  • This is a video I've been wanting to make for a while. We're going into many more details about armour modules, where to aim etc. This video will cover some of the groundwork, with more to come looking at particular ships in the future.

    When I’m in my Kongo I always go in games that have atleast one Fusou and that would sometimes interfere with my win rate. After learning how to angle and where to hit where it hurts I’m slightly thankful. Now I just rush towards them if their alone and punch a hole right through their citadel.

      Thanks, and welcome aboard. That was my intent when starting this, to give information to players that'll give them a fighting chance against those who have heaps of experience. The game has quite a bit of tactical depth, and I'm still learning every day.

    Very interesting video again! I will put that into action in my guys more consciously now, thx.
    From my first feeling, I can totally confirm your observation. I just had a few fights today in my Nagato, where I aimed for the bow and scored quite a couple of those beautiful 1.7k hits per hit... Making the opponent run as fast as I didn't expect he can go. ;)

    Nice vid! I think it's also important not to shoot underprotected areas of a ship with BB guns. For example, in the North Carolina, one must shoot at a cruiser in the engine section to ensure that the shells wouldn't overpenetrate.

    This is what cemented Belfast and Cleveland as some of my favorite mid tier cruisers besides Kutuzov

      I haven't played the Belfast yet, but Cleveland is a beast. Currently trying to get through the honour missions that ask me to go cap, which is mildly offputting in a support cruiser :)

    I tested the theory and I makes sense. Used the Gascogne, and Cleveland to verify the results. Shooting at the middle (or super structure) got me allot of overpens or semi-pens. When you shoot at the rear of the ship, you get full pens (and the chance of disabling the rudder).

      It does not prove the complete theory but for the aiming part, avoid the superstructure :-)

      Still curious if your theory also works with the AP from the Minotaur; full pens at the rear?

      @@PolderPiraat Uh, as much as penetration is concerned, aiming at the rear with BB AP is really useless. I already tried it, it made little damage to the ship. Aiming at the upper belt or citadel will cause huge damage (with BB AP).

    Hey Terry. Great vids. Does “precise aiming” skill work with AA guns and bombers? How does the skill really work.

      Thanks, always glad to hear it. I'm pretty sure precise aiming has nothing to do with AA or dive bombers, it should affect the guns only. In-game description says that it improves "gun accuracy" between 25 and 35% (depending on the skill tier). From what I've observed so far, it affects dispersion - your shells fall in a tighter grouping when the skill is active, giving you a better chance of hitting where you aim.

    so going bow-in in a cruiser actually makes you more vulnerable in a way because any BB shell that would normally overpen your hull becomes a full pen

    Gee thanks for focusing specifically on how to do maximum damage to the Fuso, now that I just happen to be grinding that particular ship! It's been frustrating enough playing it with horrible random teams, and now players will learn how to kill it even easier! Lol
    I'm trying to work my way up to the Nagato, since the Gneisenau looks to be a difficult ship to do well in. I've also had the Normandie for quite some time, but I've barely played it, so I could start grinding it to get the Lyon, but honestly I'm not a good enough battleship player to accurately determine which of these 3 tier 7 BB's is best, so I'm in no big hurry to make a choice. However, it would be nice to know which line not to waste my time with....

      Don't waste time on the German line. The Bismark is a pretty good ship but the grober kurfurst and the freddy are not very good (Because the dispersion is god awful. The french line is really good and so is the Japanese too.

      @@onewingedangel6196Thanks.. So, the Lyon and the tier 8 French battleships are good, with accurate guns and not the worst possible handling compared with other BB's? What about the Nagato and Amagi?

      The Amagi is my favorite tier 8 BB. The Guns are super accurate and do a lot of damage. It has paper thin armor so you have to turn and dodge a lot but it handles very well for a BB. You don't get a lot of bounces with the Amagi. But the tier 9 (Izumo) is a pain to play. I forgot to mention but what makes the German line really bad is the turning radius and time it takes to turn. The ships are so large and so slow to turn that even if you guess someone launched torps you still can't dodge. The French ships have weak armor so watch out because Amagi's and Bismark's will make life hard. But just angle and you should be good:) I only have up to the tier 8 but the Tier 9 french ship should just play the same as a Dunkerque or Richelieu. Just point your bow at the enemy and they won't hit you. Pretty troll I think:D

      German line bad? Yes for noobs. For normal players german ships are very sturdy with hardhitting guns

