SOMETIMES ITS NICE TO REPAIR INSTEAD OF REPLACE

- I NOTICED A SQWEEKING NOISE COMING FROM THE GRADALL. I HAD EXPERIENCED A DEAD BATTERY A COUPLE OF TIMES THIS WINTER. I ASSUMED IT WAS THE BATTERY AS IT I OPUT IT IN OVER 6 YEARS AGO. I NOTICED THE ALTERNATOR FRON BEARING WAS DESTROYED. RATHER THAN GO TO THE PARTS STORE AND GET WHATEVER CHEAPEST CHINA REPLACEMENT THEY HAD, I WOULD JUST REPLACE THE BEARINGS IN THIS CASE. I WENT LOOKING FOR A BEARING AND FOUND A COMPLETE REBUILD KIT FOR $33. IT WASNT EXACTLY THE ONE I NEEDED BUT IT ALL WORKED OUT IN THE END.
G'day guys,
Another cool vid from the dynamic duo.
Love the work bench ,,,
If i tidy it up , you wont know where anything is .
Great teamwork guys.
Respect....!
Thanks for sharing this information with us. I really appreciate it and your content. I'm learning a lot. Thanks again
Man I love my snap on ratchet like the one you use. That old ratchet earned its keep when I was a ford tech. Still helps when I call it into service again. My son just started wrenching and bought one just like it
Dude your time is worth alot more than a new alternator your a professional don't waste your time don't be cheap your time is valuable
im not a professional anything. this is my gradall and i use it daily. want to know how the alternator was rebuilt. not trust in whatever china junk the parts stores are carrying that day. i bet this alternator will be going long after others have failed.
Thank you for a great video.now I learned how to rebuild one
Nice work J.C! 🙂👍 It's refreshing to see a man like you, who knows his craft, diagnose a part rather than just replace it. The quality of "new" parts are lower than ever. 🔧🔩
There is a local shop here still rebuilding staters and alternators. I have saved tons of money going to them. They can never look at it when you drop it off but its always ready the next day when they open. The have everything in there, I'm sure theres even a starter for the SR71. I'm talking both V-8s...
Great video J.C.Smith it's nice when you can rebuild the alternator on you gradual. Thanks for sharing the process Mr& Mrs J.C.Smith.
Used to rebuild starters ,generators . . I still do on my own stuff . When we are gone , so will be this ability be gone . U need a bigger bench . Have a good one U 2 !
nope...just need less junk!
I didn’t want to take a chance on getting a bad alternator so I had mine rebuilt by an old school starter and alternator shop
hello J.C & Mrs Smith & it's is Randy and i like video is cool Thanks J.C & Mrs Smith Friends Randy
COOL REPAIR GOOD JOB..
Nice video and explanation. I have done a couple Bosch alternators when I had old Mercedes. This one didn’t even require any soldering that’s nice.
Excellent tutorial on the alternator rebuild…!
Thank you sir.
P.S., my work bench resembles yours, complete with layers of tools, parts & pieces… hahaha..!
I read a article that said sometimes when you go thru the alternator with self excieting regulator you have to exciete it the first time on start up then after that will do automatically
true, if it sat long enough without battery power hooked up it can loose its magneticity. then it requires a "jump".
Very cool video ! It's always a good feeling to repair something instead of throwing it awat for china garbage
Hi JC thank you for sharing 😅
I agree we should waste less and repair more but if I’m on the side of the highway, I’m swapping out my alternator with a new/rebuilt to get back on my way.
Hey Cj we got a gradall here at my job and it was completely broke down I swapped the motor already all the hydro hoses but it was missing the big cylinder like the extend retract one I think it’s called and I have no idea how to install it 😂 so if you could reach out or make a video thank you ✌🏽🤙🏽
So satisfying.
Don’t feel bad about your work bench being piled up. Mine is the. Exact same way.its the universal catch all in any shop!
I’ve learned from JC and others on RUclips that if you can fix it it will last longer than anything you can buy new these days.
I remember that is what we did bearings brushes diode plates all that
Parts are so hard to find
6203 bearingsfor the front
😎👍
My granddad used to work on electric motors. I remember stories of him taking an old alternator or generator possibly n rewiring it so you could plug it in to 110v the alternator would spin and charge the car battery. Wish I knew how to do that. 😂
just a matter of harness the a/c before its converted to dc.
