saucers for plants
wooden containers

As a fellow junker, this is one of my favorite videos you've ever done. I look for pretty much the same stuff and consider my finds as treasures!
I'm a thrift shopper too! I love purchasing large glass and brass chandeliers and removing all the wiring so they can be used as lanterns. I also use the brass part that holds the light bulbs (turned upside down) as wind spinners. Upright floor lamps look fantastic with succulents planted in them. I always find treasures that can be repurposed for use in the garden. ~Margie
Love reuse, recycle and reloved!
I found that going to the thrift store during the week instead of weekends is better. Enjoyed the video. 😀
Good tip
I love reuse products, good Linda for for thinking steward of earth, we have to be very intentional on this.
I love that you are so down to earth . You would be surprised how many people would never say they go into a Good Will . I love going and finding one of a kind items like that blue bowl you got 💙 Welcome back Stewart 🙏
I used to never go to second hand stores until one day I went with a friend and found so many great things and now I go to several on a regular basis. Also have donates a lot to all of them especially Restore.
My teenagers love going to the second hand stores. They call it "going thrifting". I like donating to them, too, including to Restore. But I'm surprised to see everything in Restore is so expensive! Their appliances are almost the same price as new ones. They need to price their items better in order to move their inventory. Way too much stuff in there and very dusty! I always feel like I can't breathe when I'm in there.
Finally someone with some taste that does "junking", so tired of all the bad 60's & 70's colored glass I see people raving over on here LOL Lived through those eras don't want any of that stuff!
How do you guys handle the smell of thrift shops?
Ruby Arias Just don't let yourself think about it. Lol. I just can't handle being in Restore for a long time since I can smell all the dust!
I inherited a whole set of coasters one year .. compliments of a magpie. He also brought me coins, clothespins and sparkly doodads .. all of which I put to good use. 💞
The magpies brought you gifts? That is awesome!
Goodness, those darling magpies! Love this comment!
@@jellenp 💞
@@LindaCasey, I once tied a magpie gift (a sparkly rhinestone, single, clip-on earring) to the bow on a bottle of wine that I gave a fellow thrifter as a hostess gift. Another dinner guest turned to me and asked incredulously, “Why’d you put that on there?” The hostess and I just winked at each other and I replied, “Because it sparkles!”
This is so affirming... I LOVE to find old things that have their own history and then I give them a new history and purpose. Thank you so much for this video and inspiring me to look at things I might run across for new purposes in my garden and home.
Yes.. I love thrifting. And always go with an opened mind.
I really enjoyed this!
I giggled all the way through thinking of my Mother...
I'm in my 50's now but for many years I've been doing many of the things you mentioned!
My Mother taught me similar hints when I was growing up. 💕
One other thing I always search for...new or old...is anything with feet; like your little silver bowl. I think "feet" make things look extra special and much more elegant!
Take care everyone! 😷😉👍🏻🌷
Love this! Aside from plants, goodwill makeovers are my faaaave! My very best thrifted planter is a $10 cheap birdcage. It was white with a plastic bottom, probably from Petsmart originally - I gave it a very low key paint job by wiping on black chalk paint with a rag and then wiping a thin layer of cheap antique gold acrylic paint over that to give it that patina look. I placed a large plastic salad bowl in the bottom, also painted black with drainage holes drilled in, obscured the outside of the bowl with some preserved moss, and planted it up with variegated English ivy and asparagus fern. It’s been hanging in a shady nook by my front patio for 2 years. It probably cost me 20 bucks total but it’s so unique and pretty and low maintenance, it always makes me smile. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration to give it a sidekick! 😋🌱
You clever girl!
Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people because an upsetting event occurs in their lives taking them by surprise, unexpectedly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. In nature, the biological conflict linked with a territorial fear (just what it means-a fear in your territory, your home, your community, etc.) is a widening of the bronchia (tissue loss). Your body attempts to widen your bronchia in order to allow more air into your lungs to give you more strength and energy to fight to keep your territory safe. Stay with me.......The biological conflict linked with a death fright impacts the lungs. The lungs attempt to grow larger in order to allow more air in because breath equals life, as we all know. No breath equals death.
While you are in the fear or death fright conflict, you notice no symptoms of “disease”, except you have cold hands, cold feet, you can’t sleep, you awaken at 3 AM every night, you have little appetite. During the war, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. During this decomposing of the extra tissue (tumor), the body expels a lot of protein, and without replenishment, severe protein loss can result in death. Antibiotics did not exist yet. If TB bacteria does not exist in a person or they have been vaccinated against TB (big mistake), then the tumor will simply encapsulate and become dormant and not harm you. Who died during the Spanish Flu? Mainly the poor who could not afford to buy meat and proper nourishment, and the people who were directly impacted by the bombings and destruction of their homes.
