- A reef tank crash, hobbyists' worst nightmare. Well, unfortunately my 40 gallon shallow reef tank experienced a minor crash a few weeks ago.
We talk about the future of the fish room and my low tech reef tanks and we check out which corals survived. Some didn't make it! :(
A few topics we cover in this video are:
- Reef tank crash
- Problems with an aquarium
- Reef tank setup ideas

A new 3m tank would be awesome! A fresh start on a new big project could be the new begining you need. Learning from the mistakes youve made over the last 3 years and putting that knowledge into a new tank would be great to watch.
Exactly! It would be a similar system, low tech.. no sump, skimmer, etc. We’ll see! ;)
@@DannysAquariums We all love the systems you have now so using the same technique but with all you've learnt over the past aquariums would be really interesting. Im curious to see how the low tech system works with larger tanks.
3 meter tank starting with mangroves on one end and expanding into a beautiful reef would look amazing.
I would xheck on that 40 gallon...2 things.....1. i would get rid of that palythoa grandis (that could be poisonong your tank) 2. Check to see if any have any rusting magnets or exposed metal in the tank. Those are the 2 resoms im thinking why the tank is reacting rhe way it is. Coral warfare wont cause a tank crash..or other corala far from the warfare to react that way. Leathers do engage in chemical warfare...but carbon shoudl more than clear that up. I believe the palythoa are the issue. I would remove them all. The smaller tank..i would go with white samd. Black samd often has iron in it...and can cause issues in a reef tank. I woudl avoid it. One big long shallow tank in the room..would look awesome. Keep up the good work.
Love the massive tank idea!
Troubleshooting always got me second guessing my tank but when I solve it it’s super rewarding
Sorry for the tank crash, i know your pain, mine crashed recently too, lost a fortune in corals 😕 Good deal from Portugal? I am from here and can't find those 😛 do you mind say what store was it? My tank only have GSP and anemones left alive, so good deals it's what I need to start over. Thanks and keep going, always loved your set up without sump, completely diferent of the rest.
Sorry to hear about your tank! Yeah, the zoas were 50% off and free shipping. From Wild Corals. I'll post a video about them in a few weeks. :)
@DannysAquariums Thank you, yes I see they have still the promotion. But think I need to wait, tested my water, all normal but one of my euphyllias with 7 heads just dropped 3 and I can't see any explanation for that. I only have GSP and 9-10 bubble tip anemone in 1 rock on left side of tank, and couple euphyllias on right side since all rest die, anemones haven't moved from same rock on last 3 years, so I am completely lost 😕
3m tank for sure ! yeah start it as a mangrove on one side, then move into a reef rock structure. Like a real coral system!
I think this can be really cool!
Pff.. I hate it when a tank crashes. Hope it’s getting better soon 😮
It sucks 😔 but there’s an opportunity to create something even better now!
Sorry about the tank crash Danny. That sucks when this happens but am glad you fixed the situation. I think one frag tank as well as a larger tank would be great. There would be so much coral you could add into a larger system. Personally I love zoas but stay away from Palys.
Das ist toll, stilvoll und einfach perfekt. Mach weiter so .
A 3m shallow Project would be awesome:)))
Your 3 meter idea sounds awsome.
Have always loved these tanks in this space, loved seeing the updated Danny!

Thanks Blaine, appreciate you!
Black sand usually has magnetic particles that become a problem with magnetic glass cleaners.
Great to know! Maybe I’ll go for white sand then!
my worst nightmare when my bubbletip anemone got stuck and 'blended' in my wavemaker 😢 . I woke up in the morning and noticed the whole tank already cloudy. so sad as so much time, money, energy spent wasted 😢😢😢
Happened to me before! Safe to say I’ll never keep anemones in my tanks again 😝
@@DannysAquariums yeah am thinking the same, no more anemone.. going to start again, maybe macroalgae setup next 😀
you are my inspiration to start a similar tank, dont you dare giving up!
I won’t give up! 🙌
I aswell have a similar reef. Actually inspired by this channel. I do have a ghl doser awc 1.5% per day tho. Just to be sure. Its cheap as can be.
