the sounds of work being done are far better than one maddening audio loop for 20 minutes. cool project but it felt like customer service had me on hold the entire time.
If I played chess more, I'd totally want one. One minor improvement though, consider putting a strip of diffusing paper over the LEDs to make it look like a glow instead of intense spots of light underneath the board.
No need to use diffusing paper. A light sanding on the underside with a coarser grit sandpaper to knock off the high-gloss shine and opacity would do the job just fine.
@@JensWoodworkingThings on both sides they are. Remember Kings face each other. They are also gentlemen and give the queen her colored square. In other words black queen on black square, white queen on white square.

Amazing project. Kind of want to do it for my father. 1. Definitely consider using diffusion paper or spray to cut the led spots. 2. Maybe make or have a storage battery so it can work on the go that has an adapter inside for both plug and play or on the go. 3. Consider using glass/epoxy or Glass/epoxy/wood pieces so the color travels to the pieces. Specifically the black pieces.
Or just have a normal chess? Why make it colourful and glowing? Especially if it is for your dad. I would understand if it is a child that wants glowing chess board or something like that. But adult man.. Yeah..
The interesting thing is that in the light the white fields are wooden and the black fields are made of glass, but are not backlit - that’s why they are black. And in the dark they change places and from wood they become black and transparent ones become white, or multi-colored :)))
That looks amazing! I love the lights underneath. (a tip for the videos: don't use annoying music and certainly don't use it for almost 22 minutes, haha, it drove me crazy!)
😠 and different tunes - not one repeatedly looped for the whole video or no music, the sound of you working, possibly with a pleasant background sound.
Came here to say the same, glad someone beat me to it. Honestly the sound of a craftsman doing his work is very soothing, even ASMR like. That'd make the video infinitely more watchable. As it is, I had to skip ahead to the finished product because the music was so annoying.
I would definitely try some type of diffuser for the lights like others have said. One other thing I would change is to have the lights cover the entire bottom instead of just the edge. It looks great in the dark, but with the lights on (how I assume you’ll usually play), the middle is pretty dark.

It is a cool idea. A few ideas for variants. Have a shined metal plate on the bottom instead of the clear plexi, instead move the plexi up above the LEDs so that the pieces can't damage them. Alt construction ideas. Make bars of the epoxy the same size as the square stock. You could glue up sets of 2x2 and then the production speed could be faster and more cost effective.
Nice idea. You might want to shield the LED light with a partial cover and place a reflective material in the bottom of the case. This will improve light distribution amongst the resin cubes and keep you from seeing the LEDs from above. Nice first project though. Cheers.
Personally, I like the acrylic for the bottom. It allows the LED's to produce a glow around the bottom of the board. Putting felt and/or a reflective material would cancel the LED glow which I think would be a shame. But to each his own. The pieces rattling around is a good point. But I would hate to close off the light glow.

It would be awesome if you could mold the black pieces with the same epoxy as the black board squares. You could probably do that by creating the white pieces of wood then using them to make a mold for the black pieces.
Really beautiful and unique,,,great work,, but I think glass or resin chess pieces as the glass or resin would reflect the lighting, would love to see how that would look too!.♟
This is a great project - right in my "level" of wood working. I'm gonna bookmark it for my chessboard project later this year - as soon as I get the pieces. Two suggestions: 1) The chess pieces rattling around on the bottom are going to eventually scratch that acrylic. Maybe line it with a small layer of felt instead? 2) Did you add any "stops" on the opposite side of the hinges? I noticed you were very careful when you closed the top, but some kid or someone not familiar with it might just let it drop. Stops (maybe also felt lined) would help support it better.
I was also going to comment on the fact that there was no stops to support the other side of the board. If I had the skill set and was making this, I would have also carved a small grove on the side of the board so that it is easier to grip when opening.
I thought the same thing about the acrylic, but if you do that then you lose the LED glow underneath the board. Lining it with vellum or parchment instead of felt would probably get the best of both worlds.

sei un grande, bellissimo lavoro realizzato soprattutto grande merito perche fatto senza grandi strumenti nè laboratorio super attrezzato ma dentro casa e questo secondo me è un gran merito e stimolo per altri
The only problem with using clear epoxy is over time it turns cloudy and a horrible shade of yellow and goes rubbery and looses its bond if it’s bonded to a substrate so it’s better to use a dye pigment to change its colour which stops it from turning yellow but won’t stop the cloudiness over time. Even all UV resistant epoxy does this eventually. I hope this helps someone..
This is why I only use the Liquid Glass epoxy, never had any yellowing even months-years after. I'm sure it will a little bit and maybe it has but it's not noticeable in anything I've done. I've used others that have yellowed after a couple weeks that claim to be UV resistant.
@@joshuaholden4303 I’ve tried about 15 that claim they are either UV resistant or not effected by UV at all it was only when I spoke to a chemist that I found out that all epoxy’s use phenolics or some form of a phenolic catalyst and I mean all of them, anyway she said it’s not just UV it’s most of them like UVA UVB UVC that break the polymers in the epoxy resin down. This photochemical reaction is responsible for more than just turning the epoxy resin yellowish because you can add UVA protection but to get 100% UV protection you need to give it shades like sunglasses this means adding pigments. It’s only a matter of time before it yellows or goes cloudy might take months or a year but it will happen regardless of a manufactures claims. There are better alternatives out there though especially for casting but epoxy with out dye is a no go.