Millions of people suffered fear and death frights during the fighting of WWI, and millions of people all went into healing at the end of it. Not everyone was affected because not everyone suffered the same way.
It’s not a “flu”, it’s not something you “catch”. It’s biological, meaningful, and unavoidable. One hundred years later, a Fear Campaign begins, using the media to spread it......
I appreciate the reminder to wear a mask. Good on You!
Wonderful ideas! Linda is so fun to watch, I love the blue and white porcelain!
I buy so much metal and cast iron & wrought iron, etc. that I am convinced I was probably a blacksmith in a past life. Thank you for enabling me!
Yes! A favorite material to hunt for!
Julia, I now go to the scrap metal junk yard! They let me in and I find old lamp parts, copper pots, wrought iron pieces. I pay by the kilo (I am in Italy) My garage is pilling more and more. treasures Try to see if you can find one near you.
😄🤭
Me too I love it !
if you come to Colorado very often you will have noticed that Salvation Army Thrift Stores have shut down. The ARC Thrift Stores are popping up all over the place though. I prefer them over all other thrift stores. The first store I went to more then 40 years ago is still in the same location. I will stop there if I happen to be in the Lakewood area.
Beautiful job love refurbishing
I love second hand stores and yard sales. I saw a painted wood armchair in a home decor magazine and months later I found one at Salvation Army for $25.00. I needed to replace my sofa and love seat and found the exact replica, in much newer condition, at Salvation Army for $165.00. My entire collection of Corning cornflower bake-ware is from second hand stores, as are three sets of dinnerware (one fancy set with serving pieces and two every-day sets). My garden has a red metal rooster 18" tall, and a 36" metal sun made of stainless steel and copper, both second hand. The sun was $30.00 at a yard sale. When I want to relax, I go to second hand shopping.
Me too!
Awesome!!! Bring more of these programs!!😀
I love thrifting! I love your earrings. So glad you reminded us to wear a mask, brought us back to reality.
Even after all this time we still need reminders don’t we?
I also LOVE second hand stores. It’s a great way to reduce waste. So many cool things for a few dollars.
That divided Detroit box would be perfect to hold cutlery on a buffet! I look for the same things when thrifting and antiquing, but also covered glass refrigerator dishes, serving spoons, pickle forks, and old drapes I can cut up for sewing projects. Another amazing adventure is old hardware stores and farm co-ops, the ones that still have shelves of little cardboard boxes filled with teeny mystery gadgets! I can’t freaking wait to be able to get out again...
You are speaking my language!
It’s absolutely refreshing to see your process and how you go about finding treasures. In today’s world of newer is better, this perspective of shopping previously loved is a welcome change. Thank you for the ideas and showing how you beautify things!
Thank you 🙂
For a fabulous 50th birthday party, I when to Goodwill and second hands for my table decorating. I used black sheets for table cloth and colorfully curtains for table runner. I bought old silver trays, bowls, roaster. I sprayed the silverware black and lined with a black dollar store table clothes or clear glass bowls. I fought at estate sale old buttons, thread stools, and glass flower napkin holder, for dish labels holders. I spent under 30 dollars to make four food tables look classy and sassy like the birthday girl.
You go girl!!
We are “birds of a feather”! It’s always that one of a kind thing that calls my attention and then the creativity of how to use it. Beautiful back yard!
I too love all the items and ideas you mentioned for my garden. I also sew, so I put thread, small scissors, etc. in those smaller bowls so carry to a chair where I might want to sit and sew. Thanks
Lovely Lady Linda, thank you for adding such an elegant presence among all my favorite gardening channels.
Thank you Paula!
Thankyou Linda for more of your creative ideas.I must certainly start hunting through the secondhand shops again I love repurposing and giving things a second chance.Sometimes their new use is not what the item was initially intended for,but thats where ones own creativity comes in,Keep well and happy
You are so right! It triggers ideas one would never have without them!
I always look for pretty plates/platters/bowls to use at our church's twice a year bake sale.
A Bundt cake on a pretty plate sells faster - and for more money - than one on a piece of cardboard covered with tinfoil.
(Unfortunately, they frequently find their way back to me and then I have to store it...again.)
The best use of a secondhand find!
Yep! Even when you say, "The plate is part of the gift!"
🍰🥧🧁🍪🍰🍶
Put a note on the bottom of the plate to ‘keep and enjoy, or pass along’.
@@Listenanddecidepc I was going to say! To label the bottom! My church its an unwritten rule... you put your name on the bottom if you want it back... otherwise its to "keep" or it stays with the church kitchen...
I love your idea of giving the bowls as gifts with things in them.
I’ve done it frequently :-)
Yes! That's such a great idea!
My mom was famous for gifting a pretty wicker basket filled with household items to newlyweds, often tied up in a set of new sheets. 🙂 Also kept a stash of mismatched china for sharing baked goods at bridal and baby showers, leaving the platters and bowls for the bride/mom. It’s a lovely extra!
