This is the Angas Road level crossing at Hawthorn, located in the southern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. There are two different tracks at the crossing, the eastern track is the broad gauge passenger line from Adelaide to Belair, while the western track is the ARTC standard gauge line from Adelaide to Melbourne.
The crossing has quite an odd and interesting mixture of equipment. All lights are incandescent, while both bells ring from start up until the gates have risen.
Eastern gated signal: Western Cullen Hayes base, GRS gate mechanism, NEG gate lights and a Safetran Type 3 electronic bell. The signal has one pair of GRS Lex-C lights and one pair of Western Cullen Hayes lights which are mounted on GEC brackets.
Eastern gate-less signal: Western Cullen Hayes base (also with Federal Signal logo) and one pair of GRS Lex-C lights which are mounted on a McKenzie & Holland bracket.
Western gated signal: Western Cullen Hayes base, GRS gate mechanism, NEG gate lights and a Safetran Type 3 electronic bell. The signal has three GRS Lex-C lights and one GEC light which are mounted on GEC brackets.
Western gate-less signal: GRS base and one pair of GRS Lex-C lights which are mounted on a McKenzie & Holland bracket.
Gate-less signal in southwest quadrant: Unmarked base and one pair of Western Cullen Hayes lights which are mounted on a McKenzie & Holland bracket.
Train information: Apart from two freight trains, all other trains are Adelaide Metro passenger services to/from Belair.
1st freight train: 2MP5 freight from Melbourne to Perth, with locomotives NR118, NR6 and G538.
2nd freight train: Genesee & Wyoming grain hoppers, hauled by locomotives GWA003, CLP16, CLP17 and GWA006. I'm not sure of the train number or destination, although it is most likely heading to Tailem Bend.
Filmed on May 8, 2018.
Very nice! There actually used to be lots of grs lex c lights in adelaide but most have been replaced. I actually filmed this same crossing on the 3rd of February this year and while the crossing has red crossbucks, the lex c lights are still there.
Thanks! It's cool that the Lex-C lights are still there, amazing that they haven't been replaced yet.
I guess those GRS LEX-C lights are exclusive to South Australia!
22:50 nice catch of two G&W cab units! I'm glad Austrlain railroads still use locomotives with this iconic body style!
There are also a small number of Lex-C lights in Queensland but that's all. I almost missed the G&W train but it sure was nice to catch those older locomotives :)
It’s cool to see quite a variety of lights! That being said, it’s sad that this is one of the last crossings in Adelaide to do so. I didn’t even know those newer types of GRS gate mechs existed! Nice to see you caught a GWA grain train! They sound very nice powering up the Adelaide Hills.
This was probably my favourite crossing from the Adelaide trip. I almost missed the G&W train, never had time to set up the tripod lol.
Ahhh, I'm not used to hearing bells that sound while the boom gates are rising, it's really disconcerting. Also, the GEC and GRS light combination at 3:17 looks so weird... and i hope it stays that way! Excellent video :)
Thanks! Most of the GRS lights around Adelaide have been replaced, it's a shame because there are lots of interesting light combinations there.
I've heard that GRS Lex-C lights are extremely hard to see in direct sunlight. Other than that, this is a rare and awesome setup.
Thanks! I noticed with the Lex-C lights that they have a narrow spread, unless you are looking directly from in front, they aren't really visible.
Great video! Love the Lex-Cs and newer GRS gate mechs! The lens in the GEC light is rather cool. I wonder if GEC was the predecessor to Alstom, based on the shape of the lights? Also interesting how one of the WCH lights had a cut background. Love those G&W Streamliners as well!
Thanks! GEC were the predecessor to Alstom. It was my first time seeing the newer GRS gate mechs, but hopefully not the last.
I was originally from south Australia but moved up north (northern territory) to live a new life
Are you considering making any more videos in Adelaide any time soon? Because if so, go to the Eastern Parade/Perkins Drive crossing in Port Adelaide
How do you know where the trains are going to because there is no timetable for freight trains?
Awesome catch and vid!
Thanks!
If you live near Adelaide, can you do Belford Avenue Dudley Park? It has mechanical bells and is my favourite trainspotting location
I live in Sydney, but if I get back to Adelaide again I would love to film that crossing.
McK&H Aust Okay, cool
Nice
sweet crossing yeah i go through that crossing sometimes but i wasn't lucky to catch you at that crossing if you were i would of stopped and had a little catch to you yeah i am a lover of railway crossing myself to
Thanks!
no problems mate :-)
LEX-C lights, now thats a rare fine, nice catch.
Did you know that LEX-C lights are all plastic!
Thanks! The Lex-C lights must have been made with a good quality plastic because they've done well to last this long.
Not really, from what i was told, LEX-C lights had a tendency to break easier
Do most of the Adelaide Metro crossings have safetran type 3 e bells?
Yes the Safetran type 3's are on most Adelaide crossings, although there are a small number of WCH e-bells, plus a few of the tram crossings have General Signals e-bells.
I've never seen an older GEC light before, just the GEC Alsthom ones...
There are four crossings in Adelaide with those GEC lights, managed to film two of them but it would be nice to get the others.
How about Pym st Dudley Park SA.
