I'm a year late to this conversation, but I'm in absolute agreement with you @billr6983. There was that transition period when folks were starting to ditch their 35mm/APS AF cameras as digital started to become more accessible (i.e., cheaper) for the masses. Familiarity was super important for the transition. Camera manufacturers needed to sell the idea that digital cameras weren't just a fad, but a serious alternative to film. I love that the digital cameras of this era held you responsible for your shots, and I think that's why it was so satisfying when you finally get that perfect shot. Such a sense of accomplishment. I think that's why digital cameras still survive to this day. Of course, everyone loved the idea that you could shoot as much as you wanted (memory card and battery permitting), but it's hard to think that there was a period where shake reduction, perfect night shots, automations, and computations weren't the norm like we have on smartphones these days. Even during the mid-2010s when digital cameras were saturating the market, they started pushing megapixels, and smart features like selfie mode or social media-ready videos (lol at 640x480 youtube mode on Casio EXILIMs). Thanks for sharing these gems @OneMonthTwoCameras. This reminds me of the era when I got my first Kodak DX 4mp camera. The lens and colors were so pleasant. I blame you and other youtubers for driving up costs on the used digicam market 😄
I found a canon g5 (5 mega pix) at Goodwill for $3. I use it on still life pics. Pictures come out awesome and remind me a bit like film. They fill a void between film and ultra sharp digital. More and more people are discovering them. All the best. Jim from Georgia
I just bought one of these to continue exploring digicam. I can wait to use it, with my son. In term of zoom range Olympus have the Stylus 1 with a zoom from 28 to 300mm f/2.8 constant aperture. Amazing camera I had. Thanks for the review. Kiss from Kanaky New Caledonia 🇳🇨
I am a bit of a refugee from the spec wars, Fx3 and a closet full of GM. Love my setup. But. A lack of soul pervades. No playfulness. These old ones, once you look past on-paper technical attributes, have way more of a heartbeat/emotion. I think the engineers had so little to work with back then that they had to pour a lot more of themselves into the final product to make it work. And it shows.
This is my feeling exactly. New cameras are amazing and I love them for their technical ingenuity but they all start to feel the same and ultimately bore me. These old cameras as you say have soul.
This was the very first camera that I bought. A bit gutted I didn't go for the C-750 (recorded audio in the video, that was the only difference), but I remember taking so many photos I loved with it. Thanks for doing this video, and great to hear you got a deal with it!
I have the ca. 2000 Olympus Camedia C-2040 Z 3x Zoom. I used it all through the noughties "until digital got better than film". I still use it. it is currently sporting a IR 720nm filter, that has to have a custom WB set. It has the marginally larger "half inch" sensor but only 2.1 Mp. It records on a SmartMedia card, we can still read these, and still supported by current OM Workspace. It was not cheap when new and testament to it still working perfectly over 20 years later. Colour and definition are good. It shoots ISO 100, 200, 400, but I do not dare use anything other than ISO 100. It shoots TIFF, and jpeg in SHQ and HQ. TIFF takes a long time to process, shoot SHQ. It will shoot movie, maybe. It is small but slightly larger than my mft Olympus E-PL7.
Nice! I just picked one up a few days ago on Ebay for $18 in great condition based off some videos I had seen on it. One of the few digicams that hasn't doubled or tripled in price since it's gotten some love on RUclips. Looking forward to shooting with it and adding it to my collection.
I need help! I recently bought this camera for a vacation and tried formatting the card but it never works! I keep getting card error. I went to a technician and they told me the card and camera is too old to be used (or formatted?) I don’t know what to do!
I’ve been searching for a camera like this one for a while. I found the C-725 at goodwill today for 5 bucks. I always lion at old videos and photos, and almost get jealous of the uniqueness of the look, whether it’s the grain, or low resolution, because it’s so cool seeing such a vastly different perspective. I always wanted a camera that could take photos with a mix of modernity, and late 90s rawness. This camera offers that perfect in between. This is the missing link. This is what I’ve been looking for.

