I haven't sold a single beat on my airbit account haha only sold one exclusive to a customer who stumble upon my beats on instagram my marketing and promotion is so bad
I am a rapper/producerfrom Norfolk, VA. I just got started selling my music online after doing music for 20 years! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHOWING ME HOW!!! You have been a huge inspiration for me to stop making excuses and getting my ish together! You showed me how much the game has changed from being discovered to just pushing myself! I cant thank you enough! Much love Curtiss King!!! You the MAN!
Agreed! It's all about that free flow traffic. 100% . If you have no money, do the exact opposite SAME THING per say. Free stuff! These tips are off the chain, mane. Thanks for the inspo. Even though it's Sunday I love hearing this stuff from people with other experience. Good luck on your journey in life.
I think if you don't have a lot of money the quality of your content becomes even more important. I read somewhere that advertising is the tax you pay for unremarkable content. Now I'm not saying that advertising and marketing is not necessary. Of course it is. But if you don't have money to spend promoting your shit you need to make sure it stands out. Make sure your content is good and come off the wall with it. Other than that, one good option for cheap promotion is your local open mic events. They are a hugely underrated platform for networking and building fans. I'm a hip hop artiste from the island of Trinidad and even down here this strategy is powerful.
A way to get your music out there when you have no following and no money is to submit it to RUclips music channels and submission sites. I did this, and got my track on a channel. My track has 10k views now over 2 weeks or so and I got some Sound cloud followers. I started with no following, so if anyone is starting out, work on your tracks, make it the best you can (songwriting and mix/master) and then send to a bunch. You will get your name out and build a following.
Yea currently making moves and establishing my whole I guesss you would say path way on my iPhone 6 and other music platforms. I enjoy anything I make even where I mess up. There’s always a start to everything and I believe “ it’s not how you start but how you finish!” I know this is months old but from a future producer I know you can be great even with a bucket and drum sticks.
I just say keep postin that shit. Because you never know but most important keep doing because you love too. Not just for the fame. We all want fans and engage with people but just gotta be real with what you do.
Myke Truth For me it was an two turntables mixing breaks. Then an Oberheim drum machine. then i graduated to an ASR 10. Got hired by Juvenile and he bought my first Korg Tritin, Proteus 2000 and MPC 3000. The rest is history brutha.
I've reached out to talented artists to help with graphics, videos, and photography. The deal is usually an old school way of working which is let's release a single and I can paid when the money comes in from sales. If it flops then the only one who lost was me. Artists need to take advantage of opportunities and stop with the "fake it till you make it" act. Learn to appreciate help instead of thinking everything you drop is going to make millions.
BOOM!! "no financial resources is no excuse. become more resourceful" Tony Robbins said that (basically) the ULTIMATE resource is RESOURCEFULNESS (and RUclips, and each other!) thanks for asking us to share!! Curtis, I add--PERSONAL conversations. IT ALL GOES DOWN IN THE DM as Gary Vaynerchuk says! as an artist I would like to know more about pro & cons of being independent vs signing a major label, can you do a video for it? been learning a lot from your videos
This is nothing, you should read his book if you haven't already. FILLED with what you called his broke stages and how he overcame. Most of these producers these days leave that part out of their journey. -Rah'Lee (Team Curtiss King)
Thank you for this resourceful video. I've just uploaded my first album to DistroKid (thanks to another of your helpful videos) so I'm waiting for it to be on. It's really nice to hear of someone else's beginnings and and how they got on on their musical journey. For now I do everything just on my phone and record my voice and instruments on my headphones' mic (very ghetto, I know 😃 but it works for now). Thanks again and hi from Czech Republic!
I definitely agree with everything you're saying! Ingenuity is a must and it helps you have a truly original sound. Necessity is the mother of invention and I am subscribing to you to pass on to my students!
I'm surprised I haven't subbed earlier to this channel. I have been producing since 06 but I lost love for music because I couldn't make it, but after watching your videos I ended up buying my gear again and found motivation again on trying to make a living out of the business I love. Thanks a lot for this type of videos
I'm thinking of starting to produce during my sophomore or senior year because I'll probably have a job by then and I'll have money to get some equipment.
When ppl are saying they are broke...what is the free way to do graphics. How did you get ppl to see your videos if they are lower end videos. Just things others might want to know.
