I have a real Frankenstein's monster of a 158. The power car was fitted with internal lights and overhauled by someone before I bought it on eBay. The dummy unit, however, I bought in bits and assembled myself. A window was missing, which was annoying. All in Regional though.
Over the last few months, I've come to realise how much I love 158s. 159s, which are practically the same with an extra coach, are great too. 158 bashing never gets old.
When I first came across this channel, I liked comparing the view counts of this and the 170, and as Arriva operated through my home town with the 158 I always wanted this to get more views than the 170 video, and today it does. I feel quite honoured
I have got 2 Bachmann class 158s in the New Arriva Trains Wales Livery both with different numbers there are fantastic I have got 4 Bachmann class 158s in total
Bachmann are bringing out the East Midlands Trains & Regional Railways class 158... Hopefully this will be out late 13 early 14. They are a brand new build with DCC ready (regional railways is DCC sound fitted) looking forward to them both
Wow You've really improved your reviews, Great job ! I love that bird's eye shot that you do now. Keep up the good work, your videos are very enjoyable to watch !
I definitely recommend them, they're great! And yes, apparently the odd looking green isn't helped by the white skirting board - it would mean changing the camera settings just for Arriva liveried models lol - maybe I will see what I can do the next time I review a model wearing Arriva colours.
I see Class 158s ALL the time in Hartlepool. The First North Eastern livery (the old one with the purple and white stripe) and the new livery (white carriages with a purple swirl) is a mere shadow of what it once was
I've got this 'Exact' model Arriva Livery Dmu Class 158 /class 153 & class 150' and now waiting for royal mail to complete my fleet with hornby's class 142 pacer in arriva! Keeping them Pristine/Mint in my Glass cabinet for static display! 👍
In response to the green, it did look turquise at one stage, do you have your camera on manual white balance, if it's on auto that could cause the shift in colour. Again great review, really do enjoy your enthuasism. Never been interested in DMU's but between you and Everard I'm slowly changing my mind and may get one sometime if the price is right. I've just brought 15 yrd of Peco flexitrack, need to knock up some temporary 1x4ft baseboards and I'll do a video, I know you've expressed interest.
I live in Exeter next to st David's railway station and I go to Cardiff and see my best train the class 158,150,159,43,153 my best train classes EVER!!!
Your camera really doesn't like Arriva blue does it! :) Great vid, I remember when the 158 units first entered service and you're right, they were very prestigious and luxurious for their time!
Notice how with the 158 you can see the seats in the motor car Will! You complained about the 150 having blacked out windows. Well the 158 doesn't! Great review
Very good. You should get the 108 DMU by bachmann in BR Green with speed whiskers. It has interior lighting as well as head and tail ones and thats just with DC! . Bachmann DMU's are amazing!
Hey I just went on the Bachmann website and saw that they have their new 158 out in DCC fitted only. They are in East Midlands Trains and Regional Railways livery.
I'd recommend joining the Bachmann Club as I'm pretty happy with it. I was thinking of either joining that or the hornby club but from what I've recently read I think I did the right thing. There seems to be a lot of people coming out the hornby club as the impression I get is that it is going downhilll. You get some good articles in the magazine and rather surprisingly quite a lot are about the 'real railway' rather than models but that's no concern with me.
I have travelled on several 158s, usually on the Stockport - Sheffield trans pennine line. Not a bad ride, though Trans Pennine Express Air Con didnt usually seem to work, found it more comfortable to sit on the jump-seat in the compartment between the main passenger cabin and the drivers cab when the main cabin was full as it was often cooler than the main passenger cabin. oh Thailand brought 158s in meter gauge as well :D
Nice review :) its a shame the camera couldnt pick up the correct colour of ATW's livery. I'm planning on geting a new Bachmann 158 in Arriva Trains Wales livery, to go with my 150 and 153 :)
There were/are 4 variations on the Arriva 158 livery: the original ex-Wales & West silver and blue with just the Arriva logo, this livery with the white "horns" on the front, a similar green without the horns, and the new dark blue / green livery used on the re-furbished units.
Don't suppose you fancy doing a Heljan Railbus do you? It comes highly recommended by me - for starters I still can't get over the quality of the packaging let alone the train!
I just thought I would have a look on Wiki for the definition of Multiple Unit to make sure and these are the two main definitions; 'The term multiple unit or MU is used to describe a self-propelled carriages capable of coupling with other units of the same or similar type and still being controlled from one driving cab.' 'Single self-propelling carriages (also called railcars, rail motor coaches or railbuses) can be referred to as multiple units if capable of operating with other units.'
I used to work for Arriva and I used to find that the Pantone colour they use for the aquamarine is often difficult to pick up by cameras, photographs and even printers ! I think it's just one of those things!
Not quite - 158s were done in 2 and 3-car sets ( - the 159s are technically 158 units that were rebuilt with additional interior features like 1st Class and retention toilets for Network South East. 3-car 158s include 158798, 158752 - 158759 and the pesudo 3-car units now used by FGW designated 158/9
i am in the collectors club, you get a free wagon and access to exclusive events and models, you also get a quaterly magazine, but its easily the better collectors club to be in
I am in the bachman collectors club when you join you get a train, my train is a nice little class n2 in GWR livery, the one in oxford where I live is very well organized and he people there are very welcoming
Been a Bachmann club member continuously for the last seven years, unlike the intermittent Hornby membership. Bach's magazine is far superior to Hornbys, you get a free catalogue and a nice calender each Xmas. Their PO wagon that you get for joining is much more useful for a "serious" railway modeller. Only negative is the lack of a members discount in shops (never used the Hornby one anyway).
same :) because i havnt actually got one but if you watch everyardjunction ( a great channel ) loco's fleet he shows that when you put it on the layout even though his is raised you can only see its blacked out right up close you can not see they're blacked out when it on the layout which is why i dont think it matters. do you have one
to be honest it's not just the fact that one of the units is blacked out - it's also a very noisy model! All I'm saying is sometimes Bachmann pay more attention to the outside of their models than they do the insides.
I agree with you, but multiple unit means that the unit itself can be coupled to other multiple units of similar class. For example in my area, you often see a 155 with a 153 tagged on the back. Besides, the 153s used to be 155 DMUs anyway until they were 'sliced up' as you might say! It is very confusing.
RE: Air Con on class 158s... Air Con? When it's working! Bit like the heating! They both work only when the opposite is needed! Or not at all. I remember being stuck on one at Doncaster a few years ago. It was at least -8 outside! I do like them though. 153s and 150s also Good video. Just wish Bachmann would make them DCC ready!
I'm pretty new to train talk ( invented it now :p ), but I wonder if there are ANY portuguese trains modeled, or trains that are used in Portugal? I travel regularly in trains to Lisbon, as I first stop in Barreiro ( south side of the river, I live near there ) and then go on a boat across the river to Lisbon. Will you answer me please? :(
7 years later, Bachmann have finally released that new 158
Spirit V70 dam it! Beat me to it’
I have a real Frankenstein's monster of a 158. The power car was fitted with internal lights and overhauled by someone before I bought it on eBay. The dummy unit, however, I bought in bits and assembled myself. A window was missing, which was annoying.

