      Honestly to me as a Laker fan , I felt iverson got to caught up in trying to defeat Tyron Lue in 2001 .... he had many pieces in 2001 ... and he was doing what a great player does... he was making his team better...he had the defensive player of the year and sixth man of the year on the same team....Speedy Claxton was nice off the bench , Eric snow was a good role player that year.... they had the team to beat the 01 lakers. That's why they gave them their first lost in the post season. But I feel after that AI got the big head and it was more about proving Lue couldn't guard him

  • @RobertDGordon
    @RobertDGordon 8 лет назад +105

    This is what I dislike about Skip. AI didn't play with another big offensive performer until he went to Denver and played with Melo. To take a terse "he's our Michael Jordan" statement and build your argument around it? If Iverson shared the ball more, they would have gotten their asses kicked. There was no other offensive threat on that 76er finals team. Yes, they were a great defensive team, but you gotta put the ball in the basket. Skip's Jordan bias is overbearing. Appreciate AI for who he is and the load he had to carry, instead of criticizing him for not being Michael Jordan...

    • @jydaflyest
      @jydaflyest 8 лет назад +8

      even MJ himself once pointed out some criticism of AI was unnecessary, especially with regards to his appearance, because it was a different era.

      @Brooklyn94269 8 лет назад +13

    • @alexcampbell2028
      @alexcampbell2028 8 лет назад +17

      rashawn thompson when jordan didn't make the playoffs he was put on the worst team in the east in a legendary easter conference. kobe played in a stacked west with no help. Lebron played in a weak east and when 1 team got good he couldn't handle them. A.I played on a team that was designed perfectly as best they could to play around him and is underrated for what they were.

How about when the Spurs at a point later in his career were in a perfect position to have him play a role and win a championship but he wanted to be the focus of a team? He could have done a lot of things better and it's no surprise players weren't overly eager to play with him.

    Nothing wrong with Iverson's game. Transport Iverson to the Bulls '98 team, adding a supporting cast of top selfless facilitators/system players like Pippen, Rodman and Harper..They would crush you in the paint, dominate you on the perimeter, and Iverson would be scoring 50 a night.

      You're talking like the Bulls 98 was great supporting cast. But all the players that you're talking about had no offensive talent besides Scottie Pippen. And Scottie Pippen started to decline in 1998. He even missed half of the season, yet Jordan still carried that team to the first seed in the league. So, I get the idea and I agree that Iverson was carrying his team but the Bulls 98 are not a necessarily a very good example. Plus, there were many more talented rosters overall than the Bulls in the 90's. Just look at the teams they faced in the finals or in the eastern conference finals. Yet, I agree Iverson was carrying his team like no other player in his era.

    The one thing that people can't deny is that Iverson accomplished great things despite not having (1) the ideal size like other great guards such as Westbrook, Johnson, Jordan, or Bryant, (2) a top-notch companion teammate that pretty every championship team needs to win a title in the NBA, and (3) how good he was at utilizing the "cross-over" to make sure he had space to make plays!

    For the early to mid parts of his years in Philly, he was the only realistic regular 20ppg+ option and the most skilled handler and passer on his team as well. Of course he's going to handle the ball a ton, make the most plays and shoot 50+% of his teams shots. Later in his career when he had Kyle Korver and Andre Iguodala, this didn't go away completely, but there was a huge improvement in his selflessness and also at the Nuggets with JR and Melo.

      Allen also played for the Nuggets, when they had Carmelo Anthony. What's your excuse for that? Or what about when the Nuggets traded him to the Pistons, who were only a few years removed from their last title upon his arrival, and still had most of their nucleus consisting of Rasheed Wallace, Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince. Three guys all capable of scoring. What's Iverson's excuse for that huh?
      The reality is that Iverson was never going to win a title with the way he played because he was a low percentage ball hogging volume shooter. And unlike Kobe and Michael, Iverson couldn't do jack shit without the ball because he needed the ball all the time to be effective on offense.

    I love Skip Bayless but the real ultimate solo act was Kobe Bryant, not Allen Iverson. He has 5 titles I know but give Iverson the teammates Kobe had in his career and give Kobe the teammates Iverson had in his career and the numbers are reversed. Allan Iverson HAD to score for his team to have success and that's a fact. Now, I'm the biggest Iverson fan but please, he's not "pound for pound" the best ever either (whatever the fuck that means), that would still be Jordan and by far. I know it sounds like a good formula to apply for Iverson because he was a small yet dominant player, but I don't buy it. However, I will say this : as a cultural basketball icon, he comes right after Jordan. Nobody affected the game of basketball itself to the extent of what Iverson did. In terms of his competitiveness and his heart, he was kind of like the Jordan of his era as well. Today, that would be Russel Westbrook (even though, Iverson is obviously far more skilled than Westbrook). And I will also say that in his prime, he was the best player in the league for a long time (outside of Shaq). He was at least in the conversation along with guys like Garnett, Duncan, T.Mac, Kobe guys like that. And also, he was better than Kobe.

