Billy, you can hammer on hard steel shafts with a bronze tipped mallet only. The bronze is softer than the steel and will not mar the threads. The only concern I would have about the feathering props is that if the boat sits for long periods, then build-up can occur. Perhaps the grease will keep any build-up out of the pivots. Looks like you did a good job! I'd hire 'ya.
Guys keep in mind you two have the best channel of the type (you both are naturals), so keep the videos coming, it goes w the territory. I can see that the props are making a big difference.
A little tip if you need to tap a shaft with treads again, screw the nut back on flush with the end of the shaft. That way you won't mushroom the end of the shaft.
Just a suggestion for future work with tools.... whenever i'm doing work in the water, i tie a string or small rope onto my tools!!! That way WHEN i drop them they don't sink to the bottom!! ;) The props look great! you will definitely notice a difference!!
I'd be willing to bet that he has dropped things in the past... for those afraid of losing tools, put string or twine or thin rope around the tool (or object) so it won't get too far away from you should you lose your grip on it.
We were changing a prop on a friends boat, in deep water, he dropped the nut as soon as it came off the last thread. Thankfully there was an new nut with the new prop. It could've gone bad if not for that
I can't even screw things on a thread on dry land, let alone under water! Nice job and explanation. All I know about sailing is what I've learned from you guys in about three months. You explained it all so well that I was able to understand what and why you were doing what you did. Thanks, very interesting! I'm also impressed that you did it all just holding your breath!
A trick I have used to clean threads on axel shafts when I don’t have a die to clean the threads . I will use a hack saw Blade to cut reliefs in the nut . Then slowly thread it on and and off to clean the threads .
Everyone knows that you guy's are so natural at this sailing channel vlog thing because you have us glued to the screen and longing for more! Anticipating the commute to work as lifeguards! ,,,,,,/),,,,,,
Glad to see you go with a puller on the 2nd shaft. Its good to see you do your own repairs and replacements rather than call someone. Thanks for sharing
I was watching an update from Sailing into Freedom the other day. They were in Mexico and they had Tim with them from Jupiter Fl. Tim had on his Tula's Endless Summer t-shirt . My favorite vlogs have become a blended family:-))
Always put the castle nut back on shaft before using a hammer and or use a brass hammer to not mess up the threads! Just a rookie mistake! Lol live n learn! Love this channel!
Instead of the high priced zinc prop paint, take a look at Home Despot for Rustoleum Professional Cold Galvanizing spray paint. Much cheaper and same high zinc content. Lots of folks in my marina use it and so do I with very good results..
Nice video. A few tips. Leave the nut on flush with the end of the threads to protect the threads and shaft while hammering and keep a rope tied to the prop to keep it off the bottom of the sea. Also a elastic quick band tied to the tools will save ya money and hassle from having to buy new ones when they slip and go to the bottom with your prop. :) Always a lot of fun watching your videos.
Billy, if your ever in need of a machine shop while your cruising please let me know if your near South Carolina because I’m a retired machine shop owner. I still have the shop I just don’t do much work in it now. I still help folks out usually for the cost of materials. Let me know if I can ever help!
When ever you have on a threaded shaft, bolt or what ever with tread, keep the nut on the (in this occasion) the shaft, the nut flush whit the end of the shaft, and you will never damages the tread of the shaft anymore (it wil save you some time)🤗
just fyi a keyway cant fall out. it is the machined slot in the shaft and prop. the key can and does fall out. Key stock is cheap and very useful. buy a few pieces and keep in your spares. You can cut it to length and use it in many places.
Tula was a sailboat from a few years back, they just kept the same name for the channel. Their current catamaran is named Adrenaline (that was the name on the boat when they bought it).
Hats off to a guy that does his own work and doesn't get phased by difficulties do you have to grease these more often because they are movable and do you save fuel going at the same rpm vs 2blade?
Biggest thing with prop selection is make sure you can still get the engines rpm all the way to the rated rpm. If you are under recommended rpm's at full throttle then your over wheeled. Over wheeling will dramatically shorten engine life.
If the pitch is lower, that would mean that each rotation takes a smaller bite off the water. Essentially you're running in 3th gear instead of 4th gear. So probably slower at the same RPM though I don't know how much the 3rd blade would change that.
Got our boat. Leaving south Texas soon. Will be in the exuma December. Hurray! Any advice on phones, phone service or PLB? We will remain in Exumas til may
Great video. Not sure I understand putting the engine in reverse to lock the shaft. If the prop is feathered then it won’t turn until you start the engine.
I buy some cheap steel nuts at the hardware store so I can give the shaft a pretty sharp whack without worrying about damaging the the shaft or the real shaft nut. The only risk to this technique is potential damage to the transmission thrust bearings if you hit the shaft too hard.
I am curious what your opinion of the PYI propellers is now that you have many hours/miles on them? I have an Ericson 38 with a Michigan Wheel Sailer two blade that is nearing the end of its life. Congratulations on your engagement!
