"...because his work was of that moment but, of course, it transcends that moment in making all these connections and speaking to what it means to be an American over a particularly compelling period of time." - On point, Dr Boyd! This is why art is important and integral to our collective human experience.
I hung out with some of JMB’s friends on my first trip to NYC 1989. I’d known of JMB since the early 80s. Respect and Rest in Peace JMB & Anthony Eden Clark aka AONE The Deadly Type nyc. The saga continues.
This is very interesting stuff, I'd never heard of basquiat back when I was writing graffiti in the mid eighties, I heard of seen, futura, dondi, Cope, taki, kase, ramzell,
Gangsterism in Hollywood Africans could also be a reference to LA gang culture, it probably would have been the first time Basquiat was exposed to it since there was no mainstream gangster rap yet
Literally why the fuck don't people ever mention that the "most young kings get their heads cut off" line in the Charles the First painting is *also* a reference to... Charles the First, the English king who literally got his head cut off.
When I seen the words crossed out on his paintings I thought he was making a mockery of Freedom of Speech. Like he was censoring himself. Saving them the time and energy and censoring himself.
Jean passed away around white people that loved him.. his father and all his black friends was never around.. they were around only when he was healthy and alive..they gave him smokes and all kind of toxic stuff. Who were the closest people to Jean? His white girlfriend, white best friend Andy Warhol and his friends, etc. When Andy passed away (his white friend).. Basquiat felt like his world ended, like he has nobody anymore. Bottomline is this: there were bad people around Jean from black and white race but there were white best friends too. I'm happy that racism everyday is less and lessen a world.. thank you, JESUS. One day there won't be racism at all, screw racism. Moses from Bible was married to a beautiful black lady, so is King Solomon from Bible. There's such thing as bad people but not bad race, ask JESUS. Hugging you, my friend.

The link he made between Hip Hop scratchin' and Basquiat's scratch out of words is genius!

Good stuff! The lines blur, looking at Basquiat's work, between music, painting, and culture. Insights abound.

Gangsterism in the White House. Yep.
I think his art is a load of crap.
So why do you watch this?? And your comment is a real nonsense...
