I bought a helmet that day.And one month later my board contacted my helmet and split it the same way. Helmets people when the surf is real. Or not..
As a surfer who appreciates what these hellmen do I'm very happy Kai was wearing that helmet. We do not need to lose any more of these warriors. Heal up charger.

Shows that the waves do not have to be that big to get hurt. When there is a reef and it is hollow hydrodynamic forces can bring surprises. Congrats to Tom Carroll who helped in bringing the use of these melon protectors.
Surfing is the best way to get beat up. Usually you just get drilled. Sometimes it knocks you down. I've had some strange accidents that led to my staying out of the water. The weirdest thing I've heard of was a top guy that just ran into a box jelly that nearly killed him. He was traumatized. I think it happened on Kauai too. Anything can happen. Gotta be playing the odds when you cheat death so often. I hope Kai lives long time. He's all time great.
Smaller waves are actually more dangerous there; less water moving over rhe reef, very shallow. The foamball sent him straight to the bottom to get mangled there.
The other missing link for concussion protection is a well fitting Mouthguard. When yur lower jaws slams into your upper jaw it shakes your brain and it's lights out. Think of a Boxing Upper Cut. Hopefully helmets and mouthguards will become standard equipment
Oh, I hope he got PAID for that one. That's a real big advertisement. Red Bull saved his life! What's his current state - is he known to be okay at this point? Put that poster up (the pic with him holding the cracked helment in the hospital) at any surf shop that has reef / rock breaks nearby (even coquina), and you'll increase helmet sales 100% easy

Watched this live and was so frustrated by the commentary. The commentators completely missed what happened. He was clearly pointing to his head and then his helmet. But they said he was coming out because of new rules not allowing people to surf in SUP and shortboard. Kai later said the helmet saved his life. First time he wore a helmet at Pipe.
Yeah, those commentators talk too much and they don’t pay attention a lot of times. I also hate it when they’re cutting each other off when speaking, and interrupting each other, which makes it very annoying for the viewers and listeners.
those paddles are hella light. And it's not even broken. I doubt if you could swing that paddle hard enough to break the helmet at all. Maybe with a perfect blade hit? But it would definitely break the paddle.
@@Bebtelovimab Yeah, his sup is the same length and might weigh a bit more than a standard mini gun. Probably a 7' 8" or so and ridiculously low-volume for a sup. It's only 24 or 25 wide, and 95% of the people who ride sups couldn't stand up on it for more than a couple seconds. About like getting clocked by a longboard or a 9' 0" Waimea gun. My bet's the reef, but either is possible.
This is the first time in my life I’ve seen Paddle surfers or SUP surf pipe. as you might see, it was the Paddle that got in the way and caused him to fall got hung up in the wave. It takes a lot of skill and bravery to paddle Surf into pipeline. But good thing he had a helmet on.

Do we know this for sure. Has Kai talked about what happened? It almost looks like the helmet was torn off from the wave.

I had a head injury in waist-high waves. Fin to the face. Almost ended me.

Kai can manage his board himself. Thats why he's still holding it. He's standing just fine not even a wobble.
That's what happens to cheap helmets. Does take much to crack them.
Think about twice to say helmets are ugly if it's on bike or on surfboards the helmet could have been Kai's head.