The 3m long shallow is exactly my goal aswell. Also no skimmer or overflow. The silence and sleek look of this style is very much my style.
A massive tank sounds nice but can also be a massive problem, either way, I would like to have your 40G tank if deicide to take it down, you inspired me to get into the hobby and it would be an honour 🙂
A problem with one really long tank is that you can't move corals to another tank like the frag tank if something wrong happens
That's true yes. But maybe I'll set up a frag tank somewhere else 🤫
3m project would be awesome… but use also your current corals cause they Are Great…that would be my suggestion
Definitely keeping the corals I have now and use them for future builds! :)
Hi Danny, just found your channel and subscribed, I am really intrigued by the way you’re able to get such beautiful tanks with no filters. i’ve kept fish all my life, and I’m just getting into saltwater and entertaining a thought of doing a reef tank. You may have said in your other episodes, but what are the four small tubes that are coming up the back of your aquarium? Thanks looking forward to many great videos.
Thank you! And welcome! 🙌
The tubes you see in the back are connected to a dosing pump which is connected to containers with magnesium, calcium and alkalinity liquids. Corals need these supplements to grow! If you ever have any questions, just comment and I’ll try to answer or someone else can reply to you if I miss it! :)
Yes, I heard you mention those towards the end of the video just finished watching it. Cool thank you for the info. Tanks look great! I like the idea about one big one, I’m sure whatever you end up doing will be cool
hopelijk gaat het snelle beter met je aquarium 😃
The massive tank would lookkkkk amazing!!!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
It’s going to be EPIC!
Man I’d love to see how a black sand tank turns out!
Yeah, I think it'd be really cool!
Personally mate as we are both going through the end of a tank crash.
I would write down what you want corals you are after etc.
Your simple setups are what makes you very niche in the hobbie
Anything you do you will provide inspiration ✨️
Personally, i think all he's proving is simple setups like this don't work long-term.
@TwoScottishReefers I don't think that is the case tbh.
Think what changes happened to the systems.
New lighting,dosing, and flow
Many systems are run in a variety of ways.
Every tank is different even when the setup is the same.
hope the fish are safe
Watch the video :D
Stoney corals and leather corals don't mix, especially in such a small tank.
Hi wouldn't that be avoided by running some activated carbon or purigen 24/7?
Possibly, if that is the cause. But it could have been something else and that wouldn’t have fixed it. And coral warfare would still be a problem :)
Hi what is your filtertion system canister or sump?
No filtration!
@@DannysAquariums Of course you have filtration. Lots of biological filtration takes place on and within the rock structure, not to mention biological activity within the sand.
How about only replacing the one in the middle with a bigger (not shallow) one?
I’ll always stick to shallow, I just don’t like deeper tanks haha 😝 and I think it’ll ruin the aesthetic as they won’t be the same height
Hang in !!
Definitely 💪 opportunity to build something bigger and better !
3m would be great!
Did you icp test
Good luck 😊 What was the problem do you think ? A coral dying ? Maybe send out a water sample ?
What is the name of palythoas at time 00:55 seconds in right below corner.
I believe those are called captain jerks! .. the name suits them 😝
1 large tank. Would be excellent
I think so! :)
Mangrove forest
Check stray voltage
Good idea, I'll do that! Thank you!!
tank cant crash if you do water changes
That’s not true.
If you run Nanos, stay away from leather corals. Trust me.
I’ve heard that before and looking back at it, it definitely makes sense this was caused by a leather!
@@DannysAquariums I love leather corals but they tend to be the first to send out chemical warfare. I've noticed that its a matter of time, not if. Almost always, at one point they do so I stay away from them. Look man, sometimes what seems to be a bad thing in the end turns out to be a good thing. Take this time to re-scape and re arrange things so that you don't get bored with the tank. Keep up the good work and don't give up. You've already learned so much. ❤
Me with two brand new tanks filled with Kenya trees and toadstools💀
@@downto2538 great! Now you have coral to trade for something cooler that won't crash your tank with time. Congrats lol
3m with the most basic simple less gadget setup.