WORD! I've been quite fortunate that over the past several years I've managed to cobble together a really great studio, one piece at a time, from paycheque to paycheque. I do a sort of neo-progressive rock thing, I play all the instruments myself, using Sony Acidpro, my digital drum kit cost only about £40. (UK), I use VSTs with a keyboard controller, the rest is the usual stuff, guitars, amps bass, etc. I'll spare you the rest. I paint my own album art, acrylic on canvas, I have a cheap video cam I do some vid with. Basically, music composition and performance has been a labour of love for me since the 1970s, and I love the millenium (aside from Trump) with all the affordable instruments and recording tools at my disposal. I have reached a point where I need to delegate the business side of things to an appropriately honest person, but I do what I can now through social media and things are moving along. ANYWAY, to get to the point, you can do it yourself and you'll probably get better results and not get ripped off by music biz charlatans. DON'T GIVE UP, DON'T MAKE EXCUSES. Schopenhauer said "The present state of a man's life is the result of every decision he's made." It's up to you, folks. Live your dream.
Curtiss King TV that intro is catchy af. You might wanna make that a beat and sell it... Also, your vibe and the info you provide is inspirational. Peace and Blessings
@ 7:38 ... "Not having money is not enough an excuse....When you lack resources to accomplish the things you want to accomplish then the next best thing for you ta do...is become more #resourceful ..." 🔥🔥🔥...🤘👤
So, I have a really bad laptop. I’m trying to be so resourceful with it. But recently I have not even been able to use it. I can’t work Ableton any more on it, and I’m trying to save up for a better laptop. Would that be an excuse? To the point where I can’t even use my computer. Keep in mind, I’m 14 and I’ve been applying to jobs waiting for a response man. But I play instruments, so that doesn’t stop me from doing that, but making music. It limits me so much
I'm learning about starting an SMB and first thing first think about your overhead cost which means how much you'll need to actually get the business running. Producing is a business unless you make beats and record as a hobby. And think about how you can cut your overhead cost. Everything else Curt already said. Be creative!!
Idk if somebody put it on here yet, but another good way could be to get a couple ig influencers to do a shout out within the music niche...some influencers have a good following and will charge next to nothing for one... Market your music as a product lol
Im more of a boom bap lofi classic hiphop kinda producer so i used a beat machine what i have found is that visualizer videos are ok but what people respond the most to are videos of you playing the beat live or making it from scratch. Like show you actually doing it rather than hittin play and keeping the camera on your daw screen
I'm in the position right now. Workin majority going to car note etc. bt i do manage to put money aside for studio sessions, and photo ops from my photography friends. I do alot from my phone like all the pics tht i take on my IG & Twitter @MikeGaliMusic - to the pics that I use for my own cover arts. I remember making my first "songs" by downloading instrumentals writing my own cover to em then recording it on my iPod tht i then mixed together on my iPod using Splice at the time then uploading it. so I've been using the resources around me for a min. but what I really want to do is book a session with u Curtiss. Its most definitely on my list. till then I jst wanna say preciate the knowledge that u drop n like always, ur Vids are right on time with the way my life is set up. But I do have 1 question to end this; How can an aspiring artist know if people real deal holyfield support him or just watchin to see him/her crash n burn? like if i suck why do people keep up with everything I do?? if i suck then why do they try to replicate my own creative style? it's like they c me n say thts dope bt i can do better... bt then don't
YoungGalahad3394 just keep focused on you bruh. You can definitely sort out the real from the fake. Like Curtiss said, have convos with these people that are interacting with you. If they fuck with you, you'll continue to see their support. As far as productive criticism goes, network and surround yourself with people who take what you do seriously. In other words, surround yourself with people headed in the same direction. I've played beats in front of people who just listen to music freely, and I knew myself that the beats were trash at the time, but they said it sounded good only because they were ignorant to what it was really supposed to sound like you feel me? Surrounding yourself with people headed in the same direction can tell if something's been mixed right, or if you need more layers on your vocals. Stay positive bruh, and keep grinding. Good luck to your success ✊
If I lease a beat and it says I can sell a certain amount of copies... am I able to use Distrokid to get it onto itunes, Spotify etc but tick them two boxes and nothing else so it wouldn't be like trying to copyright it just trying to get it up for sale?
Like... i would love to use FL 11 instead of ANY other version but i can't seem to find any 11's anymore. Anyone with the same preference? I just don't like the comicy look it got since 12. Plus, some things i learned over the last 10 years, all of a sudden, are not possible anymore. Or only by a different route. which sux.
Hey Curtiss,,, thanx for your Ideas Man... But... Can you put one of your songs on different distributors at the same time. Or, you only are allowed to upload it in One at a time...??? Thanx for your Help...!!!
how can l get more play list on media via radio coz here in Africa to sell a song its difficult how can l upcoming rapper promote my music when am block
YO CURTISS!! I just seen the most funniest thing ever on facebook! A rapper named Shaq G had a short video clip of xxxtentacion hanging a white boy. Shaq G had a youtube link and said "FULL VIDEO HERE" and it was click bait to his song LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO ppl in the comments were pissed but some actually liked it so I thought it was relevant to say on this video lol
Im a huge fan fam!!! Your videos are guiding me through..But Im an unknown rapper from Dallas TX that has no music out at all...whats your link because I need to purchase a leased beat for the first time??
