RIP Talvela, I really love how he sounded here. I just wish I could have seen him while he still lived, but alas, I was barely one year old at the time.
It was a really tragic way to go, too. He had a heart attack and died at his daughter's wedding when he was 54.

I heard that too. I've heard a couple of basses in the past who have sang this aria go sharp on the low D, probably because it's really hard to hit and keep audible. Talvela does a great job with this, but I would have to say my favorite performance of this aria would have to be Kurt Moll doing it... so far. I have yet to discover more.

I heart Kurt Moll live in munich with Songs by J. Haydn amongst others. I mean I never heart a better low C than of Moll. Talvela misses a little bit of resonance here in the very low register..

Tobias Kehrer at Glyndebourne sings it in barque pitch, essentially a c#, perfectly in pitch and substantially audible. But I suppose Glyndebourne is a small theatre so he has no pressure to over project.

Even for as imposing a character as Osmin is, the music is still very light and happy. That is why I like Mozart.

MARTTI TALVELA TALKED ABOUT THAT LOW "D" DURING AN INTERVIEW. HE SAID THAT THE SCORE CALLED FOR A FEEBLE SOUNDING VOICE. A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THAT HE'S OFF-KEY, BUT IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE DONE THAT WAY. THERE ARE OTHER, SIMILAR ROLES THAT CALL FOR THE SAME. MT WAS THE GENUINE ARTICLE. THE GREATEST BASSO I'VE EVER HEARD.

In his 23 years at low D get. And when it comes to that I would go into C or low B (v contra octave). But in the song it is harder than trying to where the voice drops. ... :)

Masterful performance. As I would expect from one as legendary as Talvela. One thing though. Did he go a bit sharp on the low D, or are my ears playing tricks? Or maybe he purposely did so, for ornamentation's sake?

14 years late, but he definitely went sharp on that note. It seems even Talvela couldn't quite get down there. For my money, Kurt Moll still owns this aria.

I would politely suggest this is not a "low D fail," but a conductor fail. Hah! You know, singing a low D is easy peasy, I know a dozen lyric tenors who can do it any day of the week! But just try sing one over an orchestra while maintaining a consistent, beautiful bassy timber! Not so easy! This is a very difficult phrase to sing over an orchestra and Talvela's was probably the most imposing iteration of it ever heard in an opera house! Listen to any other version on RUclips and you'll hear the conductor striving to keep the orchestra at a dynamic where the bass can easily project over it. Here, Bohm probably thought with Talvela's cannon, he didn't need restraint. But when you're conducting freaking Talvela and even he has to sharp to make the phrase, the problem ain't Talvela, the problem's the conducting. Of course, Bohm's amazing, but as others have said, everyone has an off day.

lyric tenors who can sing low D? WTH?! MOST Tenors cannot sing G2 and lower(because anatomy, duh) and if they can it's very rare! And Lyric tenors' range is C3-C5, i can't understand how they're gonna sing D2, it is just beyond my mind. I think "lyric tenors" you know are actually baritones. Baritones usually can sing low D but it's most of the times very airy.

@@grinsekatzedecheshire7754 Depends which baritone. I, being a dramatic one can sing quite good D2 and go down to even A1 when my voice is relaxed. Some lyric baritones can do it too with fair power and sound.