Excellent review Will as always however.....I wouldn't expect anything less from you! Top-man again! Cheers, John.
Your first favourite livery. Good English!
I'm in the Bachmann Club! I really enjoy being a member. You get really nice magazines and exclusive offers!
Bachmann are bringing out the East Midlands Trains & Regional Railways class 158... Hopefully this will be out late 13 early 14. They are a brand new build with DCC ready (regional railways is DCC sound fitted) looking forward to them both
5 ears later: Where are they?!
Wow You've really improved your reviews, Great job ! I love that bird's eye shot that you do now.
Keep up the good work, your videos are very enjoyable to watch !
Really enjoyed watching the video..looking forward to the next review..makes it a bit easier choosing my next loco !
thank you for the comment!
Definitely! You won't regret it. Bear in mind the new one is coming out soon too.
I definitely recommend them, they're great! And yes, apparently the odd looking green isn't helped by the white skirting board - it would mean changing the camera settings just for Arriva liveried models lol - maybe I will see what I can do the next time I review a model wearing Arriva colours.
These trains are not toys they are a hobby
I love class 158, I really want one, but not sure on livery but I like Northern rail the most tbh!
This is amazing will i loved the part at 14:49 with all the LMS engines in line you said "i love this class 1 158 instead of 158"
14:49
I see Class 158s ALL the time in Hartlepool. The First North Eastern livery (the old one with the purple and white stripe) and the new livery (white carriages with a purple swirl) is a mere shadow of what it once was

In Hull we have northern rail c2 coaches on most of their class 158,144 and 153
+Kai Poole we have both Northern and East Midlands Trains class 158s in Sheffield.
+Matthew Robertson I have first great western train livery
+Cheeky Rollins It is very rare for us to get a 158, all we get is the 333, 321 and 322.
thank you for the info! You learn something new every day!
When can you review the Freightliner or Colas Rail class 70 by bachmann?
perfect! how ever i do miss these going down the cross city line (n)
In response to the green, it did look turquise at one stage, do you have your camera on manual white balance, if it's on auto that could cause the shift in colour.