      You get set on fire so much (Does not help if a noob puts out only 1 fire). The deck burns so much. The dispersion is extremely bad at long range and you need to get close to do damage but its hard to find dumb players who are alone. The german BB line may have more health but I feel the German ships are at a disadvantage when you can get a hard hitting accurate ship like the Amagi. But then again, I don't play a lot of BBs, I just play cruisers and Carriers. A good Cv player can burn down a German ship in 3 or 4 strikes. The German cruiser line on the other hand... Now that's a good line

      Respawn mode was very usefull for those honor missions, like cap 35times in cleveland.. one match was like 3cap points 😅
      But most just come easy by playing.. kill cruiser / bb in north caro.. thats the job 🙃

    Another video idea. Explaining how exp and free exp system works. Some things give more than others. Free xp is supposed to be a percent of reg xp but I'm finding too many discrepancies.

      @@FunandGameswithTerry I've noticed I don't earn as much as I used to. Really good games don't reward me with much exp anymore even for a win. Wonder if they quietly reduced earnings 🤔

    Not all engine rooms are under smoke stacks. Some ships have offset smoke stacks.

      good point, I was simplifying that a bit. I don't know how detailed the citadel models are - is it just the full hitbox, or do you have to hit e.g. a magazine or the engine room to citadel? I've been frame-by-frame reviewing some shots, but it's super hard to track which shell goes where, exactly. In case I can determine some pattern, I'll make another video about it.

      @@FunandGameswithTerry when firing long range I don't like how shells " cross over" each other's paths. I don't think that's accurate. I don't see that on any replay for PC game.

    Hate that angling doesnt work. Now i know angling doesnt do anything, they might as well remove the armour.

      I can see the rationale, though - imagine a Richelieu bow-in the whole game, and shells just bounce off. WoWs PC is much more about angles, but they also have much longer battles to work with. In Blitz, you have 5-6 minutes tops of fighting time.
      Armour still counts, as in different modules having different thickness, and giving a lower profile can "tank" a lot of shots, given the limited amount of salvos e.g. a battleship can fire during a game.

I would like to have a mod where the time is 2 times a much and different stuff. And don't you think not being able to utilize what you have is kind of not useful.

    In theory a cruiser hit to the main belt on fuso shouldn't pen. Overmatch is probably not in the game. Many cruiser guns at tier 5 are not very large.

      the "semi pen" mechanic is a tad sketchy. I'm mentally filing that under "has penetrated the outer layer of armour, and exploded somewhere in the space between that and one of the inner layers.
      yeah, pretty sure overmatch isn't there, since angling isn't, either.

    Fuso is a floating superstructure. Hitting forward and aft superstructure isn't that hard. Not many aim for superstructure. I do. If I'm firing HE I go for the tasty tinderboxes on the deck lol.

      what's your take on the "deck protection" module? It doesn't change any of the visible stats, but I've been using it on my German BBs, which tend to be rather flammable, and it felt like it improved things.
      I also wonder if there's a difference in fire chance between hitting e.g. belt and superstructure. There should be, but no idea if that's an actual mechanic.

      @@FunandGameswithTerry I think fire chance does get changed depending where you hit. Take the Agincourt for example. Hit the belt no fires. Hit super structure and 1 to 3. I have not used fire protection for deck as my mods of choice are steering. Even on a BB. Yep it's possible to circle another BB and make his main guns irrelevant. Duping another BB to start turning a direction you want him to go and then turn another direction leaves them vulnerable if they don't have steering mods. I want my ship to handle like a speed boat not a barge lol.

    I'm more surprise about fact we can citadel enemy with HE!!. Sometime i think the armor its completely just a nonsense number.

      it's not that outlandish. I haven't explicitly pointed it out, but a citadel requires a shell to have just the right amount of penetration and right point of impact, such that it detonates within the citadel. AP has more penetration power than HE, and HE can't overpen, but if you get a sufficiently powerful HE shell that can overcome the armour, since it can't overpen, that's actually not a bad thing. Nelson is quite notorious for doing that to cruisers with her HE.

