  • This video demonstrates how to take a blood pressure manually. In addition, this video explains the steps in taking a manual blood pressure, explains how to use the equipment, and gives tips on taking a blood pressure. This video is great for nursing students and other healthcare professionals.
    Although most nursing students and nurses will rely on machines to report blood pressure readings, they should know how to take a manual blood pressure. This tutorial provides an example of taking a blood pressure in the arm.
    In addition, there are a few tips and techniques you'll want to use. You want to place the cuff so that the arrow lines up on the arm.

    I’m in the polysomnography program at my school and my teacher spent literally less than 5 minutes on how to take blood pressure and told us it isn’t rocket science. We are all first semester students and our check off is soon, so I thank you for actually taking the time to teach this.

    I’m in nursing school and my instructors recommend you all the time. I was struggling with hearing where the diastolic is so I started looking up different videos to understand the systolic sound. I switched my ear tips to a smaller size as well, but no matter what I did I couldn’t get the correct BP. I found this video yesterday before my vital signs assessment and like how you broke down both of the sounds and how to tell them apart. During my assessment I said 140/92 and the correct BP was 140/90! Got it within the 2 point range. Thank you for all that you do!

    Was never sure how slowly you need to release the air, so thank you! Also, thank you for reminding people to tell their patients what their blood pressure readings are. I always tell people if it’s high, low, or good and exactly what their number is. It’s important for everyone to know what their “normal” blood pressure is.

    • @RegisteredNurseRN
      @RegisteredNurseRN  7 лет назад +49

      Hello Mark! It is hard at first to tell which sound is the first (S1) and the second (S2). If you can't hear it at all...then it may be your stethoscope. However, make sure you are placing the diaphragm directly on the artery and avoid placing it over clothes (because this muffles the sound). Also, if you check the carotid pulse in the neck and listen with your stethoscope over the heart at the same time...the "thump" that coincides with the carotid pulse is S1 (the first thump). I have a video that goes in depth with heart sounds if you are interested here: ruclips.net/user/RegisteredNurseRNsearch?query=heart+sounds
      I hope that helps!

    You explained this so much better then my teacher. He showed us your videos in class actually and I was having such a hard time learning on my own. Because of Covid we can’t learn on each other. :( so I’m having to try on my boyfriend and I’m having such a hard time hearing the thumps. But you helped explain it so well.

    Thank you for the simple explanation! It's been over a year since I was taught how to use these, and I'm expected to measure BP in my clinical exam tomorrow if my patient is known to be hypertensive
