Total crime it closed. They should definitely take it on the road. Only issue with the show: each number deserved some context. That was a criticism of the original run (which I saw and it was fabulous!). For the newbies, they need some context to what Fosse was about. Might have made a difference.
I saw this remarkable production twice on Broadway. Its excellence was undeniable. Returning for a third viewing less than a year later, I accompanied friends in town to the Music Box, only to be met with disbelief. The theater was nearly deserted, with no performance in sight. My incredulity does not stem from the closure of a Broadway show per se, but rather from the supposed reason behind it. While many productions, both on and off Broadway, persist for years despite growing stale, this particular show succumbed to closure due to "poor reviews." Such a fate seems utterly preposterous and down right ridiculous. One can't help but imagine that Fosse himself would have commended its artistic merit. "Needed context"? Needed nothing. It was FLAWLESS. Sounds more like a bunch of tired haters comparing this show to something they maybe saw decades ago. Snap out of it folks. Directors will change things up a bit or a lot. ..It had minor kinks, ill give you that.
Besides the onstage drummer here, where were the rest of the orchestra for this revival? This number is incredible, this production deserved a longer run of least a year at minimum.
I was wondering the same thing. At first I thought the orchestra was in the scaffolding on the sides of the stage because I saw movement up high. After watching the entire video, I realized I was seeing the lights reflecting off the scaffolding.
@@nkyjenn I've seen videos of this production, and even though I know they're not in the traditional orchestra pit, they're somewhere... behind the set. I'm 100% unsure of exactly where, because we only see the drummer here for 'Sing Sing Sing', one of Benny Goodman's most iconic pieces.
I totally agree, i find it very annoying. I also think the tempo is a little too slow and does not drive the music, story, or dancers with enough vibrancy or urgency.
Hello, do you mean who was the original choreographer, as in Bob Fosse? Or are you asking who is the repetiteur, as in who remounted the choreography? I don't know who's responsible for THIS version but here's a clip of the original dancers, straight from working under Fosse in the 70's: ruclips.net/video/6EBHQGLWp0Y/видео.html. It also contains a 1999 version.
I saw the original in 1978. Not at all surprising that this revival version closed. I cringed at how sloppy it was. But thanks very much for posting it.
I wouldn't say sloppy. I felt it was missing rawness. Everyone was so technical to the point that the personalities seemed staged. The staging wasn't bad as much as it was trying to be up-to-date and don't get me started on the costumes
I kinda agree. The sharpness of movement that Fosse was known for seems to be missing. The original (in 1978) was exciting and with plenty of weird hands and humour. Costumes were colorful and classy. I'm sure this version deserved better ratings, but I would like to see a full 'revival'
It seems like this is very commercial dancers dancing style, the original theatrical fosse’s style is absolutely missing. These dancers are great but I agree ,it’s not there anymore .
No disrespect to the actors In the show, but this shouldn’t have been on broadway for an open ended run. It was never going to sell enough tickets. Should’ve been a limited run!
What a misstep! Sad messy copying of Fosse. NO wonder the shoe closed early. Fosse would be rolling in his grave if he had the misfortune of hearing and seeing this production.
The hooting and hollering during sung and/or danced numbers is a horrible byproduct of reality television. It really takes you out of a live performance, particularly when a story is being told. You can't concentrate and when there are lyrics you can't hear them, subtlety and emotion gets lost and a talented performer can't be heard completing a sustained note. Having ranted about that, let's discuss this revival. It looks so Vegas glitzy that the dancers are list in the, yes, razzle dazzle. Unfortunately, this is not the razzle dazzle referred to in that song, this is schlock. There are obviously many talented hard working dancers onstage, but they are done a disservice by their director-choreographer. I saw the original and first national tour and this is weak tea. I'll leave it at that.
thanks. one of the limitations with choreography is that the precision of the choreographer does not carry to acolytes. fosse would have never let this be seen before an audience. it lacks the skill and precision that differentiates the master from his imitators.
This is a poorly executed piece compared to the original Broadway and West End productions. And as for the crass whooping. Just keep the applause to the end. Imagine this audience at the Metropolitan Opera; they’d be cheering in the middle of an aria.
I thought this was a high school production because of the whooping and lack of sharpness and attitude. Even with the lack of polish, I still enjoyed the show
This may have been Fosse steps that someone remembered but this was horrible. Not tight or sharp the way he would have insisted. And sloppy energy. Look up Sing sing sing with Sandahl Bergman and Ann Reinking in it if you want to see this done right.
I saw the original in LA. Loved every minute of it
This show deserved a longer run. This number is amazing and they make it look so easy.
It's so unfair what happened to it!
Total crime it closed. They should definitely take it on the road. Only issue with the show: each number deserved some context. That was a criticism of the original run (which I saw and it was fabulous!). For the newbies, they need some context to what Fosse was about. Might have made a difference.
I love this so much
Saw them live a couple of weeks ago, One of the best shows ever!! So sad they had to close. Hope they go on the road so others can enjoy them.

I knew I should have seen this in San Diego.
I agree. It was a sloppy remount without meticulous oversight.
Thank you so much for this. Do you have any more?
The moving backdrop distracts from the wonderful dancers.
I totally agree, i find it very annoying. I also think the tempo is a little too slow and does not drive the music, story, or dancers with enough vibrancy or urgency.
do you happen to have the full sing sing sing number?
Amazing! I will put this number in one of my future movies. Difficult routine. Who's is the Choreographer and what company is this?....Director CMack

And it's sooooosloooow.
This video is a mess. Fosse would've never let this on stage.
Bob Fosse original choreography is being diluted and minimized by repetition, inferior dancing, and staging.
No disrespect to the actors In the show, but this shouldn’t have been on broadway for an open ended run. It was never going to sell enough tickets. Should’ve been a limited run!
It was a limited run. It still didnt.
Absolutely agree as I don't remember seeing any limited run in the marketing. What little marketing there was 😢
So totally sloppy sadly.
It was horrible. Left at intermission. 1:49
Now I know why it closed...it was a major disappointment after seeing the original show.
Totally agree

I saw the original and this has no sizzle at all. The costumes are awful And that audience? Where do they think they are?
thanks. one of the limitations with choreography is that the precision of the choreographer does not carry to acolytes. fosse would have never let this be seen before an audience. it lacks the skill and precision that differentiates the master from his imitators.

ah, those extensions were breath-taking.
All the hooting and hollering during the number are ridiculous! And will destroy Broadway
Don't know what this junk is but it ain't Fosse.
This show was one of the biggest disappointments in my 42 years of Broadway theater going.
