A true sailor! You're the *ONLY* guy on RUclips that doesn't use a motor to get to the haul-out crane. I love every single one of your videos. Thank you for posting these. I'm in awe of your skill.
"...apart from the heat and the pestilence..." Haha classically delivered line by Kevin, and he sails on because he just can't help himself for his love of sailing. I watch and learn something from each of your videos, great stuff, thanks man!
Love the genuine sailing element. Make sure you show the maintenance works you are doing when lifted out, it's adds to reality of it all. Love your boat (not sure I could have the patience for no engine of some sort though!!). Regards from Ireland.
Wow..admirable anchoring. I used to take my boat under sail into harbor. Sometimes 2 approaches depending on wind. 2 hp motor just 'in case.' I think in the US it's forbidden to go under sail into dock? The way youbdocked was high5
Loved the authenticity of the morning start. You really are a sailor man, doing all these manoeuvres singlehanded! About the noise from the autofocus: when you’re using a wide angle, like in the docking, I reckon you can just turn autofocus off. It’s a good device to find focus quick, but when recording I don’t use it at all (or very seldom). It helps in the editing process to have it clean. And the sound recorder was working fine, clean of wind, and is no big deal if in the frame. Thnx m8 for a good vid!
Well, you certainly put those of us like me, who use our engines too much, to shame. I shall definitely try and start using the sail more coming into anchorages. Mind you, I will probably still have the engine ticking over just in case. Text book docking manoeuvre - that was a pleasure to watch.
I would not discourage having the engine ticking over if you feel uncertain of your skills. On other hand, a few cheap thrills here and there adds spice to life ...
Love watching you anchor, dock etc without an engine. I wouldn't trust myself in a packed marina. Especially in this part of the world where the wind is always blowing strong! Inspiring as always Kevin. Thanks.
Excellent video amazing sailing skills. You make me nervous everytime you do this like that without an engine. I enjoy and yes learn a lot from your videos. Keep showing the work done while on the hard. Thank you cheers be safe.😎
Thanks for the great videos. I've watched them all and learned a trick or two. I'd be interested in seeing your boat out of the water and work that you do on her, especially related to the rigging and sails, if any is required.
Mate.... thank you for this past season I've learned a lot from your experiences you are truly a sailor no question about it. If you are ever up at Solomons Island stop in at Calvert Marina. Would love to buy you a beer! Larry Sv. Ourkayak
So we keep our boat in Jackson creek (of course pulled her out in preparation of the possible hurricane), but you likely sailed right passed us! Hopefully we will run into you again!!
Hello Kevin. Great Season. Thanks. We are thinking of going to the sailboat show in Annapolis. we come from Philadelphia. Do you work anywhere near there/
I generally avoid boat shows (but don't let that discourage you, the Annapolis boat show is famous!). I'll be here at the Deltaville Boatyard for the next few weeks working on the boat.
I am 63. Other than working on tunaboats at 18-19, I haven't been on boats all this time. We want to move to Panama on the Pacific side, and at our age we'll be looking for a boat that's easy to board and easy to bring supplies without the danger of breaking a leg.
Kevin, A little explanations please. When you were sailing towards your destination the dingy was on the foredeck. When you were making your way into the anchorage the dingy wasn't on the foredeck. When you were making your way to the dock, the dingy was back on the foredeck again. Why didn't you just leave it there? And a suggestion for a future epesode. How about an explanation of how you set a given course to a destination, set your sails to the wind and set the self steering to maintain the course and wind direction on the sails. Kind of a tutoral on setting and maintaining a course with the self steering vane.
That's because I hauled out several days after I arrived in Deltaville and needed the dink to get ashore in the meantime. I put it back up on the foredeck just before I hauled.
As your next birthday approaches do yourself a favor and call Mack Sails (in Miami, I believe) and order a Light No. 1 Genoa for your boat. And a topsail, if your rig is proportioned for it. I'm tired of seein' you stumble about in calms under main alone. It hurts me. Bad. In light air, sail area is the name of the game. (I'm assuming your bottom is clean.) So let's see a cloud of canvas aloft and some snap in our light-air drill!
Man your looking good bro! In the beginning of this video with the low light you look like a badass fit sailor! Currently hurricane Florence is slamming into the Carolinas and I have my boat anchored out in the river away from my Marina and hopes that it will make it: 9-13-18
@@howtosailoceans1423 me too! She's anchored just south out the bridge by port Royal landing marina in Beaufort SC. If the storm stays north everything should be good. Thanks for the support and keep these videos going. I'm going to give you a shout out on my Snapchat for all of my follower to check you out. You deserve more views for this type of content!!👍👍👍
Kevin, If you get a chance while she is on the hard could you post some details of the self steering. I have a Southern Cross 31 (#86) and would like to replicate your system. Thanks, Dave on Crosswinds, bound for the Bahamas and points south this December. St Marys Ga.
Actually I've been having problems with my clip on mic, so some of it was the Zoom recorder, some of it just the built in mics on the cameras (EOS 60D and Olympus TG-3).
Generally no, since the staysail or jib gives the boat quite a bit of power, and when you're anchoring generally you want to power down and slow down. Occasionally I've sailed off anchor or a mooring with the staysail up so I could get off on the preferred tack by backing it, and power up fast, typically in lighter conditions.
I would think, as long as it is luffing, having it up, in some boats anyway, might help with steering in an unusual or unexpected circumstance where you'd have to change your location at the last minute and need it.. I've always caught moorings with both sails up (using no engine, of course). I just make sure they are luffing and the boat slows down many boat lengths before we approach the mooring. I agree, leaving the mooring really helps to have a jib up to make sure you get headed in the direction you want.
I built it myself, and soon it will all be explained on my website, which I keep procrastinating but have set a Nov. 1 deadline for to go live .. thanks for tuning in.
I was surprised to see how much my coffee maker draws on the inverter. After that I got a French press, just a pain to clean. Oh I found a way to get rid of the 60hz hum while playing guitar. I'm using a used 30$ line 6 pod as an amp and it has a built in noise gate. Works great to stop the 60hz
Hey, thanks! My Zoom effects pedal is nearing the end, salt air is killing the switches, the Line 6 pod might be a good replacement. Looks like it can run off USB, so you can use DC power if the noisegate doesn't get all of the 60 hz.
Now there would be irony... the fishing boat kills the Nutshell... forced you to buy a larger dinghy that obstructs your view forward and then you end up ramming said fishing boat! Good miss... safe travels!
Please ask Santa for a new modest vlog camera for Christmas, look into the canon sx40, they can be found on used sites for great deals, 60x optical zoom and no noisy gear motors.
Got a few other items on Santa's list before it. That's my Olympus TG-3 waterproof camera, which is also fogging up, so it will get replaced at some point, thanks for the suggestion.

