That''s history... I was there as orchestra member. Not at that piece, of course, because I am harpist. I played other concerts on that great Annecy festival. Thank you for broadcast. Greetings from St.Petersburg.

I suspecy there is a shared melancholy that links the English and Russian temperaments to such good effect in music, plus the feeling for martial splendour that is heard in the finale of this performance.

As an Englishman, I love to see Elgar played around the world, and this is the second fine performance of The Enigma Variations I've seen by a Russian orchestra this month.

I like Elgar very much. It's a pity about Benson's words to Land of Hope and Glory. They always put me off the last night of the proms! I am Australian and have a long family history of anti-colonialism. Six of my ancestors were both British and slaves! ( 7 to 14 years each) Marin Alsop introduced me to the fun of the last night and generally I feel amused rather than irritable about Elgar's pomp and circumstance aura. His long lines are gorgeous. In my late teens I loathed the 'pomp and circumstance' marches, but fortunately discovered Jacquelyn Du Pre's recording of the Cello concerto, then Janet Bakers 'Sea Pictures'. The Enigma Variations are wonderful.

I Have got in My Record Collection Elgar's 1926 Recording of the Enigma Variations Reissued in 1957 for the Century of Sir Edward Elgar's Birth by His Master's Voice Record Number ALP 1464 and the Transfer is very very good and Mutch better than the 1970's LP Transfer and it was so sad that he didn't live to see the 1935 Silver Jubilee Celebrations and there was two More Composers who also in the same year as Sir Edward Elgar 1934 Frederick Delius and Gustav Holst and Sir Edward Elgar Recorded for His Master's Voice from January 20th 1914 till 1934 and Gustav Holst Recorded for the Columbia Gramophone Company

And surely Mr Norris you are forgetting the Violin Concerto and More so the famous Historical 1932 Recording which Sir Edward Elgar Made with a 16 year old Yehudi Menuhin as well as Yehudi Menuhin's later 1966 Recording and both Recorded for His Master's Voice

@@martincook318 No I havent forgotten the violin concerto, or the symphonies or even the Dream of Gerontius. Still. for me personally. they aren't quite up there with Enigma or the cello concerto. This is of course a matter of taste but, in both Enigma and the cello concerto he achieves a clarity and a momentum which makes them perennial favourites. After the symphonies and the violin concerto I am always left a little bemused: his tendency to clutter his orchestral scores obscures his purpose. The symphonies I will always find difficult but, to be quite sure however I am now off to find a good recording of the concerto to see if I still agree with myself! I will get back to you.

Right, I just listened to Menuhin's performance of the concerto from 1932. Beautifully cleaned up digitally and yes superbly played but what a confused piece this is! I do hate to be negative but this is Elgar at his Edwardian grandest: overblown, over-orchestrated and, as I said before, lacking both clarity and real purpose except to show how much the violin can dominate. Elgar's slightly limited harmonic palette means that he overextends himself in all three movements. The finale is perhaps the most interesting but it is at least ten minutes too long for it's own good. I remember now why this piece is not on my "let's hear this again" list. Sorry to be so negative!

Why all this emphasis on Elgar being English? He was a great composer period! Do people constantly refer to Hindemith or any other great composer always in reference to their country of origin? People around the world love Enigma or the cello concerto etc. because they are great works.