The C-740 was my main camera from about 2004 to 2011 at which time I purchased an Olympus XZ-1 which rendered it pretty much obsolete for me. This is a very nice camera, though somewhat bulky. I carried it on my belt in a TAMRAC 5693 which was perfect. I shot in AUTO mode and the colors were always very nice, they tended to be on the slightly saturated side, which I like. Indoor photos always came out great with the flash. The lens "wobble" a bit and this was perfectly normal for these cameras, so don't be concerned about this if yours does. One thing people don't know about this camera is that it can be fitted with filters. Get the Olympus Lens Adapter CLA-4 and you can fit any filter you want on it.

Some of the best photos I've taken were done on a Canon Powershot A460, despite the 5MP limit on the sensor. Although, I have printed 11x14 shots with that camera and never had any problems.
great video. I was lucky enough to pick up the C-740 recently (along with C-750, C-760 and C-760) - can't wait to get and and give them a try! Need to get a little more familiar with best settings etc and this helped, thanks!
UPDATE: Bought this based on your review. I haven’t had a chance to put it through the paces but I did get all the stuff including a memory card and a bag. Yeah! It’s really that good. Olympus is underrated as far as I’m concerned.
My first ever digital camera is the newer model of this, C-760. I still have it and it still works, it's a great camera, takes much better pictures than the resolution implies as the lens is just wonderful. I have a 10 megapixel pocket camera about 10 years newer and the Olympus still takes better pictures, especially as the long lens means there's no need to crop or "digizoom" so the whole resolution is actually usable.
i got this camera not knowing anyghing about photography! like i thought the images were in bad quality because of what i saw on the monitor. but then I saw your video and i out my photos on the computer. and HOLLY MOLLY I was shocked. Never imagined the quality of these photos! So thank you for this review! I was about to give up

