  • The idea of a jewel box has been in the back of my mind for years. Now that this corner of my backyard garden is in need of a sun to shade transition, it's the perfect time to open my own little jewel box with perennials that are light on flowers and heavy on foliage color and texture. It doesn't look like much but then what garden does when it's newly planted.
And as mentioned in the video, here's a list of some commonly used warm and cool season grasses. Mid September isn't a good time to plant warm season grasses, but you can certainly get after it with cool season varieties right now.
    Warm Season Grasses
    Acorus
    Calamagrostis brachytichea
    Clasmanthium
    Cortaderia
    Erianthus
    Hakonechloa
    Miscanthus
    Panicum
    Pennisetum
    Schizachyrium
    Spodiopogon
    Sporobolus
    Cool Season Grasses
    Calamagrostis acutiflora
    Festuca
    Helictotrichon
    Carex/Sedge (not a true grass)

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

I do too! Especially tough ones that don’t require too much upkeep.

Thanks for the lists on grasses. That’s always confusing to me.

I just noticed the mesh along the bottom of your fence. Is it plastic mesh or chicken wire? I have the same style of fence and grass grows through from the neighbor’s yard. I’m curious about what you did and if it might work for me.

Hi! It’s chicken wire I wove between the pickets and dug it into the soil years ago to prevent the rabbits from burrowing under and getting into the yard. I never got around to doing the whole fence so they inevitably found ways to get in.
