my son does sambo. absolutly loves it and lives for it. not a lot of sambo yet here in australia but hopefully growing. At 17 years of age my boy hopes to go far in it. Proud dad so reckon he may.
@@Ullish1989no. SamBO has everything Judo has AND a lot of what Judo never had. A hundred years ago, a group of Russian military trainers traveled the Soviet Union and studied every martial art they could find among the 100+ ethnic groups native to the territories, and combined all the best techniques of each. One of these men already had a black belt in Judo which he earned from Jigoro Kano, so he added the Judo techniques to the mix. In the process, SamBO became Turbo Judo Plus on steroids with multiple expansion packs. Combat SamBO tournaments allow kicks, punches, knees, throws, slams, wrestling takedowns, armlocks, leglocks, chokes, etc. most SamBO techniques have been banned in Judo competitions. The Soviet Union has had combat SamBO "MMA-style" tournaments decades before the first UFC in the US, or the first Pancrase competition in Japan. Interesting fact: Japan had MMA tournaments centuries ago. They were called "Sumo" but eventually most Sumo techniques were banned from the sport and Sumo devolved from its original MMA roots into what it is today: a shoving contest between giant fat guys who always lose to average size guys in MMA matches and real fights. Judo seems to be going in the same direction, as most original Judo techniques have been banned from modern Judo competitions. Originally Judo was NHB grappling (no holds barred) where a win was scored only by a clean throw of the opponent onto his back, a submission, or knocking/choking the opponent unconscious. There were no "points" and no time limits.
Sambo needs to be expand & popularized more than Tae Kwon Do in the USA if anyone is looking for effective martial art for street self defense. And if there was one martial art that an Sambist should learn it be Eskrima/Kali/Arnis! Also there other martial arts that need more attention including some to be popularized again like Kyokushin, Savate, Pencak Silat, & Hapkido!
Sambo have proven itself in ufc ( Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam makhachev) that it is one of the most effective and versitile combat martial art! I also hope sambo is going to be more populair then BJJ because it is a complete package of fighting and you never have to do cross training where the other arts what you describe lack in.
Sambo has a better scoring system than Judo however suffers from a couple of its fatal flaws like not having a clear step out criteria and allowing belly flopping to get you out of trouble
Sambo's early development stemmed from the independent efforts of Vasili Oshchepkov and Viktor Spiridonov to integrate the techniques of Catch wrestling "free wrestling" in Russia (known in the West as catch-as-catch-can wrestling or simply catch wrestling), Spiridonov's style was softer and less brutal. Judo, Jujutsu, and other foreign martial arts into native Turkic wrestling styles, Armenian kokh, Romanian trântă, Mongolian khapsagay and Georgian chidaoba (ru:Чидаоба, ka:ქართული ჭიდაობა). Oschepkov taught judo to elite Red Army forces at the Central Red Army House.Vasili Oschepkov was one of the first foreigners to learn Judo in Japan and had earned his Nidan (second-degree black belt, out of then five) from judo's founder, Kano Jigoro. Spiridonov's background involved indigenous martial arts from various Soviet regions as well as an interest in Japanese jujutsu (though he never formally trained it).
Absolutely needs to be mentioned that it was a KGB-conducted operation targeting the identities of the nations they were taking (stealing) techniques from. After gathering information from the local community, mainly from elders, all those people somehow mysteriously were found dead. I should mention that we Georgians almost lost the knowledge, and thanks to the incident when a couple of Georgian enthusiasts accidentally discovered the information, otherwise it would have been lost forever. The guy who collected this information and brought it to light was also found dead

Sambo was not influenced by Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. It was from judo and Japanese jujutsu. Get your facts straight!
Yeah my understanding was as the Japanese art spread it was adopted by the Brazilians as Gracie Jiu Jitsu and the Russians as SAMBO
Yip, this guy's RONG BIG TIME.

after the reforms that took place in judo in 2013, sambo became more effective than judo
