  • Thresher sharks are the sharks with the really long tails. The top part of their tail fin can be as long as their bodies! Thresher sharks use this long tail fin to stun prey with a fast strike. There are three thresher shark species and they all have some unique features that set them apart from the others. One thresher shark species has massive gills, perhaps some of the largest known gills in any living shark! These sharks may seem scary simply based on the fact that they're sharks, but thresher sharks have been observed as shy creatures even fleeing from bubbles created by SCUBA gear. Generally, they're considered harmless to humans.

In over 50 years of scuba diving my most amazing experience e was being circled a few times by a bigeye thresher in an offshore night dive in Hawaii.