@@eurekamarijka This reminded me of my dear mother who died this past Memorial Day at 91. She was a Top Seller for Fuller Brush Company in the 60-70’s and for Christmas, would make up MANY gifts for her customers. A shiny new copper metal dustpan filled with small kitchen essentials and some cookies...all wrapped in clear plastic.and a big bow. We would drive around, station wagon full, 🍥delivering them for hours. How she found the time...with 7 children. Such happy times. 🧹
@@marymarysmarket3508 Those are great memories - your Mom sounds very thoughtful & considerate. Bless her heart & her spirit which I'm sure lives on in you. Thnx for sharing!
I really enjoyed this share. I too have always loved the meandering time spent in a thrift store. Because I've been doing it for years I hit specific spots and I can be out in a jiffy. I'm also known to visit these stores when visiting another city. Good to hear you are back Stuart! Thanks for the fun ideas.💞
How smart you are!
Every goodwill store smells terrible to me. That same odor is not in thrift stores.
They know me at the Goodwill and the Goodwill is my therapy. Gardening is therapy also and when I look out my windows or just take a walk checking on my gardening it amazes me how 30 years ago I killed so many plants. My plants are beautiful now but i am still learning after 30 years.😀 Happy gardening!!
Fantastic sunshine. Love your garden.
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for all the great ideas.
I think I’m addicting to watching your videos! So many good ideas 💡
I’m glad!😂
Thank you for helping people to see happiness and beauty and normalcy! Love your channel!!
that metal stand held an amphora, it came in small medium and large, we sold them at Pier ONE Imports, originally priced around 45.00 $.
You are beautiful and a cool lady....Love you call Second hand stores....Second hand stores....That is what we call them here in the Chicago area....As my friend states....”Let someone else pay the full price first”....And....An excellent point....re-purposing....Great Video! Valerie Craft Kitover
I absolutely LOVE the way you elevate your plant pots! Thank you for the inspiration! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Miss Linda - just did my own Thrift Shop adventure but never thought of saucers, coasters and/or candle sticks, etc...love it. Thank you. I also find it inspiring to go to antique shops...even though I don't always buy something, but come away with IDEAS! Thank you for this video. Love it.
Very affordable and creative.! Thanks .
Great and informative video. A regular trip to the thrift store is a must. Some days you go home empty handed and other days you take home a treasure or treasures. I love all the tips shared on what to look for and how to find function in the items.
Great ideas. You are a true entertainer.
I also love finding baskets that I can use for different projects around my home from a secondhand store because they’re usually very reasonable. We have to find whatever we can to keep our DIY projects reasonable and you found some beautiful things and made some beautiful displays out of it
👍👍so many good ideas. Your yard is fabulous
My daughter frequent these shops also. After watching this video we went shopping and found some great treasures.
I’m so glad!
So much for giving me some great tips and ideas on how to decorate my yard and my patio area making it look a little nicer and more glamorous and I loved how you planned it these containers up with all these beautiful plant I do a lot of miniature garden never thought about planting some of these plants in there they look perfect fairy gardens thank you so much for giving me so much great tips and inside how to decorate outside on a budget
I love your backyard garden. So glad to find you. Goodwill is our happy place.
I’ve started picking up punch bowls to use as a plant cloche in the garden.
Thank God bc they do pile up GREAT IDEA
You do everything I do. Been a thrifter most my life. I have issues paying store prices for almost everything except my plants. I do buy a lot of discount plants as well. However I don’t always tell ppl about the things I get bc I’m selfish.
I don't like paying full for plants either...lol
I wait until it gets 90 degree and go to work at Lowe's for plants that are marked down. All my plant were bought at 50 or 75 percent off. Because I can't afford the regular price. When I don't know where to put them I just put them in a larger pot and tuck them in a shady spot so they can heal. The only plants I have paid full price for is the snow ball brush and steel hollies and they were a gift to myself. I pay myself also for doing all my gardening work alone. Happy gardening ☺️
We have a great Hospice thrift store. The key to finding great things is frequency in visits. You need to be there at the right time to snap treasures up before other thrift store lovers get there. :) Loved all the inspiration.
You are so so right!
Thank you for showing *HOW GREAT* used and thrift items are! I have been a thrift shopper for decades! And many feel there is never a use for what others have discarded - but you have helped show that is not true....These items are even _more special_ because you cannot find them in a regular store! (And certainly not for such a low price!)
Yes, I love goodwill for my creative, beautiful garden! My neighbors love both my front and backyard
Thanks Linda. This was one of my favorite videos to date.
How kind!
The joy of thrifting is like no other! 👏🏽🥳
The first thing I head for is what is probably the basket section..always. Then unique lamps..lighting.Then the colored glass..bottles..vases...any kind of glass art.
