  • To celebrate the coming Christmas season we've recorded a few of our favourite Christmas carols, for you to sing along with us from your homes.
This is one of the world's best-known and best-loved carols, in its original German language version -- 'Stille Nacht'. It was originally written by Franz Gruber and Joseph Mohr. This arrangement was written specially for The King's Singers by John Rutter, for an album which was released in 1989. John has allowed us to share his handwritten score (which we use in performance, to this day) for you to sing along, should you wish!
    -
    Patrick Dunachie - countertenor
    Edward Button - countertenor
    Julian Gregory - tenor
    Christopher Bruerton - baritone
    Nick Ashby - baritone
    Jonathan Howard - bass
    -
Sound engineering & mixing: Nicholas Girard

My grandfather was born in 1893. His parents died in an epidemic when he was three years old. He was placed into an orphanage in Louisville, KY, run by German Protestant Lutherans. It was a Dickensian childhood (and not in a good way), but he learned German, and each Christmas would sing "Stille nacht" in his beautiful bass-baritone. He would have loved this wonderful version. Thank you King Singers for the music, and for recalling this sweet memory of my Paw-Paw.

sinece german is my first language i'm used to mock my british friends with things like "try to say Leuchttrum (lighthouse)" or "try Streichholzschächtelchen (a box for match sticks)". They usually fail around the first ch :D. Long story short, i'm very impressed with the clear and absolute on point pronunciation of this song.

There are all these memes about German sounding harch and brutal.
And then you hear this. Something to prove that ALL languages can sound beautiful.

Well, there's a hint of truth in german sounding aggressive. The rhythm german is spoken in accents the first syllable of each word (this emphasis sounds very direct and in your face). Whereas "softer" languages, such as italian and french, put the emphasis on later syllables in the word (This emphasis sounds more lowkey).
But both language types can be used to make beautiful music. As evident in italian operas or german Bach chorales.

    • @Nikioko
      @Nikioko 3 года назад +1

@@orb3796 No. The difference is that German words are separated while in French or Italian they are connected in a liaison.
