I just wanted to say, if you're a first time mom watching this and stressing about your baby sleeping "right," it's going to be ok! We didn't sleep train at all, contact napped a ton, and nursed to sleep for quite a while. My daughter slept through the night at 6 weeks old and has been a pretty great sleeper overall. Sleep can be really different baby to baby. I know some people who really liked sleep training, but I just wanted to snuggle my baby pretty much 24/7. If you do want ro contact nap, I highly recommend getting a wrap or carrier you really like. I used the k'tan wrap from the time my daugher was born. I'd just strap her on and do whatever I needed to accomplish while she slept. In the end, just do what works best for you and your baby!
None of the things we did are requirements for every baby to sleep well! This is just what we did to help us as a family be our best and work for our personal goals. That’s why I said it’s important to know what you personally want to to accomplish before you consider sleep training at all. If contact naps work for you, there’s literally no reason to stop doing them! I just needed my baby to sleep independently because I had to exclusively pump for a couple of months to be able to feed him while he recovered from his oral ties and I had to pump while he was sleeping or I would’ve been pumping the entire time he was awake which would not have worked.
Thanks so much for answering these questions!! I love how you guys are raising him, and I will definitely check out that book. Next, please show us how you're potty training him so young!
Wow you guys are so lucky to have a good sleeper! I know you also put in a lot of work, it's not 100% luck and temperament, but some of us (🙋♀️) also put in a lot of work and dont get results
Baby Wise is an amazing resource. The key issue is consistency. We had six kids and they all slept the night through by 12 weeks. That's six different kids with different personalities. I'm convinced that most folks who say, "You've been blessed with a good sleeper, I wasn't." were not consistent with trying to sleep train their kids.
I love Babywise. Worked great for my first, who was a born napper, and worked great for my second, who hates to sleep. Both slept 8+ hours by 4 months. Having kids who sleep through the night has made me want to have more.
Enjoyed hearing your honest take about your experience thus far, and how you're picking and choosing what advice works for you. There's no sense in people feeling guilty for not following these "rules" when they're subjective. So I'm glad you're able to disabuse yourself of disciplinary dogma and recognize, like you said, that he's growing and learning and so are you! -- Hope this less-rest phase passes quickly~~
Great video Jordan and Sara! Thank you for sharing some baby wisdom. I look forward to every video y'all put out. Keep making the good, God honoring content! 😁
I really appreciate y’all sharing! We are expecting our first in June and I’m really excited to hear what strategies have worked for different people. Just trying to put all the tools in my metaphorical mom-belt 😅
I tried Babywise with my first, but it didn't really work for me. There were a few things i took from it. My theory is, there is no one perfect way from one book for every family. Take the good and what works and leave the rest. Also, each of my 3 babies we did things completely different. I'm now pregnant with my 4th and it probably will look very different as well. I also care alot less about getting stuff done at this stage because it goes by so fast. With my third i did contact naps. I thoroughly enjoyed them.
Obviously every baby and family is different. As I mentioned in the video, I didn’t only use babywise and I didn’t follow it exactly either. This is just what has worked for us because a lot of people were asking us about it, not a specific method we think everyone needs to follow. That’s one reason why I said that you should have clear goals in mind before you start. Not everyone needs or wants to have a baby who sleeps independently but I wouldn’t have been able to breastfeed if I couldn’t put him down for naps so it was pretty important for us!
I liked Babywise! Like you said, it wasn't step by step. With my first, I needed additional details (I literally could not calculate a sleep schedule on paper, I was so tired and fuzzy). I found a Mother Far from Home, and she had sample schedules all laid out that I was able to use as a rough draft and adapt as needed. Chronicles of a Babywise Mom was also great! He slept through the night by 12 weeks. Now, I am 12 weeks with my second, and it's a lot harder to juggle with room sharing for them and whatnot. Feels like adding 3 expansions to Settlers of Catan 😅.
I think the problem with Babywise is not so much the book - we used it & it was invaluable. However, our church group at the time turned it into a legalistic set of rules & when we were around them they would hover & ensure we followed it to the letter without taking context into account- as you mentioned Sarah. We were very young , easily influenced & felt intimidated by this group. You two are independent, confident thinkers who know your own minds. Some people come from dysfunctional backgrounds which makes them more susceptible to pharasaical attitudes.
I had a family member who did that. They did everything by the Babywise book and did not take anything into context. I sleep trained and used things like the Eat, Awake, Sleep schedule and it worked well for me. You just always have to remember that every day is a little different and sometimes baby needs to eat more, sometimes they might sleep at different times. I like having a routine rather than a schedule.
Wow, that’s so weird and terrible that your church did that! That’s definitely not ok and I don’t think the book was intended to be used like that. What I liked about the book is it seems to me like it’s not meant to be a strict set of rules, more of flexible guidelines and it’s up to the parents to look at their baby and make decisions about what is best for their family.
Honestly it's really sad that you guys are promoting this dangerous book. Babywise is associated with infant dehydration, failure to thrive, and low milk supply. I'm glad to hear you so feed to sleep, which is a perfectly natural thing for a baby to do. You may not have seen any harmful effects but the book is dangerous and others will think it's safe because of you
Have you even read the book? 😂 Most people who say things like that haven’t read the book and are surprised to find out what it actually says. All that would be impossible from following the book because it basically teaches to work on making sure your baby is getting more than enough milk so they’re not hungry when they’re trying to sleep and to feed your baby whenever they show hunger cures, how you would think that’s dangerous information that would lead to failure to thrive is beyond me. My baby went from being underweight and me having a low supply because of oral ties to increasing my supply and having a chunky healthy baby using babywise. Feeding to sleep actually caused me to get mastitis which lowered my supply so I’m currently working to break that habit. It might be natural but that doesn’t mean it’s the best way to do things. Even lactation consultants will tell you to keep the baby awake while feeding. I honestly think it’s sad how many lies are spread about what the book actually is about and no one seems to actually read it to know for themselves before saying judgy things this this.

We did the same! And "sleeping through the night" is considered 4-5 consecutive hours.

Babywise parent here, sounds so much like my experience! My kids are 13 and 10 now! 😊
Love this! Owen is amazing

@ Yeah, I wish I’d had the maturity & discernment to see it that way. Owen is blessed to have you both as his parents ! 💕
The day my son turned 6 months old his appitite shot through the roof and he was feeding 12 times a day for 45+ minutes.
Thanks for sharing!

Have to disagree. Babywise worked great for both my kids and they're both healthy. You just need to do what's best for your family.