Loved this! Thank you, it’s great to find my habits validated by such an elegant lady!
Hi Linda I just love all your finds...you are so darling. Love your videos!
I really enjoyed this! My sister and I have also found some beautiful old green glass vases that are great for flowers from the garden. I also use baskets on the front porch and fill them with pine cones, berries and branches during the winter here in Wisconsin.
Charming!
Hi from England. The idea of the metal outsde pot hiolder is great. We have a Candle Hiolder with 5 candles on , we have had it for years. I think we will use ours for Pot holders x you seem such a wonderful giving person, you sound like myself x . We have a very large family. X
How many do you have in your family? I have nine siblings!
@@LindaVater 4 Grown ups and 16 Grandkids x
Great minds think alike, I've planted in repurposed things forever. My 3 Phaleonopsis orchids have never been happier than in a $.37 picnic silverware basket from Dollar General at end of season. I hang it by the handles & it looks stunning. Going on 3 years now, think I got my money's worth. Currently eyeing the metal frame from a tractor seat, lots of holes, will make a cute succulent "planter". Wine boxes work great too!
I'm a lantern freak. I have found some terrific items over the years at good will. If it gets broken , no worries. My motto is recycle and reuse. We live in such a throw away world it disturbs me greatly. Love your ideas.
Silver trays! I have so many saved from a friend moving out of state, just taking up precious storage in my small home. I will now take them out and use them to hold my potted plants! Just one idea I got from you today! Thank you.
I have almost the same things. I gave up on our Goodwill many years ago but found a couple of other thrift stores that I love for finding these things. I don't worry as much about using it in the yard when it's been thrifted. I love the creativity of using thrifted items.
Awe Linda, I absolutely love everything you said and shared with us. You have such brilliant ideas and I am using a lot of your tips on the baskets, pots, and candle holders. I love what you said about the saucers and bowls, just brilliant, thank you again!👏
Thank you Linda! I have some terracotta pots and candle holders that I thought about donating! You changed my mind and inspired me. 😍
I love ❤️ all of your ideas on what to look for in the thrift store!! You’re the best!!😃 Thank you, Linda !!
Thank you, Linda. I love thrifting and you have some very good treasures.
The Goddard Tool Company was founded in 1916 in Chicago by Paul B. Goddard, formerly of the Illinois Tool Works. In July of 1917, a branch of the company was founded in Detroit, making milling cutters and machine tools for automobile companies including Packard, Studebaker, Maxwell, Lincoln, and Marmon. Goddard moved to a new factory on the corner of Hastings and Forrest in 1919, but by the 1920's had already outgrown the two-story building
I love these details!!!
Love your videos and thank you.My tee's, jeans, dress clothes, home decor such as botanical pictures comes from the Goodwill. I love old furniture. I fell I love with old furniture because 30 years ago I didn't want to pay interest charges on furniture. I still love every old piece of furniture I have. I love gardening and because of you I'm making topiaries. Thank you. Also what a beautiful back yard you have. It is absolutely amazing 😊
I'm a huge fan of shallow coasters as plant saucers. I also use a lot of those chunky candle sticks to elevate plants on shelves. And my favorite idea is if it's a color you don't like or it doesn't fit with your decor, spray paint is a miracle!
Good Afternoon Linda !!! I Loved this video. I Love, Love, Love thrift store's. I find a lot of really neat things in them. I Love your idea with the bowl as giving it as a gift with something in it . I look for plates so when someone is sick I make them a cake and put it on one of those plates. I also put a sign on it that tells them I don't want it back but you can pass it on to someone else who is not feeling good with a cake on it . Oh my am I a basket collector. Thank you for sharing this helpful video with us. So until next time God Bless you and your family and have a Blessed Evening and Stay Safe my dear Friend.
What a giving heart you have!

Great haul, you are very creative with reusing items.
I do not go to town that I don't go to a Thrift, Second-Hand, Consignment or Bargain Shop. I would say I am slightly obsessed.
,?
Same! It’s always worked into every trip. Antiques as well, just to look.
I thoroughly enjoy programs like this...If you are creative, there
jewels are in the " rust."
Welcome back Stuart! I love thrift shopping for house and garden too! Also, yard sales and rummage sales. You've given me some new ideas. Thanks, Linda.
Exactly!
Oh my you have helped me so much...... just to understand or justify me buying urns, pots, metal stands, cast iron,! Now I’m going to go for baskets! 🤣🤣🤣🤣❣️
In England we call them charity shops and they are not open right now because of lockdown but I look forward to them reopening in the future. I love your suggestion of using items for gifting which I had not thought of before.

Resist the temptation to pick up junk !!!!
I have a large plastic container taking up space in my garage of my grandmothers old silver plated serving ware... We haven't had the heart to get rid of it and every time I see that container I think we really need to do something with that... Thank you Linda!