Super cool video man, just what I was looking for... Currently I work with the demo version of FL and stock plugins and packs, and I'm really impressed of what I've done with this, already got some followers on SoundCloud man, anyway really nice speech!
Hello Mr. King. Like always I really enjoy your videos. They are very inspirational. I didn't have anything to start anything. I used my two blogs to advertise my music or any other projects that I was working on. I also use social media to add links to my projects. Free. I fill out my profiles with links to my projects, because I believe they are free business cards that you leave everywhere you post messages on. People can read your profile and your work is constantly exposed for free. I have traffic coming in constantly and I didn't have to bother anyone by telling them where to go to see my projects. Even this medium has a section where you can add links to your work when ever you create a video. Talking about a video my camera cost me $6.00 and I use it to create little videos when I can. I use what I can for free. You don't need a lot of a budget to do things. There are many free things online that you can do today. I call them opportunities. They are very important. Have a great day. Like always I look forward to your next video.
You are funny. I really enjoy watching this video. It was very very informative!!! And I can't wait to apply this to see results!! Thank you for sharing this! Im grateful 🙏💞
I love your channel Curtis...Producers: Do you want vocals from a singer like myself? I invested in a home studio...Can you kindly suggest how I can find producers who want my voice for their projects? Thank you! Love Gemma x
I am promoting an LP. I looked at your video about using Distro Kid to get on iTunes etc. One of the first blanks to fill in is the ARTIST NAME> The PL is recorded and ready to sell. The Artist and I are splitting the profits that we are both happy with. I am paying all the bills. When filling in the application on Distro Kid it asks for Artist name. We have aLP name and I have a promotion name. Will DIstro KIds send the money to Artist name? We need it sent to our LP website so we can split it correctly. Will putting in the Artist name in that import blank screw things up? What should I be concerned about to be able to get the cash sent to the right place so that me and the artist can split the money corrrectly?
Wi-Fi has probably been the biggest key to being a producer, might be a normal thing in the states but here in Africa, it's rare bro😂
HK BEATS it definitely puts our perspectives in check to hear the stories of others. Thank you for sharing yours

Budget. Dont buy what you dont need. Make sure to invest wisely.
That goes for time as well as money.
And a job = money. Get one.

A way to get your music out there when you have no following and no money is to submit it to RUclips music channels and submission sites. I did this, and got my track on a channel. I started with no following, so if anyone is starting out, work on your tracks, make it the best you can (songwriting and mix/master) and then send to a bunch. You will get your name out and build a following.
What are submission sites?
Please tell how me how you got that many views in 2weeks wit no following

YO CURTISS!! I just seen the most funniest thing ever on facebook! A rapper named Shaq G had a short video clip of xxxtentacion hanging a white boy. Shaq G had a youtube link and said "FULL VIDEO HERE" and it was click bait to his song LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO ppl in the comments were pissed but some actually liked it so I thought it was relevant to say on this video lol
Thanks bro, great video!
Dope!!
Im a huge fan fam!!! Your videos are guiding me through..But Im an unknown rapper from Dallas TX that has no music out at all...whats your link because I need to purchase a leased beat for the first time??
Like your videos man, very inspiring! Being independent is hard a, but when you do get the hang of it no one can stop you. Survival Instincts.
Ok, this is pure inspiration.
That's awesome and everything for internet stuff, but as far as local, how do I get people to pay me money for beats instead of weed?
Show me how to promote my songs on the net. Don't just tell me I have to do it, I already know that! I need you to demonstrate what to do to me.
Super cool video man, just what I was looking for... Currently I work with the demo version of FL and stock plugins and packs, and I'm really impressed of what I've done with this, already got some followers on SoundCloud man, anyway really nice speech!

K.V.N's Mind thank you so much family. I really appreciate you watching
Hello Mr.
2018 im jus now gettin hip to bro
I am promoting an LP. I looked at your video about using Distro Kid to get on iTunes etc. One of the first blanks to fill in is the ARTIST NAME> The PL is recorded and ready to sell. The Artist and I are splitting the profits that we are both happy with. I am paying all the bills. When filling in the application on Distro Kid it asks for Artist name. We have aLP name and I have a promotion name. Will DIstro KIds send the money to Artist name? We need it sent to our LP website so we can split it correctly. Will putting in the Artist name in that import blank screw things up? What should I be concerned about to be able to get the cash sent to the right place so that me and the artist can split the money corrrectly?
my man looks like DJ KHALED... another one!!
😂😂