@@moonkilig3234 thank you so much!!! I realized that’s the problem, I was using a 2GB card when the maximum for this was 256MG. Couldn’t thank you enough 😭😭🙏🏻
still have my Olympus C-765, its an 4mpx ultra-zoom, similar to this... and can beat like a drum all daylong, my 8mpx smartphone...the battery dont hold as good as it was, but from time to time i still use it.
Don't know much about photography, never used a camera before. But it seems like I inherited this model from family, I hope it's good for learning the basics
I just picked up two of these in a lot because it was cheap and looked interesting (and included a diving case, more on that in the future...) I had somehow missed this video you did on it! I just came back from shooting it in the backyard and being super impressed went to search more on it and saw this video. Perfect! Now I know what to try! :)
I really, really, really like the B&W JPGs from this camera! You're right, they really do have that Kodak Tri-X 400 look... sweet ! Thanks again for telling the world about this under appreciated camera. :D
Thank you for deepening my camera quandaries 😊. I have the c-5050 (in need of repair) the C-8080, more controls than a space shuttle. A few more and maybe I haven’t given them a fair shake.
I bought the Olympus solely on the testimony of a Magnum photographer. I think the lens quality made a big difference in the quality of images. Some of my favorites were made with my Canon A540.
Well I sprung for the C740. The bag, memory and manual etc. this review will help me get up and running. Now if I can find someone to fix the mode dial on my C5050.
I heard that Alex now shoots the Leica. Poor fella 😂😂. We tried to run with the big dogs back in the day and were told maybe we couldn’t afford a pricey little ad firm. They were probably right. Turns out maybe all you need is a little box… most of us.
While nothing can replace my love for analog stuff, I gotta get me one of those fancy ol' pocketable digicams. I recently scored a Sony Handycam from 2003 or something like that and it still works pretty well and I was kind of blown away how optically good that thing is. It also seems to have some sort of image stabilization because the video it shoots seems very free of vibrations (I am not super steady handed). Of course it records to digital 240p or something but that's got a vibe all on it's own. And, by golly, it even has a touch screen!
Uau... found your video after 1 year. I truly subscribe what you say about this camera. I own one since it came out, without knowing how I would love the way it works and the quality of the pictures. It was my introduction to digital. The big lenses truly makes the difference and go together with the "huge" optic zoom. I think you just showed me some tricks I didn't know it had... I guess its time to take it out for another spin. My Flickr profile needs new stuff in it :) Cheers!
Found a lightly used example of the camera on Ebay, base on your reviews brought it as a everyday carry camera. My usual camera is a Canon 5D IV, with the 35mm EF L II lens, which for me lately seems to get a lot of unwanted attention from stranger when I carry it around in public in the UK. The only downside of this camera is the XD picture card it uses, which is very expensive to buy, even a used one cost more than the camera itself.
A friend just gave me a Lumix dmc-fz7. Similar in many ways but SD card and slightly greater zoom range with a decent Leica lens. Taking this one on a long trip soon
Great review ! Thank you. I just bought this camera on the strength of this review. $5.99 + shipping. I also have a collection of older small sensor cameras. I'm generally not a fan of Bokeh , so these smaller sensor cameras are really the ticket !
@@OneMonthTwoCameras - I recieved the camera yesterday, and sadly it was dead on arrival. It just won't power up. I swapped out several battery sets to be sure, but no luck. Perhaps not surprising as it was impropery packed for shipping. They simply wrapped it in one single layer of Kraft paper and sent it on its way. A real shame.
I shot a similar camera over the summer, the Lumix FZ5, although the looks are a bit different, and WOW! having a stabilized 380mm 3.2 lens is so much fun. I may try and look for this one, the Lumix colours arent all that great but its still a charming camera.
I love your channel. I have been obsessed with the color of the old ccd cameras. I've collected so many cameras in search of that magical color. My favorites by far are the Olympus E-1 and the Fuji s3pro, although I own the e300, e500 and S2 and S5 as well. I process the pictures with the Olympus and Fuji converters and then edit in Adobe. Thank you for posting these videos. It let's me tell my wife that I'm not the only person in the world who sees this.
Are you on Instagram? Would love to see what you’re making with those cameras which happen to be my favorites as well! I don’t have the S3 but do have the E1 and S2. Worth their weight in gold for joy and color imho.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I don't have an instagram account. I just revel in the colors of the pictures I take of my family. I have the S2, S3 and S5 and think the S3 is the best. It has the awesome Fuji color and sharpness of the S2 but the dynamic range of the S5. The E-1 produces some of the most beautiful colors I've ever seen from camera. It's the only camera that I think rivals film in terms of pure beauty. Kodak masterpiece. I don't know why it's not more appreciated.
What "Olympus and Fuji converters" do you use? Olympus, Panasonic and Fujifilm produce "Extended-RAW" files and the truth is that Adobe does not understand them. I'm afraid Adobe Camera-RAW/PS/LR just leave me with a lot of work to do manually, I may use PS to fix a jpeg (I have PS Premiere because I shoot movie too). Silkypix (ISL) had a hand in building the Panasonic Venus engine, it converts Panasonic well but the editor is clunky. Fuji offer a converter "powered by Silkypix". Silkypix will also convert Olympus ORF but the best converter for the Olympus colours is probably OM Workspace, but that is not a full editor. DXO Photolab Elite makes a good go of converting Olympus and Panasonic files (unless you give it a lens it doesn't recognise).
Lovely channel to relax and watch, especially for those of us who remember many of these cameras first coming out, and whose main photographic subject is our child/ren. A suggestion, as you talk, many more photos please.
Thank you for the feedback! It’s something I get asked a lot. I’ll try and take more to include. With the two weeks I take with each camera, I’m honestly more focused on capturing particular moments when I have them which hopefully leads to photographic quality but not necessarily quantity. I’m currently putting in most of the shots I take but I can imagine that isn’t helpful to viewers when they’ve come for a review but knowing this is definitely something people are looking for I’m going to try and increase the shot output. Thank you again!

