Washington Today (7-1-24): Supreme Court rules former President Trump has some immunity

  • The Supreme Court rules 6-3 that former presidents have immunity from prosecution for official, but not unofficial, actions.
    The High Court said that lower courts must now decide which category former President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, for which he has been charged, fall into.

    Former Trump White House senior adviser Steve Bannon reports to a federal prison in Connecticut to begin serving a four-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress for not responding to a subpoena from the January 6 committee for testimony and records. He told reporters and supporters before going in that he is "proud to go to prison… if this is what it takes to stand up to tyranny" and called himself a "political prisoner".
    President Joe Biden returns to the White House from Camp David tonight, following weekend meetings in which he reportedly discussed the future of his reelection campaign after last week's debate performance against former President Trump. We will hear from Ipsos pollster Clifford Young on who the public thinks won the debate and their views of each candidate mental fitness.
    Acting Labor Sec Julie Su talks about the changes in overtime rules that the Biden Administration says will make one million more workers eligible for overtime.
    Secretary of State Antony Blinken is asked what the success of the right-wing National Rally party in France may mean for U.S.-European relations and the future of the NATO military alliance.
    Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia is asked about Donald Trump's promise to end the war between Russia and Ukraine in a day.
