The work of the orchestra is simply the most Wagnerian I’ve ever heard. Norman is simply at her best here. Both created a almost perfect Liebestod. I never heard it in a better way.
Perfect climax at the end. The voice vanish as she closes her eyes. Last crescendo of the orchestre. Long. Longer. And silence. When Karajan releases his shoulder. Thinking. “We’ve done it.” One year later he died. After this she and he can rest in peace.
Karajan, the alleged Nazi, the Man of the Reich (some stupid critics still nowadays say), was the first one to bring to Vienna, at the Staatsoper, a black singer, the great Leontyne Price. Here he brought to Salzburg another splendid and unique black voice to close once and for all the Tristan/Liebestod Chapter with what is no doubt one of His four/five totally unreachable intepretations. This is a Moment not only of Pure Music of the Spheres but also of immense Humanity. It is right that the (albeit limited in number) cameras are all on Karajan in the last bars of the piece: the depht of the Spirit of this Man is portraied, finally, without any artifice, any trick or photographic mannerism. This was Karajan: and he made me a better Human being.
Ms. Norman's characteristic slower singing tempo (due to her astounding vocal ability) adds some remarkable dramatic beauty and an exquisite mellowness that perfectly enacts Wagner's romanticism. This rendition is the most different from all, and Karajan electrifies the orchestra with a superb direction. A clash of titans elevating Wagner's aesthetics to a glorious performance.
A captivating voice of conviction. It coveys an overwhelming flood of accomplishments. It goes beyond emotions. It brings you in space to dream. Thank you Ms Norman for music that transcends. Good night.
This performance is no better than Jessye in New York with Zubin Mehta. I know there is a great cult for Karajan, the maestro of Salzburg Festival. But Jessye is always magnificent whoever conducts. I am for the Jessye Norman 'cult' !!!
Agreed. I heard Miss Norman sang this in London. I can still hear it in my head after almost 30 years, I can still hear and feel the applause afterward but I cannot remember the conductor.
Whatever you might think of the old Nazi, Karajan recognized genius and had no choice but to kiss Jessey's hands. That was a historic moment in human progress toward a fairer world.
Well, he was also partly responsible for Leontyne Price's European initial breakthrough .. so perhaps he had come around. That said, Wagner still was Hitler's favourite so perhaps you need to stop listening to him ... boycott it all if you are going to be a man of principal
@@DAS1962 If that comment was in response to mine then you missed the point since it has no logical connection to what I said. On a minor point: I think you meant “principle” and not “principal”

Good god....what a loss to us all.😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Safe journeys Ms. Norman, another great from my youth lost too early...

I totally agree
Norman was also a wonderful Sieglinde.
Аnd Kathleen Battle too. Afro-American singers made way to their homeland stages only after they succeeded at Germany, thanks to Karajan
A glorious performance. Goodbye, Ms. Norman. And thank you.

Beyond sublime. R.I.P Diva suprema

Her voice is so velvety, round, and powerful. The first time I heard her sing, she blew my hair back.
Thank you Karajan for the genius set up! Thank you Wagner for the music of heaven...
Art at its highest.
Tears every time again
When you see the video of the rehearsal, Karajan is saying "I believe in you", this is what my orchestra is going to do, and I trust you
Nunca dejo de emocionarme❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm crying again..it happens every time!
A truly magical performance. It doesn't get any better than that.
Brilliant. Glorious. Magnificent. Brava Superb Jessye!
What a painful loss. She was larger than life.
to see him smile at the 7.00 minute marks...he knows they have created something unmatchable!
Voz divina, acalenta o sono dos anjos!Jessye Norman for ever!!!!
"Караян всегда выстилал для певца волшебный ковер" (Джесси Норман).
Бессмертная!
God bless him.
Divino! 🌹
Will be sorely missed.....
This performance is just breathtaking.
Timeless.
Sublime !!
No words!
The most beautiful!
Inimitably!!!

Sometimes she got messy with Mazur! But Mehta: whenever he conducts I reach for my medication. Poor Ms Norman having to sing for him.

To the heights!
başka hiçbir hazla kıyaslanamaz... ne mutlu ki bu hazzı tadabilecek bir kulak, bir beyin ve biraz gözyaşına sahibiz...
Thanks to Karajan either!

: ((((((((((((((((((((((((( just divine.....
why the poor video quality? HK would not be impressed, tough he might say, what do you expect for free?
Um, this is before HD.
after that performance Karajan said he had just worked with the greatest liar he ever met.
william shakespeare Who is the liar? Norman?
What do you mean? This must simply be undignified rumor meant to damage his image.
william shakespeare yes, he had really a lot of work with them...
Nonsense.
Juan Pedro Mariano It is because she was able to prove him that she wasn't Jessye Norman, but Isolde
有3個說「不讚」,大概是聾子
