    UPDATE : I received a different scholarship called HSCP through the Navy!

    Hello Erika, I am a senior at Rutgers and I am really interested in this HPSP scholarship. Decisions from dental schools come out on December 3rd. Should I start applying for the scholarship now or wait until I get accepted into a dental school. Also how long was the process to get the scholarship? Thank you so much and I can't wait to see more videos.

    Hi! Thanks for making these videos! They sure help a lot. I just hd a question. Would there be any difference with the HPSP/HSCP for someone who will take the 4-yr dentistry course versus someone who will take a 2-yr International Dentist Program course? I am a foreign dental graduate who graduated from the Philippines in 2015 and went straight to the US after graduation, as a greencard holder (going to be citizen in 2019) and I am also looking into ways I can lessen the student loan debt once I finish the IDP program to be a dentist here in USA. Thank you so much in advance for your input!

      Hi Anna! I'm sure you already know, but one of the requirements to apply for military scholarships is that you have to be a U.S. citizen. You mentioned you're working on that so it shouldn't be a problem. The Navy only does 4 year HPSP and HSCP scholarships. The army does 4 and 3 year scholarship. The Airforce does 3 year scholarships and I think they might be the only ones that also 2 year scholarships. I'm not completely sure though. You can also look into the NHSC scholarship which isn't a military scholarships. It stands for the National Health Service Corps.
      In case you want my opinion...
      If you only need to do 2 years, I would just take out loans. You're only going to be accumulating interest for 2 years instead of 4 which isn't too bad. You should also have opportunities to TA but I'm not sure if you will be paid.
      I hope some of this was helpful.
      Good luck! I'm a student at USC and our international cohort will join us when I'm a 3rd year.

    This is my senior year in high school and I’m planning to join the national guard for the many benefits that it offers. I made the decision to go into the MOS 68E but was wondering how this would work out in combination with the HSPS scholarship prerequisites. I haven’t talked to my recruiter yet because I am uncertain where the conversation will go since he stated that he CANNOT guarantee me a certain MOS that I pick. I am told not to sign any contracts and come back when there’s a spot but what if no spots are going to be open? What do I do then? My unweighted gpa is 3.67 is that good enough? Have to contact my recruiter soon because all of this is so confusing and most of the information is not given on the internet.

    • @ErikaCorrea
      @ErikaCorrea  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Tai!
      Definitely don't sign any paperwork unless you know what you're getting into. Nothing is "free" and there is always going to be something you owe.
      Are you interested in going to professional school after you complete 4 years of undergraduate collage? You would apply to the HPSP scholarship after your have applied to dental school (or any other professional school). This will most likely be after you graduate college or during your senior year of college. Do well in college and of course get a good score on the DAT/MCAT because you'll need those to apply. I didn't have the military pay for my 4 years so college so I wouldn't be the best person to ask for that. I received financial aid through grants and a minimal amount of loans.

    so if i join rotc, would I have to serve for 8yrs(from rotc) + HSPS obligation years, which would be 8+4=12 years? or ROTC serving years cover HSPS years? also, i thought the applicants were required to join rotc program in college to be eligible to apply for HSPS since one of the HSPS Requirements stated "qualify as a commissioned officer". Am I incorrect? Do u just automatically become an officer without even joining ROTC in college or anything if u get HSPS Scholarship?? also, does getting HSPS Scholarship mean that ur gonna be a "army" dentist? & is it true that army dentists make way less money than the normal dentists haha

    • @ErikaCorrea
      @ErikaCorrea  4 года назад

      Hello! Your thought process at towards the end is correct. ROTC and HPSP are not related. Therefore, if you do HPSP you will commission as an officer whether or not you did ROTC. I never did ROTC.
      If you go to dental school and have the HPSP scholarship, you will be a military dentist when you graduate dental school. The HPSP also exists for medical school and other health professions.
      How much money you make as a dentist really depends on where you work. But generally, military dentist make less money. I have a video where I go through exactly how much I would make as a military dentist which is a littler under $100K after taxes.

    Hey I know this is a bit old of a video, but for the 45 days a year you need to serve while in school using the hpsp, how do you manage it with school? Did you personally take a week out every other month or something? A little worried about that part lol. Did you have to do that or am I confusing it with the hcsp?

    • @ErikaCorrea
      @ErikaCorrea  6 лет назад

      Hey Tony, I'm not sure but I'm assuming you can still apply for HPSP and switch over if you get in. You'll probably still have to finish the time you owe though. How was your experience being in the Army reserves? I'm sure it's really different as a dentist in the Army.
      Do you have a GI Bill that you can use? That might be even more helpful.
      There is also a different Army scholarship called HPLRP where you pay back your time by being in the Army reserves. I'm looking into applying for this since I'm still on the wait list for HPSP.

    • @89justinsane
      @89justinsane 6 лет назад

      Yes but you will need to acquire a conditional letter of release(DA 368) signed by your Command. This is not the easiest thing to get approved because of manning considerations. I’ve seen my fair share of disapproved but most sign off.

    One question if I apply for this I can go to 2 years in college to be a hygienist then I just apply to the army for 2 years then I can be a dentist and don’t have to be in the army no more ?

    • @ErikaCorrea
      @ErikaCorrea  5 лет назад +2

      Hello! To apply to dental school, you first need to get a bachelor's degree at a 4 year University. If the college you go to offers dental hygiene then you can do that but you need a degree to apply.
      After you have your degree, you apply to dental school (4 more years) and you can also apply for this scholarship.
      Dental school is an investment. You are going to have to sacrifice money even if you get a bunch of scholarships. If dentistry is really what you want to do and you are determined, just do it and invest in your future. It's not a cheap road but there are always loans available.
      If you want to stay in the dental field but would rather be a Dental hygienist, then that's fine too! It's all about what you want. Don't let money be your obstacle.
      I didn't have money either. I received financial aid for my 4 years of undergrad and took some loans out to pay for the rest. I worked throughout college so i wouldn't have to take too many loans out. I also took a gap year before starting dental school so I could pay off those loans. If I wasn't awarded a scholarship for dental school I would still become a dentist because I could take our loans. You'll be able to pay them off once you graduate because dentist make good money!

    • @ErikaCorrea
      @ErikaCorrea  5 лет назад

      This scholarship is only for dental school and not hygiene school.
      If you have if for dental school, you would be in the military for 4 years active duty, then 4 more years just on the weekends a couple times a month. After all that, you don't have to be in the military anymore. You would be working for them as a dentist though so you'll still be doing what you love, just in a different settings. You also get paid the salary of a dentist.

      It's only 4 years in the military and 4 more years in the reserves which is only about 1 or 2 weekends a month. I guess if you add up all the schooling and total time in the military... It would be 4+4+4+4= 16 years.

    • @ErikaCorrea
      @ErikaCorrea  6 лет назад +1

      There is no right age! Some people start as early as 22 or as late as 40 (or even later). I'll be 24 when I start dental school. If you're interested now, consider it now and start pursuing it. The earlier you consider it, the earlier you'll become a dentist! In order to apply to a dental school, you have to complete the requirements at a 4-year university after graduating high school. Some people decide to go to community college first and some people decide to work before starting college. It's ultimatly up to you.

    • @ErikaCorrea
      @ErikaCorrea  6 лет назад +1

      The two main things they look at are your GPA and your DAT score. This means that they do care a lot! They minimum to apply I belive is a 3.0. If you have a lower GPA, you can get it up by either taking more classes or by completing a postbacc program. ruclips.net/video/XYdi_CdbgRE/видео.html
