I went to this show in 2013. It was my last visit to NY. Ten years ago. It changed my life. I couldn't believe I was actually in the presence of these paintings I had only seen on the pages of a book. I cannot explain it. I cried, and I felt so rich.
Thanks James. Looking at them on the web just isn't the same. Filming the exhibition gives it a sense of scale not to mention the buzz and excitement you bring to it. Only wish I could get to NYC to see it in the flesh. Cheers
Of course we appreciate this (your last remark). Appreciate is too weak a word! Please don't stop 'doing this for all of you' as you say = (for us). There must be, among your fans, many who live in sort of dead-end backwater places and who just cannot do without your videos, just cannot do without your ALWAYS passionately interesting accounts, all the fascinating détails - often thought-provoking - you give us - SO generously. THANK YOU! a thousand times James Kalm !!
ThanXxX for taking the risk of making this video of Basquiat's exhibit for those of us that might not ever get a chance to actually attend. People like me really appreciate what you did!
I love the way you said "Now don't do anything to attract attention" .. then you tell the first person you meet inside that "I'm working" lol. But seriously, I love these videos! Thank you so much!
Thanks James , I really enjoy your videos . Your commentaries are spot on and I can say this , " You were at the Anina Nossei's first expo of JM Basquiat " . That is being part of art history . Fabulous , you deseerved this and your blog is brilliant. Liam Porisse. Artist.
your videos are the best... well played sir!! Love the trombone artist at the top... super sweet. I really like how the gallery guard is using diplomacy....cool dude.... all's well that ends well... good shit.
Is their policy still the same, now that it is 4 years later? Beyond the amazing artwork and your braves attempt to film it, I am amazed at the huge real estate these mega galleries can afford. Once you pass through those frosted doors, you really are on another planet. Is this really the future of galleries? Thanks James and Kate. Chris
Totally agree, James. He was a "colorist". The courage he had to paint over large areas on his surfaces is remarkable. It's what attracts me to his work. He knew color. I'm in love with the blues he used.
Sad reminds me North Korea but anyway the paintings are unusual , beautiful each paintings has a story the feelings are powerful it says alot in his thoughts lastly he was such a humble beautiful human being SAMO YOU LEFT US TOO SOON 👑 ❤
Ha Ha Ha The best man! I love your tenacious attitude on this one. I know most of the paintings so that was just a little refresher course. Marc Miller & I were just talking about JMB 7/15/17 the Princeton Art museum has the most of all museums. (Insider info.)
you are awesome brother. a true lover of art. your work brings the finest art to thousands who, like myself, would've otherwise missed the exhibit. these people don't realize that in the long run, more people will be exposed to this exhibition via your work, that by the work of larry gagosian himself. blissX ps. why wouldn't you get written permission beforehand? given your audience you shouldn't have much difficulty.
You're so wrong Max, I did overdub the in gallery naration in the studio. I knew I'd have to avoid attention, so I just acted like a "normal" viewer. Although I probably walk funny.
Great job James, Thanks! I agree he was a great colorist. Good point. I used to see SAMO working at night on the streets, in Union Sq subway & on parking lot walls around E 17th St off 5th Ave, where I lived circa 1976-79?

I love what you did Sir. Your narration is on point. It seems that real artists recognize one another. I would like to share a studio with you sometime. I have seen so much bad art in my time. I always felt so isolated. The abstract--street stuff was always easy for me. I just did not think it a great contribution to the world.
i love when the guards say you can see all the paintings online, which is such bullshit because they have decent images of like seven paintings, and then 30 fucking pictures of their installation where you can't even really tell what the paintings look like.
I loved this show. I hope they do another one soon. The last one previous to this I believe was in 08 in Brooklyn. Amazing works! You may have gained some re-known in your travels but as long as they are not aggressive or disrespectful towards you I feel the guards are simply doing their jobs. I found them to be indifferent for the most part and I only saw one instance where a guard had to get verbally aggressive to keep a man from touching one of the paintings.
We appreciate! For gagosian you should take with you a double that carry the spy cam And let them frisk you. Plus with a double at your side you can also make live commentery. Funny he thinks that zoomable pictures can replace the kalm experience
If you studied Jean-Michel Basquiat and his art work which was base off graffiti ; has the question ever come up who he was writing over in some of his painting from the mid 80's. I saw a documentary where they said or he said he would write over his own work. Now does that make any since when he came from a graffiti back ground. Answer NO. Then comes the question then who was he writing over in some of the pieces he did?

The security gentlemen were so cool about it. Wish all folks could be that nice.
Thank you so much sir for doing these. I'm a teenager who loves his work and it's so dope to see it live and how big they are. Thanks a lot.
He was a terrible human and the the sisters are worse

Ha Ha Ha The best man! I love your tenacious attitude on this one. I know most of the paintings so that was just a little refresher course. Marc Miller & I were just talking about JMB 7/15/17 the Princeton Art museum has the most of all museums. (Insider info.)

Way to go James!
Great job man!!
You're so wrong Max, I did overdub the in gallery naration in the studio. I knew I'd have to avoid attention, so I just acted like a "normal" viewer. Although I probably walk funny.
I love that Basquiat still polarizes. That he still drives people to love or hate what he did.
Sweet mi amigo
Great job James, Thanks! I agree he was a great colorist. Good point. I used to see SAMO working at night on the streets, in Union Sq subway & on parking lot walls around E 17th St off 5th Ave, where I lived circa 1976-79?
thanks for the try...hat tip

appreciate u made this video. =)
* u got his name wrong though . :P
this video was a gem
Thank you! Just film it and do a voice over later on so you don't get caught!
i love when the guards say you can see all the paintings online, which is such bullshit because they have decent images of like seven paintings, and then 30 fucking pictures of their installation where you can't even really tell what the paintings look like.
The great Basquiat was the Kerouac of tje art world.. Spontaneous, rule breaking, innovative and influencing ! Long live King Samo
+Vinicio Blanco I always considered him the Jim Morrison of the art world!
+axel hose Jim Morrison did not have a large body of work.I would have called him the Jimi Hendrix of there art world !!
+7thvenom I see that but he almost had a jim Morrison type of rebellious personality, so that's why I think of him as the Morrison of the art world!
thank you kate
thats great :)
Mi piace molto.
Thanks bro

Trombone is my FAVOURITE horn! Badass 'bone player off the top!*
Yeah, this guy was out in freezing weather, blowing his heart out..hardcore....
Mad respect!
Great Video I wonder how the artist would feel about you getting kicked out?
Love Basquiat...greatartist
kick ass James !...
He should pay you for adv. his gallery !!!
Are you narrating at the gallery or overdubbing the narration when you edit.?
jameskalm, did you see picasso in chicago this year? It was great =)
Nice
The trombone player at the beginning of your video was amazing.
And the trombonist was bad ass!
cant find these on google images 👍
We appreciate!
For gagosian you should take with you a double that carry the spy cam
And let them frisk you. Plus with a double at your side you can also make live commentery. Funny he thinks that zoomable pictures can replace the kalm experience
Why the no filming rule
Thanks james...we need to get you google glasses
The boldness of his surface might find comparison in Frank Stella.
cool
You could get away with being waaaay more low profile, if you did the voice over after. That way you could really take your time. Just a thought.
+Jessica Ryan I did do the voice over in the studio. I never have much time, they've got my photo on a wanted poster in their staff break room...
+jameskalm there's a pen with a cam buy one , for cases like this
who owns all of Basquiat's art in there??
Nice guys doing their job. Sill tossed out of best Basquiat show.

Great pics but, he's still recording after they told him to stop. He is trying to con security. lol