Cool video. Question! What does the manufacturer say about cleaning the props off when the boats been sitting at the mooring for weeks on end. Seems growth and such can get into the moving parts. Got our shirts which are totally awesome. Will send photos in a week.
Mr Billy, looks like ya might could be do for a new pair of them there "Prop Removal Gloves"! Looked like they had gone too battle a few to many times! Ha!
Awesome mate. Between your instagram feed and youtube, can see some wicked mods. And upgrades to the boat.

Well the new propellers seem to be functional. Good video
A little tip if you need to tap a shaft with treads again, screw the nut back on flush with the end of the shaft. That way you won't mushroom the end of the shaft.
Those feathering screws are very cool!
Thanks, Mark! We love them! They’ve been holding up great and we’ve been noticing an increase in speed
Just a suggestion for future work with tools.... whenever i'm doing work in the water, i tie a string or small rope onto my tools!!! That way WHEN i drop them they don't sink to the bottom!! ;) The props look great! you will definitely notice a difference!!
You two are great! Thanks!
Good job Billy..!! Nice Props..! Leave the nut on the end of the shaft so you don't mess up the threads with the hammer
Nice job Billy!
I would be soooo afraid of dropping something, Billy. Nice job not losing anything. :)
I'd be willing to bet that he has dropped things in the past... for those afraid of losing tools, put string or twine or thin rope around the tool (or object) so it won't get too far away from you should you lose your grip on it.
Mike Bolser
I was nervous watching Billy .
When I work on car and trucks , I always drop something.
We were changing a prop on a friends boat, in deep water, he dropped the nut as soon as it came off the last thread. Thankfully there was an new nut with the new prop. It could've gone bad if not for that
A shallow water job for sure .
I can't even screw things on a thread on dry land, let alone under water! Nice job and explanation. All I know about sailing is what I've learned from you guys in about three months. Just got my "Work like a Captain" T-Shirt.. Simply Cannot believe how soft and comfortable it is.
A trick I have used to clean threads on axel shafts when I don’t have a die to clean the threads . I will use a hack saw Blade to cut reliefs in the nut . Then slowly thread it on and and off to clean the threads .
Smooth sailing you to. Enjoy the summer. Great job replacing the props.
Great video again Billy the propellers look nice and great install ...thanks again for sharing
Totally worth it
Thank you for the video Billy and sierra , Take care.
WOW Doing this underwater! Very nice. Great job

Do your your thing billy. Good job with the boat. You guys have quite the life.
Nice job Billy, love the channel I got everyone I know hooked on watching your guys adventure. Keep up the good work.
Missed hearing from you guys. Hope you are enjoying your summer.
great video guys
I was watching an update from Sailing into Freedom the other day. They were in Mexico and they had Tim with them from Jupiter Fl. Tim had on his Tula's Endless Summer t-shirt . My favorite vlogs have become a blended family:-))
Should always leave the nut on the end of the shaft to avoid damaging the threads. Good job though, happy sailing 👍🏻
MaxProp is really great kit. Nice addition!
That was totally cool and interesting Billy . You definitely cover some stuff people probably don't think about much and make it look easy. Well done.
glad to see y'all back..
Miss ya!!
This makes great engineering sense.
Thread files are super useful for damaged threads. I never knew about them until a few years ago.
I like how you said to torque it to 60 and then cranked on it with an adjustable wrench!! Thanks for being like the rest of us lol!
Keep the Props for spares , you never know when you may need to change up :)
but have to have spare Key for Key way and a nut
Always put the castle nut back on shaft before using a hammer and or use a brass hammer to not mess up the threads! Just a rookie mistake! Lol live n learn! Love this channel!

Someone actually just told me that. I’m def going to give it a shot!

My knowledge of sailing is pretty much limited to your videos so i never knew these props were a thing. Very cool. Great video as always!
When ever you have on a threaded shaft, bolt or what ever with tread, keep the nut on the (in this occasion) the shaft, the nut flush whit the end of the shaft, and you will never damages the tread of the shaft anymore (it wil save you some time)🤗
Great video and great shirt!! We got ours last week and already got compliments at the marina!!
Loved my max prop on my prior boat. The power they have in reverse should be especially useful in a twin engine catamaran.
Excellent job! Always add a nut or two to a shaft you intend on pounding on with a hammer so as to not damage threads.
Good job Billy, I was waiting for you to drop the key, cheers
That's a pretty kewl setup looks like they will be a big help!!
Mighty Awesome...great tutorial. Blessings
just fyi a keyway cant fall out. it is the machined slot in the shaft and prop. the key can and does fall out. Key stock is cheap and very useful. buy a few pieces and keep in your spares. You can cut it to length and use it in many places.
A good tool to have is a magnet on a rope (a dead speaker works).
Very nice video! However the comments below are excellent! Very nice input from comments!
Aloha Love, Jen & Art S/V Eternal Bliss
Good explanation Captain Billy.
I am positive I would have dropped something. Nice job
Nice 'how to' video Capt Bill...you're looking pretty fit bro. Love the new T-shirts..look great. One of the best sailing channels for sure👍
Always improving is important.
