  • My soft coral aquarium is probably the easiest reef tank setup you can have. These corals are hardy, affordable and great for beginners! In this video, we're going to a saltwater fish store called Aquaasan Corals to get some new corals for my saltwater aquarium.
A few topics we cover in this video are:
    - Adding new corals to reef tank
    - Soft coral aquarium setup
    - Reef tank tour and fish store tour

Of course, I think your low maintenance soft coral set up is brilliant and gorgeous! That shop is mind blowing too, wow! And I just love the look of coral in shallow water. That is why I cannot be bothered to learn scuba, because the light gets too muted too quickly. If you ever travel to Bali, you must take a snorkel excursion out to Pulau Menjangan in the marine park in the northwest there's an enormous coral garden there in only 2 feet of water, but then agin why bother, you have essentially that in your house! What is it about the Dutch? They do aquariums so beautifully. I remember back in the 1960's when I was a kid growing up in the USA, I would go to the fish hobbyist magazines they kept at our public library, and there would often be planted aquarium scapes from Dutch aquarists that were absoliutely stunning. In the US it is almost like a macho act of dominating nature to have an aquarium, most American aquariasts have zero aesthetic sense, they just want some monster fish kept barely alive in a 20 gallon tank and thats the fish hobby for many, as long as it poisonous or got big teeth or looks scary they love it, I always hated that!
I live in rural Thailand, so I cannot keep even a freshwater tank, there are too many issues with power outages and counterfeit products. You really don'y want to try to keep a reef tank with everything comprimised, the equipment you buy, the salt, they will empty half of it out and cut it with whatever to make it more profitable, there is very little that can be trusted here. I really enjoyed doing a freshwater tank when I lived in Bangkok, there are some very unusual and interesting fish you can find in this huge market, where they sell tons of mostly what I think are incredibly ugle goldfish, but some mind blowingly beautiful bettas can be had and there is one shop run by a club of young men who do a bit of freshwtaer fish and aquuarium plant hunting in the wild and who raise killifish, there is even a few salt water shops in the market, but they don't care at all about ethics here, so the coral reefs just get raped so that rich Thais can have some color in their homes. That is starting to change, there are some people selling frags out of their homes that they raise themselves, marketing them on facebook.
It is actually illegal to keep a marine aquarium here but the law isn't usually enforced. So i depend on you guys and your tank videos and this one is a great one! In case you are curious about the many obstacles that make reefing impossible in rural Thailand, I know, most don't care and I will get shouted at by someone reading the comments for too long of a post, but in case you want to know among many other obstacles we often go for months where there are at least two lengthy power outages per day, usually lasting 2-3 hours with days where there are 4 even 5 outages. When they turn on the power there are sometimes tremendous power surges that will destroy anything plugged in at the time. Yes there are power surge protection that you can buy, but again, there are alot of fake rip off equipment, so you think you are protected and surprise you are not. Because they don't set up adequate water supply for anyone you have to buy a pump to move water into your home and they kill our pumps with power surges here, a shop in our neighborhood was forced out of business a few years ago because all of their refrigeration was destroyed, and they were already struggling, so I am not really complaining, but just trying to explain why I cannot keep a tank which I think would be difficult for anyone who doesn't live here to understand.
My apologies for writing a rather unpleasant and long post, but will subscribe, I think I would keep a shallow reef tank and I would keep several smaller ones rather than one large one which is what we often see. That way you can keep different types of tanks as you have done, I think that ios much more interesting and you can learn more skills more quickly it would seem. That you let the beneficial bacteria do the water cleaning is amazing, if you haven't made a video about that, I think that would be interesting. How can we do that? I am familar with that from freshwater keeping, but I didn't know until now that you can do that with a salt water reef as well. Just wow, wow, wow! Cheers!
