. Like if you bought a voodoo card to play this lol.
I think this is the first game I ever played back then, that had 3D graphics. Such a revolutionary and addicting game. I remember sitting in school and hoping for it to be over soon, so I can go home and continue playing. Needless to say, my parents weren't happy about this. :P It was hard and frustrating at times, but I actually beat it. I'm still proud of myself. I miss this kind of slow paced exploration und puzzle solving games. Thanks for the sweet memories!
Outstanding atmosphere and fantastic level design. The golden age of gaming got so many things right, all decisions undertaken by nerds - no managers, no agenda that has to be pushed, no shady business practices. Despite running on simpler engines and with more technical constraints the games' remain timeless gems that draw you right in. They also respected the intelligence of the player and let you figure out stuff for yourself.
It does. I play it quite often with two friends on RUclips and Tomb Raider has had custom fan games made using the official TR4 engine since 2000 and they are still dishing out new ones to this day and honestly, I enjoy them more than the reboot games. There is still a giant community and everyone there is rather mature and creative with level creations and game discussions so a few new members would not hurt! Here, for those interested in the custom creations: www.trle.net/ Here are the Tomb Raider Forums: www.tombraiderforums.com/

Tomb Raider Anniversary is a modern update to this game if anyone is interested in getting into Tomb Raider but are turned away by the graphical limitations of the original.
i got Tomb Raider on release in 1996 and i was stuck for 2 whole months, at the Midas statue, i didn't know what to do (no help on the net back then ) ;) and i was extremely frustrated . One day i visited a friend and talked about the game and a statue of a person called midas, and he said "arh the guy where everything he touches turns to gold"! OMG!!! . 20 seconds later i was on my bike racing home, to get on with tomb raider again :) sweet memories. /michael
i remember getting this on the day it came out, i had a week off work and played it nonstop! when i finished it i think i nearly cried, i instantly put it straight back on and went through it again. did that a few times after too. :-)
This is one of my first games played on the PS1 ... I played it for days, I was annoyed because I couldn't find a solution ... but at the same time I loved it , and I couldn’t stop until I played to the end... I hope that one day he will make a remake of this game, before I grow old ... :)
I was born in 2004 and I have never heard of Rainbow Seige 6. I've played some of TRA and TR2, but mostly the original Tomb Raider. I've also played Fortnite, imo it's a fun game, especially with my siblings, but the early TR games are probably my favorite. There are many kids my age and younger that play classic games like this. A lot actually hate Fortnite because of the toxic 8 year olds that play it.
OMG 1:33:00 nostalgia hitting hard I pretty much breezed trough all the levels unttil I got at the point at 2:20:30 I remember I've been stuck there for a month or so. I think that was in 97/98 or something, haha.
Damn - this game still looks great! I remember the first time I played the Cistern level on the PS1, couldn't believe what was possible on a gaming machine. The controls needed a bit more refinement - but dare I say it offered more of a challenge than the current generation. One wrong move on the Francis Folly level (near the Thor, Damacles room etc) spelled disaster! The new Tomb Raider games have lost their sense of danger here and would be great to bring that back!
I feel like this game should just get remade. No level changes, no moving the environment, no HUD, just better graphics and controls. I know I would never be able to play a game like this, hell I can't even play a game on the easiest mode with easy guidance. But I know that this would be a great game.
My dad got this game for PC when I was like 9. I never played past the second level as a kid because the bear scared me too much. 😅 Finally played it a a few years ago
Hello World-of-Longplays. What a great channel! I'm planning on beginning my own retro gaming channel. I wan't to start by doing a 'Top 5' Tomb Raider levels for the original games. I have no screen capturing equipment and was wondering how possible it would be to use some of your footage from this game? I could, of course, happily link you in the finished video. No problem if not. Keep up the good work!
To be honest I'm surprised this isn't part of the Playstation One longplays...since, I think that's where most people would expect it. Great video nonetheless!
back when there was no remakes and remasters just pure inovation and creativity, no online but multiplayer sllit screen with friends at home, no DLCs only complete games! like it should be if stupdis gamers didnt pay for that

