Had a great customer of ours in and replaced the upper hose because it was leaking pretty good at the radiator. Looked at the thermostat while I had the hose off and noticed the o-ring was torn! Went ahead and replaced that too! 340k+ truck! 💪💪

@@Dieselnm101 sure it will. Also make it have less payload and towing capacity. Towing capacity from 15k to 13k or less.
Option 2. Get better shocks that can help control rebound rates. OE shocks will let that suspension unload quick.

I work on nasty oily aircraft engines we find good ol scrubbing bubbles is the best degreaser hands down. On the topic of your problem with the thermostat, the ford red coolant tends to break down and coagulate and stick to surfaces messing up thermostats, radiators, water pumps ect . I got rid of my red ford coolant and flushed with yellow ford coolant at 30k and have no issues so far. 2015 f250 PSD

ARod, haven’t had this issue so far on my 2018. When I eventually do, what’s your opinion on the SPE Low Temp / Hi Flow thermo? Worth the $64 upgrade from OEM? Once again, thanks for showing us how it’s done with/ the level of detail to make this a DIY-friendly project. You sir are a master educator. You have the experience to know what to do, and the comms skills to explain to us ordinary humans how to do it. Thank you!

Nice to see they make the thermostat easily serviceable. Not a big fan of those quick connect things but I’m used to them on my 23 yr old Jetta. Just have to be prepared to bust them when working on them. Do you recommend some sort of lubricant on those orings so they come apart easier? I’ve been using a haze of silicon oring lube from Napa.

6-7 Y/O truck in the cold of Michigan with the oem batteries...? Would also be due for first change of coolant in both loops by time. I wonder if the build up the orange coolant leaves could've washed up to the thermostat and been blocking it from sealing.

I have the same symptoms, blower motor works great, but can barely seem the get heat. The difference is my truck is reaching 188-197f average while driving/parked or warmed up but can’t seem to pump hot air out the vents. An hour drive and hands are numb lol.

In my gasser I tried a new kind of thermostat that was supposed to fail in the open position as opposed to closing when it fails. Problem was on a hot day with the a/c on sitting at a stop light it would momentarily get hotter and the thermostat would open all the way and go past these little prongs sticking out and then the thermostat couldn’t close. You are given no indication that anything is wrong except the engine takes longer to warm up, runs cooler than normal and then in winter no heat! Good odors but needs more work.

I just replaced my thermostat due to a p0128 code. It did not fix it for me. My air is cold coming out of the vents still. 2017 6.7 f250.

Appreciate the info as usual! Do you know anything about the low temp high output thermostat SPE motorsports makes? It has really good reviews, but I am curious if you had any experience or thoughts about it. Seems to be a good idea and does what it is designed to do, but curious what the long term effects might be due to Ford engineers designing the thermostat to open a little later rather than sooner like SPE's.

Seems the thermostats we’re stuck open or just cracked open.
What I do find strange though. In my 17 and yes I do know there are some cooling system differences. I will begin moving some heated air when oil temperature is at 100° F. This is without knowing the actual coolant temp but it is definitely within 20° or abouts of oil operating temp. This begs the question if the thermostats are closed and not flowing to the passenger side head what the system does to manage heat. ECT sensor is on the drivers side of the crossover. This kinda leads me to believe it was actually stuck closed and not pushing coolant into the heater core as there wasn’t flow. Why the truck only registered 165°F is almost strange. Perhaps I need to study the coolant flow diagram again to see why or if a stuck closed thermostat could cause a no heat condition.
Personally, I replace thermostats, serviceable O-rings and coolant on both systems at 100k miles. On my 17, there are 3 thermostats. Earlier vehicles have 4. I did not use Ford VC-13G to replace VC-3B. I went back with an ELC coolant with the correct spec and without 2-EHA, which is a corrosion inhibitor and also a plasticizer. 2-EHA is present in DexCool and Ford VC-3. It will soften and degrade any rubbers to the point of leakage. Ford removed this in the VC-13 formulation and utilized phosphates to replace it as the corrosion inhibitor. Good move on Ford’s behalf.
