This is a great van despite the mechanical issues you discovered. Rusty gas tanks are pretty typical. My own 73 needs a new one, so glad you showed us how to install this tank! I think you’re lucky to get it! As many older vehicles you buy and fix up, I’m surprised you were so bent out of shape about this one’s condition on other videos.
Many people seem to not be understanding the point of the previous videos. I buy plenty of vehicles needing work but that’s clearly evident or disclosed. The seller misrepresented the mechanical condition of this van claiming it was a turn key driver and that he drove it many miles which that was a lie. The body and overall condition of the van was fine but mechanically it was not and I paid for a turn key van… not one needing mechanical work. But at the end of the day I fixed all the issues the other owners could not and I sold it without having to lie about it’s condition. Hopefully the gas tank video will help you get your van up and running good. Thanks for watching!
Get yourself a nut driver and stop fumbling with that flat blade screw driver. Do yourself (or somebody) a favour and grease those hold down bolts then slide a piece of tubing over them to keep them rust free. You probably don't have a rust issue in NC, but Toronto does. Good video, will help many.
The grommet is also available from a Dodge dealer. I bought one about four months ago. It is the same grommet used for several years. Or so I believe. The size of the filler neck and hole in gas tank did not change. I have a 73 van and the part I bought was for a 1981-1983 van. The dealer’s computer software only went back to the early 1980s. The Dodge grommet is supposed to not leak, unlike the aftermarket grommet. Cost was about $27US.
Hey man, I have a 1973 Dodge Sportsman RV. It's on a van Chassis. I need to replace the gas tank but can't find a matching tank. Do you know if I can use a different tank? Any recommendations you might be able to throw my way?
Very helpful walk through of how to do this. Thanks for showing how its done from start to finish
@@lukehutson8692 Hoping it helps people who need to do it themselves! Thanks for commenting.

Is the tank still mounted in the rear like the van? Or is it saddle tanks of some sort?
@@ObsoleteAutomotiveI have rear mounted tank and am looking for a replacement, any place to start looking?
@@jdmbenz190 if it’s a plastic tank… nobody makes a new one. But the metal tank should be able to besubstituted.