Nice and smooth, no problems. Sure you can dock without an engine.

Great fireworks!
Just beautiful boat handling Kevin. Respect.
Good to see you back online, Patrick, thanks for stopping by.
Kevin, that was maybe the finest dock making I've ever seen! An I'm 70 this year mate!
Well happy birthday when it comes! And 70 is the new 50 ...
Love these videos, thanks for making & sharing.
Good luck with the storm!! Great video, as usual! Thanks!
I always have so much respect for sailers like u. No engine.....my hats off to ya.
Great video. Love the sense of calm when you are sculling into a still and deserted boatyard.

Thanks Miq, I had not yet figured out what that clicking noise was! OK, turn off autofocus for general landscape shots, will try that ..
Really really enjoy your videos! Keep them coming!
Great season!! I watched them all..looking forward to next season! Keep your head down while Florence is moving through!⛵⚓🍺
you make it look so easy. I am stressed just watching. ha

Love watching you anchor, dock etc without an engine. I wouldn't trust myself in a packed marina. Especially in this part of the world where the wind is always blowing strong! Inspiring as always Kevin. Thanks.
Very nicely done and a fitting end to a very fine season. Thanks for the ride!

Great sailing video skipper. That is some awesome boat handling under sail. Best of luck to you with the the hurricane.
Ah, it has been too long since I've sailed in the Chesapeake! Great video, Kevin!
Nicely done.

Hi Larry, I visited Solomons on the way north, maybe catch you next summer ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 sounds good...welcome a time. Have a great winter.
Definitely an art and certainly requires a great deal of patience. I tend to balk and fire up the engine. Working on that.
Where are you holing-up for Florence? I'm on the other side of Deltaville.
Deltaville boatyard, I hauled out last week.
So we keep our boat in Jackson creek (of course pulled her out in preparation of the possible hurricane), but you likely sailed right passed us! Hopefully we will run into you again!!
Will be here for another 2-3 weeks

Enjoyed the video as usual...hope you are well hunkered down over the weekend! Long haulout or shorty, then next stop??
We didn't get much from Florence up here, thankfully. Will be hauled out for another three weeks or so.

My website will be up soon where I have a section on building the windvane. Fair winds mate..
Where do you get your weather info
Like the Mic! What brand and model?
Actually I've been having problems with my clip on mic, so some of it was the Zoom recorder, some of it just the built in mics on the cameras (EOS 60D and Olympus TG-3).

Interesting, 'different ships, different long splices' as the saying went ...
Which self steering are you using.thanks
I built it myself, and soon it will all be explained on my website, which I keep procrastinating but have set a Nov. 1 deadline for to go live .. thanks for tuning in.
Thanks for the episode Kevin. What DVR is that? Are you using an external mic?
Normally I use a clip on mic but it's on the fritz, so I was just speaking into the Zoom audio recorder. New clip on mic has been ordered.
Do you use a electric coffee maker or a french press or a prec style coffee maker?
Electric grinder and a one cup gold mesh filter (pour boiling water in it for drip coffee).
I was surprised to see how much my coffee maker draws on the inverter. After that I got a French press, just a pain to clean.

Looks like you can get any usb audio interface and line 6 pod farm (free software) I'll look to see which one draws the least power
Now there would be irony... the fishing boat kills the Nutshell... forced you to buy a larger dinghy that obstructs your view forward and then you end up ramming said fishing boat! Good miss... safe travels!
Yes, the new dinghy does obstruct my view a bit, but still that's no excuse for a collision. Uggh, still kicking myself.
Getting run down by a sailboat with no engine is not the sort of thing a fisherman EVER lives down. 8^)
Ha!
“Apart from the heat and the pestilence... all is well on board.” Heh.
This summer has been hot as hell ...
Hope the storm was/is a big nothing for you!
A little wind, a little rain so far ..
And helene has turned north but there is one turnimg south atlantic is not a place to be unless your in the bar of the QM2
The bar of the Allure of the Seas would be better, displ: 225,282 tons.
