    I bought same planer during Covid. About $1000 more. Replaced a DeWalt 734. This is one amazing planer!
    I too had the rust problem. Woodcraft has a cover that solved the problem immediately. They come in different sizes to accommodate the tool. I have one on my planer, jointer, and pocket hole station.

    Great video! I just ordered a Grizzly 20" 5HP Helical planer. I've had a DeWalt Benchtop planer for 15 years or so and hate it, especially since I'm working almost exclusively with hardwoods that I have harvested and milled myself.

    You are right, that is a good upgrade from the Dewalt plainer and it is nice for sure but, if you really want to get on of the best planers on the market, look into a Felder AD951. That has 10 HP, all digital powered height adjustments accurate to a couple thousandths, 20" wide cut, and it is also a 20" jointer. So it's 2 tools in one. I upgraded from that Dewalt to the Felder and absolutely no comparison. So quiet and so powerful, the only down side would be the price, it will set you back a bunch of money. Good video for someone looking to improve their game.

      Yeah I don’t think my budget allowed for that Felder. Sweet machine though!

    Nice video. I have had the DW735 for fifteen years and just bought an aftermarket helical head. I've been wondering whether a full-size planer would be a worthwhile upgrade. I have a "real" jointer (Laguna JX|8) but it wasn't an upgrade. I've decided, since buying the '735, that I'd go big or go home.
    You mentioned table saws as all doing "table saw things". I just wanted to point out that there is also big difference between a portable job-site saw and a cabinet saw. The first stationary tool in the shop has to be the table saw. After that, it's arguable.
    Thanks for the video. I really don't have another stationary tool that I "need" but I'll think about a real planer again.

      You won’t regret it. I have a Laguna F2 table saw, and I used to have a Dewalt jobsite saw. There’s a difference, but not nearly what I got with this planer upgrade.

    I have the Dewalt Planer with factory blades and the Byrd Shelix head in them. I’d love to have room for a larger planer like the Grizzly that you have, but I don’t. I’ve never planed much soft wood with either version of the Dewalt. I’ve never had an issue taking 1/32 or more out of hardwood. I typically work with exotics such as Brazilian Cherry, Peruvian Walnut and all the domestic varieties you can imagine. I’ve never found it underpowered (for what it is). Any chance you had a lemon or other issues? I’m super happy for you and the new rig, but don’t want others who can’t afford or like me are completely out of room to think there is anything wrong with the 735. I will say the Byrd Shelix head cuts night and day better than the stock blades.

      If you’re happy, stay happy. Sounds like your upgrade on the head is a good upgrade. My planer worked fine, not a lemon, but is no comparison to the Grizzly.

      Just got the 735x.. is the Byrd the best/only way to go for the upgrade? I see a few other options in the $300 range or so, vs the $450 or so for Byrd. Just curious if they are all the same blade or if the cheaper options might be like China versions and no good or what? I'd like to consider buying that blade down the road.

  • @b3owu1f
    @b3owu1f 4 месяца назад +1

    I just got the Dewalt 735x. I am curious if the helical upgrade (about $350 for the blade) will make it run quieter as well or if it is purely the motor that is super loud on the Dewalt. I am a once in a while hobbyist wood worker so I cant see dropping 2500+ for this one device, though 700 that I got the 735x for is no small amount either. Just that wood has gotten so damn expensive I figure better to buy crappier cheaper and plane it to perfection over a few years I would imagine the savings in wood cost would pay for the planer. But yah, curious if you compared the helical cutter on the Dewalt.. or thought of just upgrading that instead of buying the Grizzly and why you went with the Grizzly.. or maybe you didnt even consider the helical blade option for the 735x?

    • @Ingrainwoodwork
      @Ingrainwoodwork  4 месяца назад

      For me, the most impressive difference is not only the sound, but the power as well. The 735 is loud without wood, so it’s not going to be much quieter. That machine was great for me for a long time but it got to be so time consuming because some pieces of lumber I could barely take anything off of them without it bogging down. For what you’re doing, that helical upgrade will be perfect!

      @@Ingrainwoodwork I have the Dewalt 734 planer, which has been a reliable workhorse for a long time, but it just doesn't have the power to take deep cuts, and it takes forever to plane a 4 quarter board down to .75 inches, and it bogs down easily if I turn the crank more than about 1/4 of a turn (which I think means less than 1/32 of an inch)

    Have you noticed any snipe with this machine? I've been looking at a Grizzly G0891. I'm using an old Ryobi that causes excessive snipe at both ends of the board and there's no way to fix it.

    • @Ingrainwoodwork
      @Ingrainwoodwork  6 месяцев назад +1

      I have some snipe right now because I haven’t taken the time to adjust my infeed and out feed. With some fine adjustments I could eliminate but for now I just run extra material so I can cut it off each end (about 3”).

    • @thehappychiselllc
      @thehappychiselllc 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@IngrainwoodworkThat's about the amount I get, 3" per end. Typically I'll stop planing before I reach my target thickness and then use my jointer to take care of the snipe. It's extra work but it saves some expensive hardwood.