@@j.c.smithprojects I wonder if he just hooked 110v to it before it converted it to DC? . The motor spinning might of been a by product?
The wedge style pulleys are common on equipment
It is a shop. If you have semi flat surface you going to stack things from new parts to old parts to testing equipment. It happens everywhere. Like boss said clean it up and poof it happens behind you.
Excellent video, did you touch one of the plug terminals to ground to start the alternator charging, or did you touch the two terminals together? Thanks for the video.
battery positive to the ignition terminal.
Many thanks@@j.c.smithprojects
Great video, I searched your videos for "cleaning" & didn't find any direct references, would you mind (at some point, when it's convenient) describing how you clean your parts? Thank you!!
greasy, oily parts get power washed first if warranted. after that it is parts washer with mineral spirits followed by a rinse off with brake and parts aresol and blown dry. this is only for parts that are not harmed by this method.
@@j.c.smithprojects Perfect, thank you!!
If you ever have a old truck alternator that needs rebuilding I’ll watch that
I’ve heard the single wire alternators have to spin like 1500 rpm before they self excite…or maybe it was 1500 engine rpm which of course varies based on drive ratios…point being I wonder if your impact just didn’t have enough rpm to get it to kick off and start charging
Also, iirc you need either a resistor or an incandescent light bulb in series with the excite wire to protect it from overcurrent. I know you put a diode in, not sure if that’s a resistor/diode
a light would be used to keep it from back feeding the electrical system through the ignition switch. the regulator will control the current amount. like i said in the video, this machine originally had a regular alternator that required ignition power to excite it. so the incandescent bulb (resistor) is already there.
Gotcha! Musta missed that part
I know the front bearings is bad and looking at the stattor has wear and wondering is the rest is worned out also..To mentioned it looked as a Gm alternator
So if I understood correctly... self exciting means if me and the lady were eating ice cream listening to country radio looking over the city at night and battery gets to low to start engine; she could take the belts loose and spin pulley for 5 mins by hand, reassemble belt, turn the key???
you would have to spin it fast enough to create the electric. probably not a reality.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith if what is on your bench does not prevent you from working on and completing your projects, it must be just fine. Also, do you find that during working on one thing, something from a past project is either perfect for the current project, or triggers an idea for a solution foe the current project. How much time is saved not putting everything "Away"? Away from where it is needed, away where you gotta go get it to use it... Leave it on the central point of the bench, you know where youre working....
it never bothers me. i always seem to get my work done the way i want so.....who cares.
It's not a catch all as Mrs JC ( lady ) just said it is a organized file for you because you know what and were it is when you need it to work on a specific project and that's what matters
The three phases electric generator that will put out the 115 to 125 volts off each phases
We got new kitchen cabinets two months ago, im still can't find anything my wife put everything away
Did you pack the bearing?
Is there a fan belt?
I went and looked at my workbench, 6 feet long and only 1 foot of semi clear work area.
i replaced the belt when i did the water pump. front bearing is sealed. rear bearing got a smidge of the good stuff.
The whole work bench issue, I call it “Horizontal Surface Problems”
The hammer.
Still.....For the money you can't beat a Delco.
I cant throw stones about the bench. Every horizontal surface in my shop is the same
You both have your program were it works for you that is what counts do not change your ways 32 to 33 years i know what you mean!!!
In my garage if it's messy ,I can find what I'm looking for. You clean up and you forget where you put it. That old saying is out of sight out of mind.
Your slider rings are pretty worn out
Fix it.
Yes it's cluttered but it's all paid for so how cares it's your bench
World of difference between a work shop and a look-ee shop not everyone can afford a full time pickup person unless they have a son under 12 years old. Have a great day. Tom
no pretending here. what you see is what it is. we dont say "we are building a truck" and then drop it off to someone else's shop to have the work done. all right here....right or wrong, its all me!
Bosch is the best and most reliable alternator
come one.....gm used this on millions upon millions of vehicles and it can be completely rebuilt for $32. you cant open a bosch alternator for $32.
Grade all last almost forever. Don't forget hydraulic fluid change suppose to do it 1 time per year. No body does then the pump goes because of condensation in tank. 5k for pump
easy to tell when folks dont watch the entire video.
Wayne and Wendy Whiner.
Bless your heart
6204 bearing Don't forget to replace the diode trio Stop rewind. Got ahead of myself. Thanks, the old school guy.