had this camera from new. love it. still works great. the only problem was a couple of the three crappy little plastic latches that hold the battery door closed eventually broke off so the door didnt shut properly and only a matter of time before the final one broke off. the springs in the battery compartment were just too strong. a fix seemed impossible, so i didnt bother. but recently i had another look and managed to fix one of the latches with a small bit of wire bent at a right angle to substitute for one of the plastic tabs. now the door nearly closes properly again
Yeah that is a common issue with this camera. SD card door latch can easily break off too. But those are fixable with some electric tape (just not aesthetically pleasant) - used my camera with that fix for couple of years back in uni.
I have an old Photo of my Siblings in the back of My Dad's old Outlander back in 2003 and my Brother is holding the bag containing the box to this camera. My mom had this camera until she got a Sony Cybershot DSC-W150 in 2008
Another awesome review!!! Love the look and vibe that camera brings!!! Can’t wait for the DP! Just to note…I was not given notification that you uploaded. So that sucks hopefully YT fixed that.
I just found out about the Ricoh Caplio / Ricoh GX200 which looks like a very interesting little camera to consider adding to your lens pouch. I just picked up a used model on eBay, pretty reasonable prices for a neat compact with an EVF.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I just pulled the trigger on it today, coming from Japan so probably a couple of weeks away. But now I'm diving into the user manual online and elated to see that it has (1) snap focusing, like on the Ricoh GR cameras, and (2) step zoom, which allows you to snap between common focal lengths (24/28/35/50/72) at the press of a button. It also operates off of AAA batteries if the Ricoh battery pack runs out / dies after years of recharging. I am surprised I haven't heard of this camera before, feels like a potential legend on paper.
You liked this camera a lot. The C-7000 you say it is one of your favourites. which one would you choose between these two cameras? Thank you very much for sharing your experiences ☺️
I really hope OM System can continue Olympus legacy. Some great cameras throughout their history. This made me think of the first digital camera my dad bought in the early 2000s. It was a Ricoh RDC7 I think. A real strange looking thing but had a 3mp sensor and I believe an OVF with 3x zoom. I must get him to look for it as I’m sure it’s in a drawer somewhere.
Sharpening and NR are forms of selective gain and even today on the latest digital cameras their defaults can be too aggressive. It is not unusual to turn them down a notch to stop them introducing artefacts. This may be noticeable at low ISO which should be clean as a whistle and needs nothing fixed up.
My first digital camera was an Olympus C900 Zoom, a 1.3MP camera from 1998 - I bought it brand new then. I still have it and it still works. Leave me a comment if you want to borrow it for a review. P.S.: It has a viewfinder. ;)
You are so kind! Thank you so much for the offer. I would love to say yes but I have a number of cameras to get through first. Perhaps someday though. Really appreciate that.

Absolutely surprised by this camera. I’ve seen quite a few where I reside near Minneapolis on craigslist/marketplace. I’ve always dismissed them as too far outdated....little did I know. The diptych function is like an ode, to the Pen series in a way. I shoot with a 1962 Pen D2 Half Frame occasionally.

I really like the editing you do on your photos. They are warm and with a very nice saturation. Do you use any filters or edit in Lightroom? Thank you very much for your attention
Hi @OneMonthTwoCameras Thank you very much. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply, so I am very grateful. I will watch the video you recommend. I take this opportunity to send you greetings from the Mediterranean coast (Valencia, Spain).
I was so intrigued, bought one yesterday! Mine was 22 euros on ebaykleinanzagen. I offered 35 to cover shipping which kind of puzzled the seller. I'm really enjoying your format. I think we are of the same tribe. I have cameras going way back. I like seeing lots of examples inserted in the vids. Subbed a few weeks ago.
The images are fantastic. Interesting but the dynamin range looks pretty good. My friend has Nikon D2h with 4 mpix and fujifilm xpro2. To be honest, the nikon images with 4mpix are having soul. They are really pleasing to watch. Interesting colors. And the CCD heart. So the number of pixels means nothing.
My first digital camera was a Olympus C770 Uz, it's similar , 38-380 with a 4mp, i always shot in tiff but is very slow to write on the XD card, beautiful colors and beautiful 10x15cm prints, i try to print a A4 without problem, iso 64 is fantastic. Can you try the Fuji S9600 ?

That is awesome! I have the TG5 and think it's a brilliant camera. I imagine the 6 is just that much better. I'll have to check out the Olympus TG 810. That's a new one for me!
The only problem with the TG 810 is the tiny controls. There are some advanced features too Very compact, 14 megapixel sensor which is more than the TG6. That’s why I like it. LUMIX and Nikon have interesting cameras that may be better but I’m stuck on Olympus. Oddly there is a very compact Sony with 20 megapixels. I didn’t like it. Fuzzy lens, only cost me $15 so not much damage.
Bought one of these for $30 cause I just needed a picture card for my fujifilm E550 haha came with 256mb and 128mb picture cards seems like a good deal
Do you know if the Olympus c5050 and c8080 also have the same exact “2 in 1” feature? I’m trying to decide between this camera and those two but I’m absolutely obsessed with the idea of a half frame digital experience😂
Wow awesome video and pictures! I was looking up this one on craigslist before the video ended, you sold me. I’m having trouble finding the c740 with a memory card for a good price, how is the c720 or c750? Would those two have all the same features that you enjoyed so much with this one?

