Ok now as an adult that SCREWS with me. He's warning his grandson about the dangers of not living in real life, but that's because his life is full of potential and purpose. But as an old man who's lost his legs and possibly many of his friends in spy missions, grandpa has NOTHING--or he feels that way. For just one moment he let himself be consumed by the despair of his life, and that's so fucking heavy.
"Alright. I shall go back, if you promise me that even though I will be in a wheelchair--" and you frickin fricks didn't let me hear the emotions.
But that's some huge bioethics lesson right there, folks.
Those of us who have gone through traumatic experiences and who have lost something as important as leg function will feel like the world has nothing to offer them--unless we love them just the same as we always have.
SPY KIDS WAS TEACHING OUR KIDS HOW TO BE GOOD PEOPLE
When you realise that there is a pretty awesome movie hidding inside in this one it makes me really sad. This movie could be totally about this incident between the grandpa and toymaker and the "dangers about not living in real life" could be its message. And look there is also a mega fucking twist with a pretty good moral in it: Everybody thought Granny wanted to free toymaker so he could get his revenge but in reality Granny just wanted to say to toymaker he forgives him. Why the hell are wewatching a movie that seens a mashups of many genres with no focus when we could have this awesome movie instead?

Lol, exactly. The walking on the beach thing was fair game. Even the birth thing; maybe he was still recovering in the hospital when she was born or something. But the wedding? At that point it sounds like he's just using the Toymaker as a convenient scapegoat for all the things he doesn't do with his family. "And you're also the reason I didn't go to my daughter's piano recital when she was six!"
(Side note, I feel like it's probably super ableist that they had the character want to stay in a literal virtual reality, away from his family and friends, just to not be disabled. Like, I feel like that's probably pretty messed up. But maybe I'm reading into it too much.)
@@TheAmityElf actually, in the first movie they show that their wedding is a secret spy wedding on a mountain or something, and it ends up getting attacked by helicopters, so I think it's pretty fair that they couldn't get him to the wedding. Or maybe they tossed that line in just to explain why they didn't cast her parents until the 2nd movie

i remember back when i had this movie i had lost the 2d version of it so i only had the 3d version but i also lost every pair of 3d glasses that it came with so i had to bear through the movie with the weird red and blue around the edges because i loved the movie that much

This movie is a good representation of what a fever dream is like
I worked for Rodriguez and he said he made this film like 75-80 minutes because that's what he read was the shortest a Hollywood feature could be. The studio basically made the whole moviemaking process, from script to screen, last less than a year because they wanted to pump it out.
as far as i know the entire spy kids movies was a huge rat experiment because he wanted to learn how to shoot with CG and his studio to make proper CG's to shoot Sin City,it paid off
