He has compact swings but I bet his racket head speed is pretty fast. You don't need a big backswing if you use body rotation to power the swing. Even Federer at times uses an extremely compact backswing and generates huge pace.
Hi Felix. I play with synthetic gut with most of my rackets strung between 19lbs and 25lbs. It was a gradual transition from 55lbs over the years. Defence and depth are easy. It helps me with top spin and heavy slice. I would not suggest it for flat hitters but if you hit with some top it makes the game a lot easier. As you say, it takes much less effort. I play with control oriented rackets whereas Adriano plays with a powerful racket, so maybe harder to control with his racket. I encourage most of my friends to drop their tension a bit.

I am struggling with elbow and wrist issues. I had been reduce my string tension from 60 to 50 to 40 and 34lbs. I was surprised that I got decent control now. In the old day (10-15 years ago), I had hard time to keep the ball in when I reduced the tension from 60 to 55. I guess you will learn to adjust when you have no choice. I have been focusing on spinning the ball and shorten my swing and it seems working OK and I can still play with all the injuries. From this video inspiration, I will try 19lbs when re-string my racket today.
Earlier in the year I switched from 54lbs 16L poly down to 48lbs 17g and that already felt like a huge adjustment, one that brought instant relief to a bout of tennis elbow. I might try going lower just for fun, but I initially struggled quite a bit to control the extra power at 48/17, so not sure how feasible it would be for me to lower the tension even more without having to also make some technical adjustments to reign in the power (which I don’t really want to do).
Good video. I haven't ever used poly below 44lbs and probably will not go lower. It is worth mentioning the Mannarino uses all poly strings. If you use gut strings, nylon strings or a hybrid of poly with gut or nylon, you will likely lose too much control if you go too low in tension. Poly strings are basically a hard piece of plastic and they play with decent control even at low tensions. Gut and nylon are much softer and resilient and play better at higher tensions.
Kevlar. You could probably tie by hand and play with it. it has no bounce its completely dead. But foe some reason I find it easier on my arm than poly.

That caused a lack of strength and so he had to adapt and found that solution. It might be useful to learn how to play with such tension if you're slightly injured or if you lack energy on one day or another.
People play with different setups for different reasons. Depending on your playing style you choose what tension you feel most consistent way playing over a longer period of time. I play with 46,43 main cross with a 1.15 thin polyester string. That i like the best

Go below 50 lbs. Somewhere between 40 and 50 depending on the size of the head. The strings will last longer, there won't be as much tension loss, you'll have more power while still maintaining control and it's easier on the arm.
I play 48/46 hybrid for comfort and more power assist. But for young guys you want to tune your tension so you can take a full athletic swing and the ball still goes in. By doing this you will get the most control which is important for minimising unforced errors. Kokkinakis is very strong and has one of the highest tensions on tour.

I always remember the polar opposite of this. Pete Sampras strung his racquet at around 65 pounds give or take and had a dampener and the old school Pro Staff Classic for most of his career. he just grew with the racquet I think. I still kept my 92 eras? Pro Staff classic 6.1. To this day people I play with I will hand it to but they will comment it is heavy but hits like a dream club of a racquet. I have some newer Wilson racquets but admit that is usually my brand style of choice is the Pro Staff series.
You know, i worked with the wilson stringing team at the US open for four years, and the lowest tension i ever saw there wasn’t actually mannarino (although he was going low 20s at that point), it was Daniel Nestor playing doubles. Was stringing 11 lbs 😂

I've used my ezone 100 300gr with 20 lbs for six months. It's cool, really filling the ball on strings. But I also using 50 lbs on my 2º raquect, now I'am adapted to bofh raquects, depending to the oponent or ball.
Quite a few pros are going lower with their tension (according to a Tennisnerd video from a couple of years ago, the top 500 ATP average about 44lbs). Maybe it's partly due to the unresponsive balls that are being used these days, or to the fact that strings have improved and so you can still get control at lower tension. It could be worth experimenting with trying out not just 50lbs, but 45lbs, or even lower, too. If the effect on control is not that great, then why not take the extra power and make it easier on the body?
Main takeaway is that worries about loss of tension are totally overblown. If you drop from 44 to 36, there's nothing to worry about (especially since most of the drop happens early, so the tension you like and are used to is actually lower than 44)

I would recommend to try and adjust your swing a bit to spin the ball more. This way you can see if you get to make your ball heavier while not losing speed
Low tension with fresh string should still give you responsiveness. End of the day is up to your skills and technique. If you have an explosive stroke, then low tension totally offsets your advantage, if you have slow but long strokes IE old people, it actually can do some quite good punching shot.
Honestly with how aggressive of a player you are I am slightly surprised that you don’t play with a slightly lower tension I think it could honestly be really beneficial
It's a common trick these days. If you play mediocrely but want to look badass, just lower the tension, and you will become one of those slappers who looked like good players

I cannot go lower than 50 lbs (22-23 kg), because generating spin is so much harder with such a low tension which makes it even less controllable for me. I currently play with a six-sided topspin/control string on a Prestige Pro, which is already a low power racket, with a string tension of 24 kg for the long strings and 23 kg for the short strings. I do have a long backswing on my forehand and also on my one-handed backhand, so generating racket head speed has never been an issue for me. The length of Mannarino's backswing is basically a quarter of mine. Both has advantages and disadvantages. In the end string tension is really a matter of personal taste. I had big problems with controlling the power, which is why I use such a low power setup for more than 10 years now. On my old Wilson Blade I actually played with 60 lbs, which was definitely too much. For me 50-53 feels perfect. The strings are also a big factor. I tested very hard and unflexible poly strings that felt like I was hitting rocks. My currently string is quite soft and flexible for a poly string. It loses its tension easier, but during the clay season I usually break the strings fast enough that it's not a problem. Mannarino probably uses poly string, right? (Synthetic) gut is a completely different story. Those need to be strung with much higher tension.
@ 😂😂😂. Greatest players ever all used 1HBH except for a few. The 1HBH is not used because it takes too much natural and athletic ability to master hence why the 2HBH is used now. 100% of the females use the 2HBH because it’s easy for them to adapt to.

I played tennis for about 35 years before giving it up in around 2016. The last 5 or 6 years that I played, I ALWAYS strung at 10 lbs.

Yes even at mid 40s, you’ll see the string move a bit. Was a bit concerned how that affects the shots but seems ok
I started playing with 45 lbs about 2 years ago and it's so much nicer than higher tensions. 50 lbs feels like a board now.

players are very fast around the court now, lots of pure athletes. Seems to make sense to be able to eke out a bit more power on strokes

Mannarino has very little rotation on his shotmaking which when you have a racquet at 19lbs means presumably less errors. Seems to work ok for him.

if youre breaking strings, its too tight, try reducing your hit speed, you will save yourself from injury also

I'd NEVER be able to control the ball at that tension. I prefer 32kg. You can then pound the hell out of the ball and it won't land in the next city.