I found this camera at a thrift shop awhile ago and could never open the battery box but recently figured it out and it had some damage but my brother managed to fix it. One issue is an SD/memory card. It came without one and I've been trying to research where to get one and which one is the best. Do u have any recommendations??
I bought an Olympus C-700 Ultra Zoom for $12. I have very little knowledge on cameras but I bought a smartmedia sd card from eBay (still waiting for it to come!) My question is, how do I transfer the photos from the camera to my computer? Should I buy a card reader or will an adapter work just the same? Btw, the smartmedia card isn't like the one you showed, it's those bigger ones. Both our cameras look pretty much identical except for some parts. Nice video!
Congrats on the purchase Murrey! I always use card readers; I like having a multiformat card reader that can read lots of different cards so that I can play with both new and old cameras.
The problem with is though that it requires a 256 MB or less XD memory card. Unless you already have one of those because they are old and rare the memory card will run you $70 - $90. Lol ask me how I know. I got enticed into buying one and found that out the hard way. Right now mine is a paper weight.
This camera has that vibe. How is the battery life? Are the menus easy to navigate? I also am a prime shooter so I want at least one good zoom cam. The video footage is extra gritty, extra crunchy, lol. I think want to get something in a similar vein but still researching. Thanks for making old school digicams something cool!
Battery life is decent but do you have an XD Picture card? If not, youre going to spend around $100 on one, which is kinda silly when the camera can be had for like $20 ha. You might want to look for an older Canon Powershot G series camera Specifically the G1-G6. The Kodak DC series is also great. I have a DC4800 thats awesome and similar to this. The Canons and Kodaks take CF cards which are much cheaper and easier to come by, if you don't already have some. If you are set on an Olympus Camedia, the C-5050 or 5060 are great cameras. They also take CF cards and have more features.

I am wondering if the look of your pictures come out straight of the cameras? or do you do editing to get the look? Does CCD make a difference to you in the image look over the CMOS?
I almost always process my images, including my jpegs. I happen to love post production so even when the images don't need it, I tend to play with some adjustments. With the C-740 I don't do a lot though because the files can't take a lot. All that said, I absolutely believe the CCD sensor has different color to a CMOS sensor. The greatest examples of that are the early Kodak CCD sensor such as those found in the Olympus dSLRs like the e-300, e-500 and e-1. They just come out of camera near perfect for my taste.
Have you checked out the work of Magnum photographer Alex Majoli ? He used different Camedia Cs for a long run in the 2000s including war assignements in Irak and all over the world. Since the buffer was so slow he had multiple ones around his neck and would rotate them in order to be able to spray shots. LOL
YES! I read that article. He had 2 C-5050s, and his work with them was spectacular. I have that camera as well and it's amazing. More sophisticated than the C-740 but I think I prefer the C-740s reach and point and shoot sensibility.
Correct! and also later the C-8080 too. The speed of those lenses is really impressive! I think those Camedias used Sony CCDs rather than the Kodaks used in the E line, but it was pretty sweet nonetheless.
@@sheldonspock5566 yes that’s right! I’d forgotten he had the 8080 as well. I do in fact have an M8. What an absolute joy those colors are. The early Kodak CCD and Foveon sensors are my all time favorites ❤️❤️❤️
Wow, this video was very inspiring! I found 2 alternatives in my local similar to ebay. An Olympus C720 (that doesn't come with the memory card) and an Olympus C5050. I can't decide! The C5050 has a manual focus in the lens that seems very tempting, but watching this video makes me doubt. Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

What a lovely camera! I can remember looking at this, or maybe a similar Olympus camera, but they were very expensive.
My first digital camera. This review brings back nostalgia moments taking pictures using this camera. Thank you.
I found a canon g5 (5 mega pix) at Goodwill for $3. I use it on still life pics. Pictures come out awesome and remind me a bit like film. They fill a void between film and ultra sharp digital. More and more people are discovering them. All the best. Jim from Georgia
Thanks for sharing! The G5 is a great camera. Had one myself.
Pushing Film pushed me here and I am loving it totally ❤️
Thank you!!
I love this!!thus!!! I'm shooting with a few older olympus cameras myself and have had stuff that literally blew my nikons out of the room
These camedias have some of the best looking color ive shot with. Their dynamic range in jpeg is surprisingly good too.
Thanks for sharing! Now I want a C-750 :P
@@OneMonthTwoCameras oi! 🤣
Have so much fun with it!
You describe my love for these cameras perfectly!