Great video. I learned a lot. Never heard of these props before. Probably really helped you on your trip to LI. Safe travels.
Future plans for a long distance voyage??? Love to see you take Tula through Panama Canal or over to Europe!
Tula was a sailboat from a few years back, they just kept the same name for the channel. Their current catamaran is named Adrenaline (that was the name on the boat when they bought it).
Future plans for a long distance voyage??? Love to see you take Adrenaline through Panama Canal or over to Europe! :P
Smart move
Cool idea and seems to work well! Great video.
Love you guys
Love y’all were y’all at,
Great Technology!
Wow! that's cool.
Not enough Sierra and Jetty this time! MORE! MORE! MORE!
Hahaha, I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking that.
Cool video. Feather the props like a B-24 in flight with the engine out.
More ordinary day in the lives of both of you, your to good for a how to show.
Awesome, thanks!
Hi Billy great video, but you should always leave the nut on the shaft (to protect the thread) before hitting with a hammer!
He did it without air supply, good job
Whenever I have worked underwater or up the rig always have a lanyard attached to your tools, especially in murky water & silty bottom.
They dont credit you but you both plus Jetty are the best you tube boating channel ever
Hats off to a guy that does his own work and doesn't get phased by difficulties do you have to grease these more often because they are movable and do you save fuel going at the same rpm vs 2blade?
Nice
Score! You got them. That should improve performance.
Always nice to see "how to" videos. Thanks! Well.. you know what I mean ;)
cool video cool idea always very interesting
Biggest thing with prop selection is make sure you can still get the engines rpm all the way to the rated rpm. If you are under recommended rpm's at full throttle then your over wheeled. Over wheeling will dramatically shorten engine life.
Impressive, in the next video let’s see Billy change a thru-hull fitting underwater in snorkel gear.
Neat, thanks for this video, very informative
There is a tool made for doing this. It's called a Prop puller. You can rent them. Would have saved a whole lot of headache.
That was very interesting. I was not familiar with featherjng props.
If the pitch is lower, that would mean that each rotation takes a smaller bite off the water.
Essentially you're running in 3th gear instead of 4th gear.
So probably slower at the same RPM though I don't know how much the 3rd blade would change that.
Looks like Tula's endless summer has come to an end. :-(
Make matching lamps out of old prop's
Put a sacrificial bolt over the shaft before hitting so you don't mar the threads. Perfectly fine to do otherwise.
Got our boat. Leaving south Texas soon. Will be in the exuma December. Hurray!
Any advice on phones, phone service or PLB? We will remain in Exumas til may
Cool props. Do y’all notice an appreciable difference in sailing performance? AJ
spinn the props
Hey miss you guys. RUclips no longer seems to show your feed as a recommended like they use to.
Great video. Not sure I understand putting the engine in reverse to lock the shaft. If the prop is feathered then it won’t turn until you start the engine.
The prop doesn’t feather until you lock the shaft.
Tula's Endless Summer OK, I think with ours we stop the engine while in ahead and it feathers - the shaft doesn't turn after that.
oh wow you should have left the nut at the end of the shaft and tapped the nut so you dont wreck the threads. thats how i take my race props off
I buy some cheap steel nuts at the hardware store so I can give the shaft a pretty sharp whack without worrying about damaging the the shaft or the real shaft nut. The only risk to this technique is potential damage to the transmission thrust bearings if you hit the shaft too hard.
+Todd Dunn When you try to swing a hammer in the water, you will be surprised at how slow the hammer goes. Unlikely to damage the thrust bearing.
Some of us actually pull props when the boat is out of the water.
brass hammer bro
I am curious what your opinion of the PYI propellers is now that you have many hours/miles on them? I have an Ericson 38 with a Michigan Wheel Sailer two blade that is nearing the end of its life. Congratulations on your engagement!
Billy do you have crabs.🦀🦀🦀lol....there is one on the back of your head at 5:55 ..Them props look there doing there job.....T.Gunz.........
That’s a bee!!
Sorry didn’t have my contacts in.🙂
Billy hit me up about the whaler
Cool video. Question! What does the manufacturer say about cleaning the props off when the boats been sitting at the mooring for weeks on end. Seems growth and such can get into the moving parts. Got our shirts which are totally awesome. Will send photos in a week.
You are not getting close to 60 pounds of Torque with that crescent wrench..
Mr Billy, looks like ya might could be do for a new pair of them there "Prop Removal Gloves"!
Looked like they had gone too battle a few to many times! Ha!
Haha they are actually my spearfishing gloves of 10 years now. Yeah, def time for some new ones...
Also as Isidor Fist said.... After a few taps on the nut..spin it in a tad or back it off so you're not stressing the same threads. PEACE OUT! Ü
2:30 Hi Sierra :-)
I always thought a feathering prop meant that it totally folded back and closed itself up so when sailing!
That would be a folding prop
Tula's Endless Summer Ok, thanks for clearing that up.
