    What a brutal trip, it was like they had it out for this horse.Driver sure was patient and waited for the right time to let him go.
    He was so much the best in that race.Most horses would have given up after getting a trip like that.
    Champion indeed !!!

    This race is a few years before I was born.. I grew up going school getting lift on the side of the gig when my dad be on the way to the track... I have seen heaps of race's . I must say I have never seen or herd of a horse that could do that..."check three times , out 6 wide and gets told to piss off at the back and at the right time he gives the horse all the Raines...... This beast still has heaps in the tank...
    (U can see the set ups in the race they tried to stop him...
    The feeling on the home straight must felt pretty good

    The best harness horse ive e ever seen any decade. The battle between poppy and Gammalite. It was great seeing these horses live at Harold park

      Chase up some videos of the great New Zealander, Cardigan Bay - u might just change your mind. He was the pacing equivalent of Phar Lap....

      @@kennethmcgill7910 Far too unreliable and temperamental. Even if he turned up with his mind on the job I doubt he could have rolled Popular Alm anyway. But in saying that it would have been interesting to see. Lord Module was a brilliant performer in his own right if he did have his mind on the job e.g. his wins in the NZ Cup and Allan Matson FFA.

      I disagree. The greatest standardbred to race in Australia was Maori's Idol. Beat the grand circuit pacers. That goes over the top of Popular Alm in my opinion.

    The mighty popular alm
    His highlight reel has no peer
    The nite poppy retired Vinny let him rip a half and he went 55 and appeared to have plenty left in the tank
    So he could have paced 1.50 that nite
    In today's world
    24 25 26 27
    49 53
    1.42 mile rate
    So yer a freak

    Never followed down under racing much but only heard of San Simeon when he came to the Meadowlands to race in the World Cup.
    I was wondering if Popular Alm and San Simeon ever raced vs each other?
    Thanks

      @marknorris1381 5 лет назад +1

      I don't think they did, but might stand corrected there. Popular Alm would have beaten San Simeon had they met.

    • @filipina5953
      @filipina5953 5 лет назад +2

      Mark Norris - I think your right Mark. San Simeon was a little later, and may have raced against the West Australian great, Preux Chevalier perhaps. I’m pretty sure strung a record amount of consecutive wins together (18 or so) at one stage.

      @@filipina5953 - San Simeon & Popular Alm were both foaled in 1976, San Simeon won the Interdomion in Hobart in 1981 as a 4yo, Popular Alm wasn't sent to Hobart to contest the series as may well have being recovering from injury or was an immature 4yo to contest that series. The 2 horses unfortunately never meet, as San Simeon only raced as a 2yo, 3yo and 4yo before going off to the US to contest the World pacing cup.
      San Simeon in fact strung together 29 straight wins from it first start until a 2nd placing in a heat of the Hobart Inter Dominion..

    it a standing start race it not unfair some horses love it some don't like mobile race some horses have blinding gate speed other i could beat them out of the mobile there are no more standing start races witch is a shame take the hunter cup it was time honor event now it's just a race i bet the new Zealand cup that is a standing start race that will never change