So cool!!

Some of the best photos I've taken were done on a Canon Powershot A460, despite the 5MP limit on the sensor. Although, I have printed 11x14 shots with that camera and never had any problems.
The megapixel race is a little crazy. It’s lovely to have but certainly not necessary.
great video.
Bravo!!!
I literally just binged your whole channel! It’s amazing! Love it! Looking forward to more!

Oh my I love the C5050 and C8080! Give them a little run around the block!
I bought the Olympus solely on the testimony of a Magnum photographer. I think the lens quality made a big difference in the quality of images. Some of my favorites were made with my Canon A540.
@@photom3 Alex Majoli!
This is my favourite channel on RUclips. Love it.

So I bought this as well. Now have this. Sigma dp2s and Fujifilm f31d. I need to stop😂

Uau... found your video after 1 year.
That is awesome! Enjoy taking it out for another spin :)
Love your reviews. Old digicams are so much fun.
Thank you!
A lot of hidden gems in the Olympus line up!
Totally.
This was a really pleasant video to watch, thank you!
A friend just gave me a Lumix dmc-fz7. Similar in many ways but SD card and slightly greater zoom range with a decent Leica lens. Taking this one on a long trip soon

Now you have me on the hunt for an FZ5!

Oh my thank you so much!!!
@@flixfan1 that is awesome. And yes 💯 on the E1
Just discovered you channel and am enjoying it very much. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!

Yeah it's definitely a plasticy build but just love the handling and experience of shooting it. So cool that you've had it since new!

Do you intend on reviewing the Sigma DP1? Mine just died :[[[ edited, commented before the end of the video, ha! DP2!
do you still like this camera? just picked one up for $30. it came with a 256mb XD card
What was the 3nd slip?
What charger does this need?
None. It takes AA batteries
Thanks!!
I have and love the C5050. I can fully recommend it though I am sure the C720 is great as well!
@@OneMonthTwoCameras thanks for your answer!
I have the C5050, just got it recently! What an amazing camera, and NO, it doesn't have manual focus on the lens. It's just a rubber grip.

hey quick question does anyone know if it's possible to download these photos with windows 10 from the camera?
just discovered your channel. your video is sincere and straight to the point. i've been looking for this aesthetic for a while and i like olympus, so i'll be buying this. i found one for 50 euros, do you think the price is right?
Thank you so much for the kind comment. I think it's a bit on the high side but not a terrible price. I would imagine you might be able to negotiate them down if there is an option to do so. Enjoy the camera!
@@OneMonthTwoCameras thanks for your quick reply! in the end i decided that the megapixels of this camera are probably difficult to work with if i want to do other projects with the photos. do you know the Panasonic Lumix LX3? i might go for that one in the end. around the same price range
@@sibelka1994 yes it’s a great camera! I reviewed it here on the channel if you go to my videos
so does the Olympus C-740 Ultra Zoom take a special battery. ? Ive seen one on ebay but no battery included -thanks
Had no clue about the multi spot metering, I just tried it in my c7070 and c8080, and its system is exactly the same as it is on my om-4t. Sadly, it isn't an option on the c7000.
Isn’t it fun to have on the old digicams??!
how in the world did you transfer your photos to your laptop or computer ? is there a specific software that i’m missing that i can’t download my photos ? i plug the chord from camera to laptop and it just doesn’t seem to want to import
I got this camera few weeks ago, and I had to buy one card adapter. XD but it's not fitting, I can't insert the adapter on the camera.
Hello! I just got one and I'm trying to upload the pictures to my phone/computer and it doesn't seem to work, my camera came with a olympus xd-picture card 256MB and it doesn't fit in the normal SD card reader things. Any help? (new to this)
You need an xd card reader