interesting! I hear the opposite from shop owners! lol I shall keep an eye on the situation.
have you done a review of a class 66? cos I want one. By the way does it come with freight?
Nice looking DMU, I am hoping to pick up both of the new 158s when they come out.
I wish I could come to your house
I live in Exeter next to st David's railway station and I go to Cardiff and see my best train the class 158,150,159,43,153 my best train classes EVER!!!
Nice vid and a nice addition!
I'm waiting bachmann for that tpe 185!! :D
Your camera really doesn't like Arriva blue does it! :) Great vid, I remember when the 158 units first entered service and you're right, they were very prestigious and luxurious for their time!
I'd give this DMU 10\10
Excellent review! Very smooth performance there :)
Lovley loco nice vid :D
i have got one of them this is the third train that really got me in to the hobby
Notice how with the 158 you can see the seats in the motor car Will! You complained about the 150 having blacked out windows. Well the 158 doesn't! Great review
Exactly - proving that it can be done! So why did they not bother with the 150? I just don't know.
that's quite a long road, with the southern end of it practically coming out at Crewe Works if I'm not mistaken.
Nice review, im guessing these are like a subway train? If so I think I shal pick up some in the northern livery!
The workhorse of the Cambrian Coast line... Nice
Great review - my favoutite too. I have 3 - the arriva one, regional railways 3 car and network southeast 3 car - they're superb.
Very good. You should get the 108 DMU by bachmann in BR Green with speed whiskers. It has interior lighting as well as head and tail ones and thats just with DC! . Bachmann DMU's are amazing!
I have a regional railways class 158 but i would prefer an arriva but i could not find an arriva version. Do you want to swap.
Hi
Your reviews are great!!!
I've got a question?
Shall I get a class 153 northern rail livery or a class 158 northern livery.
Thanks
ahhh right! Thanks for the info - don't feel quite so bad now haha
haha thank you - will do!
Its driving on the hornby tracks?
Hey I just went on the Bachmann website and saw that they have their new 158 out in DCC fitted only. They are in East Midlands Trains and Regional Railways livery.
I know you are A very busy man with your layout and channel stuff but will you fit some of your dmus with sound chips?
I’ve got a regional railways 158, and it’s really good!

were do you buy your trains from
I LOVE that idea. Thanks for the comment!
thank you my friend!

I thought promises were meant to be fulfilled.
thats the east midlands livery by bachmann
have you done a caledonian sleeper yet?
If you look at 15:50 onwards, you can see that the camera changes the livery from turquoise to lime green. :?
Not quite - 158s were done in 2 and 3-car sets ( - the 159s are technically 158 units that were rebuilt with additional interior features like 1st Class and retention toilets for Network South East. 3-car 158s include 158798, 158752 - 158759 and the pesudo 3-car units now used by FGW designated 158/9

It isnt Markling But It's Roco Or Fleishman coupling in the Netherlands

not sure yet!
Excellent job mate
Thank you for the comment! I shall do my best.
I'm afraid I do not know where you can buy models of trains that run in Portugal.
You can find it around, yes.
I think the green on the camera looks great on her
The couplers are the standard coupling of mostly each coach/locomotive.
I really want a 158 but I'm going to wait for the new tooling that Bachmann announced this year. Regional Railways Express livery of course.
to be honest it's not just the fact that one of the units is blacked out - it's also a very noisy model! All I'm saying is sometimes Bachmann pay more attention to the outside of their models than they do the insides.
various model shops really. I try to shop around at many different ones.
I agree with you, but multiple unit means that the unit itself can be coupled to other multiple units of similar class. For example in my area, you often see a 155 with a 153 tagged on the back. Besides, the 153s used to be 155 DMUs anyway until they were 'sliced up' as you might say! It is very confusing.
not in a rush to. Have loads of locos to do before a model like that.
RE: Air Con on class 158s...
Air Con? When it's working! Bit like the heating! They both work only when the opposite is needed! Or not at all. I remember being stuck on one at Doncaster a few years ago. It was at least -8 outside! I do like them though. 153s and 150s also
Good video. Just wish Bachmann would make them DCC ready!
bachmann are actually in the process of re-tooling this model, you should get one of the new ones and do a comparison
you can see the eccses oil on the shasey
thanks for the info!

Will you answer me please? :(
the "beard" looks like the v for vendeta mask
I do! Maybe I will do a special on that one day haha
Great vid the only problem with a 158 is the couplings they can break very easily they are the same as a 170
I subscribed. I'm in the US, and I find this nice.
haha now that would be nice!
I like Bachmann class 220, 158 and 170 however none are DCC ready or fitted. It's so annoying.
I'll defintiely do that!
I believe the new bachmann class 158 will be coming out in regional railways livery, it will be great to compare it to the old 158 a
I love this train!!
true
I think this model predates the 'block of ice' packaging.