    • @megadrive6573

      Federer 11
      Completely false statement. Kobe is the biggest ballhog of all time. Jordan was not a ballhog. Iverson was more like Jordan in the sense that he had to carry a team. When Iverson went to denver, he said : " This is Melo's team" and he didn't have to say it because he was still bigger and better than Melo. And he decided to become the second option behind Melo. Jordan went even further, he tries to be a 6th man for the wizards to help the team. Do you hear that? Jordan started from the bench, until his coach told him to stop it. And just like Iverson, he didn't have to do it because he was the best player on the team.
      Kobe is the greatest ballhog of all time. He was really selfish, he disrespected his teammates openly and publicly. He missed the most shots in nba history. He always wanted to be a ballhog and he didn't mind saying it loud. There's never been a ballhog like Kobe in nba history. Except maybe Lebron James.

    Well Iverson as a 6'0 SG still faced way better SG in his era then Jordan faced in his! And he still could average 30 a night just as Jordan! But you wont see Skip tell you that... And yeah Jordan played with the same bums as Iverson did in the starting of his career and where did he take them? Nowhere... Iverson atleast took his bum team to the finals against an amazing Shaq/Kobe team Michael never had to face either!
    I'm saying all of this not because I think Iverson is better then Michael but because people need to put Iverson into perspective about how amazing he actually was at 6'0 winning allot of scoring titles against perimiter scorers like Wade, Bryant, McGrady, Pierce, James, Anthony guys that could average 30 a night! Amazing!!

    • @Deenijel
      @Deenijel 8 лет назад +2

      +LycanVonWolf Are you seriously comparing the 97-98Lakers(With an High School Kobe averaging 15 ppg) that Jordan faced to the 2000-2001 Lakers Iverson faced where Kobe averaged 28,5ppg and Shaq averaged 28,7ppg and already had won a chip together and probably was at the best stage of their partnership? Jordan faced that Lakers team in 2003 and Kobe dropped 55 on Jordan(41 in the first half)! But yeah Jordan was old at that time and way out of his prime but he never had to face that type of caliber scorers in his prime because none of the SG he faced in his prime could average even close to 30 ppg like Kobe did in his sleep!

    2001 - AI's team had the MVP, DPOY, 6THMan and Coach of the Year. Definitely not a "bum team". Played with a stacked team in Denver with Carmelo. Couldn't win, was traded for Chauncey Billups, the Nuggets then made the conference finals while the Pistons got worse. The guy was more worried stats then winning. Still a great player nonetheless. That "pound for pound" shit is ridiculous also. Means literally nothing lol

      @raiders10003 8 лет назад +7

      How were the Nuggets a stacked team? Carmelo wasnt even a top 10 player, and Nene had cancer in 08. The Lakers, Spurs, Mavs, Suns, Rockets all had more talented teams. 32 year old Iverson was the teams best playmaker and scorer, Melo actually took more shots. Billups only won 4 more games w/ a healthy Nene yet lost to the same team 08 nuggets lost to. In 09 Manu and Tmac were also injured which is why they even made it to the WCF.
      The 01 team had great rebounders and defenders, but they were an offensively deficient team. If anything, Jordan was far more concerned with his stats than AI

He did take a lot of shots yet at the time he was told shoot when open because who else was gonna shoot>? When he had help an people open he always passed the ball but when you know that you are the only one who can hit a jumper then you must take the shot an he did.

    Shannon nailed it at 2:10 - "He HAD TO score, because if he didn't score, there wasn't going to be any scoring!"
    Derrick Rose and John Wall faced similar problems, and in Wall's case, he assumed the identity of the team's best defender, after Trevor Ariza's first stint with Washington. Until Beal improved, Wall had to be the team's best scorer and defender, while also running the show as the team's playmaker/floor general.

He was the most talented player on his team, they (teammates) should've adjusted to his playing style and adapted, period. To insinuate that he was a selfish player, isn't fair, he was an aggressive player with the style to match. Lead, follow, or get out the way! He came from a challenging background, overcome the odds & statistics and prevailed. He entered the league a young immature young man of course, had some growing pains, some setbacks, learned from them, humbled himself, and this is the guy we see today.
