    I am 93% deaf and read lips fairly well. Even *I* struggled with this challenge. BUT that proves Jessica's point even further on how challenging it is to lip read. I read an article once a while ago that lip reading is only about 60% effective, which is still not much in my opinion.
    I try to think on the bright side of situations where I struggle with understanding someone, no matter how many times the person repeats what he/she said. It can be funny sometimes when I thought I did hear what someone said, but it was completely inaccurate. Once a friend was talking about an organization with the words "For the Nation." I was so shocked and appalled by what she said even after asking to repeat. The whole time I thought she kept saying "fornication." I almost soaped her tongue out! :)

      So many young people are lightening speed at texting now. I think I would ask them to type difficult passages and show me. Or text me, if they were someone I want to have my contact info.

    HOH over here got all three the second time I watched it. Keep in mind that not all people pronounce words the same way. Like accents, lisps and the shape of their lips can throw me off. That's usually why I struggle with strangers, but know my families' lip like the back of my hand.

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  6 лет назад +6

      Andie yes!! Everyone is different which is hard to explain to people right? Like sometimes I will turn to a family member and ask them to repeat what someone else said because I know their lips shapes better.

    Jessica, I really appreciate your videos. I am a teacher and I am reading the graphic novel El Deafo with my students, and using your videos so that my students get an understanding that there are real people out there experiencing the challenges associated with being deaf. Thank you for being an inspiration!

    When I was little my dad often boasted about reading lips, I never thought about it. Now, sometimes at work I can pick up a little bit in high context, either of two expected words, but a third option comes up and completely baffles me.

    I know how it is being deaf I was born legally deaf I went through 5 surgeries when I was a baby it helped me here in a little bit but I need surgery again can't get the money so I'm using really high-end hearing aids but my hearing is getting a lot worse so I'm trying to learn more sign language I Rely mostly on lip reading right now but I think if I learn sign language it really help.

    This was amazing and really hits home your point. I'm still working on #3 and have watched it about 8 times already. Should we emphasize our words or talk slower when speaking to hard of hearing and deaf people? I always wondered what it would be like for deaf people when talking to so eons with food or gum in their mouth, ew, or are just mumbles, must be very frustrating. It's a wonder you don't hear about deaf people going postal because they have to try to fit I to a hearing world, and clearly we do this make it easy. Love these challenges. I'm going to try some this weekend at my cousin's wedding!

  • @libsyates2426

    I am not deaf or hard of hearing but I do often need to read lips (it helps me process words better). I did pretty good with this one, I think! Though I notice the biggest struggle for me is when someone has a different accent or says a certain sound in a different way. I've seen some people from Europe do this and it's far more difficult. This really is a difficult thing, and I'm glad that more people are able to learn that, deaf or not.

  • @riptobias
    @riptobias 5 лет назад +2

    I found that "reading" your face helped a LOT with the second and third sentence, as the context (obviously) isn't there. In a given situation I'm sure it would be easier to distinguish between "Would you LIKE a receipt?" vs. "Do you HAVE the receipt?" even if it isn't clear from the lip reading, and to figure out who "needs" to do what (Yeah that's all I got from the last one :P )

    and... "the butler has to clear the table?" the third one was so hard!
    I like putting myself in other people's shoes. I used to work for a women who's completely blind and I learned how to use Voice over on my phone and took a shower with my eyes close to better understand her too :P Btw... it's SO HARD to shower with your eyes closed.

      ASL Anissa ....boy, I just did not get that last one. When I was a kid I used to walk around my house blindfolded for a day. I don't remember why I started it, but I like seeing what people different than me go through too. It is humbling. Of course I spent an entire summer somersaulting through my house instead of walking, so maybe I'm just weird. Ok, there's no maybe about it. Lol.

    I am learning ASL, but I am not D/HH. I started learning to Lip Read when I was in the 2nd/3rd grade when my mother bought me a TV, and would tell me to turn it off, and I would watch TV with the sound off. I also have trouble understanding what I do hear, so I would lip read to keep up in conversations, or when at church and they were singing songs. Still, Lip Reading 'ain't no joke'. I got the first two "easy-peasy". I'm here to see the answer to the third one

    As a person who prides herself on public speaking, this emphasizes the need to be clear when you are speaking. I hate it when I ask a person, 'What's your name', and they say, 'Bendover'..... rather than 'Ben.... Dover'. When you are asked to repeat for clarity, pause between your words. Don't add extra words, even if you think it is being 'polite', as it is causing a barrier in your communication. Use inflection with your voice.... and emphasize that by pacing, and again, separate your words!

    I did the 3 lip reading quizzes and was keen to see if I got some words right..
    I felt disrespect when she did NOT provide the answer at the end of quiz AND to add smugness to the disrespect she said.. " I'll think about it".