    In the early days of world of tanks, camo / spotting range was key... later the meta was more about random matches and angle of armor.. warships came and same applied, but in very slow pace and more pain if team sucks..
    tanks now is if you dont own or paid for russian medium tanks with wicked armor and dps you suck
    Ships, its more like a collectors edition, if you start fresh you cant comped .. but teamwork would be key..
    Blitz tanks is p2w with bad movement
    Blitz ships is also p2w but movement and situational awareness actually matters, in teammode same old tactic as in early wot days win, spot - move as a unit..
    And yes aiming matters, being an edinburg you learn to aim for the bow of a bb and see it works.. playing op premium midtier ships.. it doesnt matter 🤪

      I haven't played tanks blitz - only tried it once log ago, realised I absolutely suck and the controls don't work for me on a 7'' screen, gave up.
      Probably the most powerful mechanic in ships is concentration of fire. You don't even need to be in a division or on voice comms. Just had a game in my Cleveland, triple cap, spawned next to a Benson, so sailed alongside him. We ran into a Gadjah and a Kagero, who were excellent players, and kept the cap saturated with torps. But the Gadjah couldn't hide from radar, and I had hydro up to spot torps - we eventually wore them down, and could then take the game from there.
      I'll make a video on that, but it's possible to work with random teammates if you read them correctly

    Nice video Terry, 2 years in and not a single straight forward answer from wargaming on any of the modeling of armor or pen values.. it is almost like they are ashamed of the topic.

      it's a well-guarded secret...? I'd be super happy to even just have an armour stats view like on PC. So far, I'm interpolating from historical values and forums research, even the wiki often lists armour as something like "75%" or "6-400mm", which, while probably correct, is also absolutely useless. So if anyone has online resources on armour stats, I'd be keen to know :)

    If your theory is correct, and it seems to be at least close to the truth, the armor statistics we get are some of the least important ones.

      these percentages are actually rather interesting. "damage reduction", for example, is an actual factor - you can see that actual_damage = potential_damage * (1 - reduction_factor / 100). E.g. if you'd do 400 alpha damage on a full pen, and your target has 10% damage reduction, you end up doing 360 effective damage.
      Now, does that translate to the other values we get to see? I believe so. "15% citadel production" would mean that when a shell hits the right area with the right penetration, the chance of it being a citadel hit is multiplied by 0.85.

      I don't think damage saturation exists as a game mechanic, but that's a good idea. I'll see if that matches my theories.

      @Perocean That doesn’t really make any sense in blitz. Pretty much getting damaged in blitz will blacken every part of your ship, even if it hit the, lets say, superstructure of your ship, but it will blacken even the bow.

      it would certainly be interesting, although we'd still not have citadels and torp hits being nearly as punishing as they are in PC.

    Step 2: angle
    Step 3: piou piou citadel goes down
    Step 4: profits??

    We need someone to decrypt the game and give us the armor stats. Wargaming is keeping quiet not releasing anything is suspicious.
    Plot twist all armor isn't armor. Shells have a pen chance.....
    Yikes that would be scary if it would be true. Also lazy development.

      I wonder if the damage calculation is even done on the client. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't - would be too easy to "hack" and send back inflated damage numbers. Entirely possible that these are calculated on the server (I think I've seen slight delays in those, on occasion, which would point towards that).

      @@FunandGameswithTerry I have heard of hacking. But I haven't seen it when I play. Only thing I can think of is I've seen someone skipping ahead. But I wrote that off as lag. He still took damage and was killed cause it was easy to predict location to shoot at. The only hack I think that is used is gold. From what I understand it's not hard to do. I know people modify APKs and give those out. Making u have like 5bil gold ect. Just can't use your actual account.

    Ah the fuso. One of the ugliest ships in world of Warships Blitz lol. I think a majority of people who play wowsb need to watch this video because a majority of players don't know how to aim and it's just sad (well not when their on the enemy team). Not only that but so many players don't realize that their ships have no armor. One day I was in my North Carolina. And a Cleveland decided to give me a full broadside. So he went from having full health to having well......none.

      As a cleaveland player I always shoot from the furthest range or if I have to, I'll us islands and pop out when a Battleships is on reload. It's so frustrating playing this way though at high tiers because on wrong mistake and your health drops down so much. I wish all the maps had lots of islands. If I get a map like aurora there are no islands down the center and so I can't help push down the center.

      @@onewingedangel6196 I love the Cleveland but I'm more of a battleship player. What I hate the most is when cruiser players act like destroyers or battleships. Whenever I'm in my NC, or Lyon, I expect that the cruisers on my team will act like cruisers. Using island cover and supporting us battleships. We need more cruiser players like you. Players who have the ability to think and breath at the same time.