and most games today don't even have awesome soundtrakcs. The old games had soul that's for sure. Now it's just empty game. Making games and releasing patches or DLC to fuck more people in their wallet
Passed on this on the ps1 but got a feel for it with Duke Nukem Time To Kill like a year later..kinda copied this series some. I was playin Crash, Re1, Megaman 6 and Twisted Metal 2 around the time of release or a bit after.
Fantastic game. The feeling of isolation, the big open spaces, the creepy ambience sounds, not knowing which lever does what - the early Tomb Raiders were superb!
Diffidently innovative game of its time without Tomb Raider we wouldn't have games like the Uncharted series.
The sense of isolation was something I really missed from Tomb Raider 2, which is the only other game in the series I've played. Had a lot to do with my lack of interest in the following sequels, actually!
Yep grew up obsessed with these games. Classics are always best.
Yes. simple and effective! no need for hundred of purchasable skills, item-crafting or Aquire XP by collecting herbs and scraps. just exploration , platforming, puzzles and some enemies !!
Up to Tomb Rider IV, they were the best! After that the grphics might have improved, but the stories are shit.
This game will always be a timeless classic. The levels, the atmosphere, the music, the tone, everything was great.
I'm addicted to watching these long plays at work now.
Well the Croft Manor was the tutorial level. But you still had to try out the buttons and get used to it.
Inside and Limbo do that, theres no explication for nothing
Josh Fergusson No tutorial? What about Croft Manor?
We had a full instruction manual and Croft Manor as the training level. There were always training levels. Lara literally tells you how to play
Damn, that T-Rex jump scare still gets me 20+ years later
Ha-ha! Same here. I feel like I'm 19 again.
awww chicken chaser
That was no jumpscare. The T-Rex on the Super Nintendo Jurassic Park game gave a vastly better jumpscare than Tomb Raider's.
Let's be honest. They've come out with sequels and Rambo style reboots but the original will always be the best because it truly understood what made Tomb Raider a good game.
The music is so damn good.
The use of music was fantastic. I remember some people complaining that it was used so sparingly. They just didn't understand that it would have totally lost its impact had it been playing all the time.
Agreed.
@@JonasRosenven The cue is frightening because then you realised you're not alone and it really got you on edge.
Love this game!!! A hardcore classic and holds dear to my heart👌😎👌!
Indeed, Nothing can ever beat this classic
🙌 Yes 💯
Let’s hold hands
auto-aiming, best decision ever. if I had to aim manually at all those bats, it would have made the game maddening.
I really wish whoever holds the Lara Croft license these days would go back and play the early games to see what they offered in terms of puzzles and exploration. As the series has progressed over the years most of it has been lost and the games are a lot poorer for it.
Agreed. I don't think they made a better game.
This one and the 4th one revelation where the best 2 I say😉
I think it's more nostalgia value sometimes though. Having said that my favourites are tr2 and tr3.
What do you mean by Lara croft license?
@@GunRG He mean Eidos and now Square Enix - publishers of those games.
The minimal sounds and ambience in this game gave me chills. The sound design in this game still holds up today. Like if you bought a voodoo card to play this lol.

No.

Shotgun, level design, key hunting, late game enemy designs, projectile dodging, Atlantis visuals...
A lot more DOOM in here than I ever realised
This was the first Tomb Raider I recorded on my channel. The old games never get boring even nowadays. :)
I still have TR 1, 2 & 3, and still play them occasionally on my PS2 I still have. Still got a lot of playability even by today's standards
It does. I play it quite often with two friends on RUclips and Tomb Raider has had custom fan games made using the official TR4 engine since 2000 and they are still dishing out new ones to this day and honestly, I enjoy them more than the reboot games.

awesome, I'll check that out!, thank you!
I don't see why they bothered making all those sequels.
The music on this game used to freak me out when I was a wee kid. When ever I heard that fight music I'd get so scared. 😂
that is because you a little girl
Lara Croft never was about boobs.
Pure Indiana Jones adventure.

The rumor was started by the amarillist press and the stupid feminist and the feminazis, this last ones for jealousy of being a lot planes XD
Feminists in the 90s. In front of all when the series took of with the second title and Lara was shown in commercials and stuff.
Best game on PS1 back in the day
Crash is better.
Lemon Knight
OH GOD
there's ton of best ps1 game beside crash ok!! back when developer real put effort in all games good old days gone for good
I thought Resident Evil 1, Twisted Metal 2, and Final Fantasy 8/Tactics were better than Crash. But hey, to each their own.
I sometimes wish I was born a generation earlier so I could see this "back in my day" kind of stuff.
I hold this game dear to my heart. I know it from the back of my hand
I need to play this video game again with my RTX 2080 Ti and Intel Core i9 😂 😀 😬. I miss Tomb Raider 1. Brings back a lot of memories ❤.
the original and best tomb raider as far as i'm concerned :-)
Tomb Raider Anniversary is a modern update to this game if anyone is interested in getting into Tomb Raider but are turned away by the graphical limitations of the original.
Movie Nerd
The original was great for it's time, but it hasn't aged well.
Apparently the remake isn't that great.
I don't like the remake much. It doesn't capture the amazing atmosphere of the orignial. It feels more like a tribute than a remake.
@Mr nobody Returns I enjoy both of these games. Anniversary is definitely handholdy but the exploration and ambience is still there.
God. That opening music takes me back man.
I miss this game so much 💔
You can buy all the old TR games on Steam though. Got mine in a big anniversary package and I did not regret it. So much nostalgia :)
You can buy it via GOG.

Great classic game. I remember the N-Gage version, very good!!!
The music was tense and the ambient sounds so foreboding, at times it was like a horror game.

back then when games weren't speed running friendly.
What are you talking about? Super Mario 64 came the same exact year, 1996, as Tomb Raider, but SM64 is a speedrunning craze!

Weird, on the PS1 version, Pierre shows up at that point. I always think he ruins the moment, I'd prefer this version.
Wow, brings back memories of PS1 days
Just one question, why the 3dfx version and not the ATI version? There shouldn't be much issues with conversion if this is the steam release.

I played the Saturn version. The graphics were not as good as this. Still a stunning game and the incidental music was memorable.
