    Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. We are about to install one on our 16" Jet. I took screenshots and turned your video into a PDF instruction packet we could use in the shop, since WiFi doesn't work well out there. I think this will be invaluable!

    Great video, well done. A tip for re- assembly, put the shafts/bearings in the freezer, then use a small pin nozzle butane torch..( not a blowtorch) to heat the bearing seats slightly. It will go together like butter, but you have to work quickly. For the single bearing on the far end of the cutter, you could place the place the entire gearbox/cutter I. The freezer, or get a can of electronics cold shot, freeze the bearing, again warm the seat with the mini torch and it'll go together no heavy hammering needed. I do this all the time at my job as a field service engineer, a very old machinist trick that works awesome. Just a little cooling/heating in the right spots goes a looooong way!...and obviously, your using an open flame....use your head!!!!

    Thank you so much for going to the effort of recording this in so much detail, its so comprehensive. I’ve had a shellix cutter head sitting in its box for years, probably 12 years or more. I couldn’t find anyone to fit it for me and didn’t have the confidence to do it myself. I have a 15 inch Jet planer and it now has the shellix cutter installed - it never would have happened without your video. Thank you.😊

    Just replaced my cutterhead on a Powermatic 15s and i ran into the same issue with the seal not seating properly which lead to oil leak. Thankfully this was an easy fix. Your model jet is literally the same exact one as the Powermatic which comes to no surprise as they are coming out of the same factory. Nice attention to detail and great video!

    I am trying to figure out how to justify a $750 USD cutter head? I can possibly see it being cost effective in a full time shop where it is run all day, and you can quickly rotate a nicked insert. It looks like you can rotate each cutter insert 4 times before you have to change the dull insert. But that's a lot of cutting. So what made you purchase such an expensive cutter head? Just curious.

  • @p8ntblr1
    @p8ntblr1 2 года назад +1

    One question. Did you replace the pulley side bearing as well? I didn't see it in the video and I'm having a real hard time installing it. I currently put the whole byrd head in the freezer hoping it will somewhat contract the shaft for me to get the bearing on.

    • @catspawcustoms
      @catspawcustoms  2 года назад

      I don’t think so, but after a year I can’t remember 100%. I’m inclined to say no since I included everything except taking the gearbox apart the second time after the leak.

  • @NSResponder
    @NSResponder Год назад

    Gear oil in a machine like this can last for decades, unlike motor oil. It's engine heat that makes motor oil go bad. You could have just run that oil through a couple of coffee filters and it woudl be fine.

    For anyone about to do this:
    1 - I was able to open my gear box by finding a small lip on the cover and putting a flat head screwdriver on that and start tapping and that worked well requiring minimal prying to protect the seal.
    2 - I tried really hard using a mallet to get the old cutter head out but the gear puller was also necessary. And I hit it hard.

    My old Grizzley 15" looks like a near carbon copy of your Jet 15" planer. Like, even down to using the same castings for the gearbox.
    I suspect alot of 15" planers are just rebadged copies of a much older 15" planer design.
    The Shelix instructions are kind of badly written, too. Wish I'd watched more videos first. As carbon copy-ish as some of these planers are, there are some key crucial differences. For example, on my Grizz, the "outboard" bearing (the one closest to the gearbox) has a capscrew with a washer threaded into the gearbox housing to prevent the cutterhead from being able to be backed out. Washer contacts the outer race of the cutterhead bearing. The Shelix instructions don't mention it at all. Yours appears to have it, too.
    You really need to take your time on these planers and very carefully look and make sure there's nothing interfering or locking anything into place before you try to tap the old cutterhead/gearbox out. Because the manuals may not warn you.
