Yeah but he even said it’s a heavy piece. Dave made a basket hilt broadsword in two weeks, and in the same time Jay’s blade...Native Americans used to use those types of jaw bones as clubs to break skulls and other bones...it’s super tough material. They all nailed it.
Its so nice to see them show their skill. Most people forget they have extensive backgrounds and deserve to be judges. This is more proof. So I would like to set a challenge. These 3 make the same weapon to the best of their ability. 2 weeks. And send them to Doug Marcaida for testing. Then on their website, or youtube if possible, have a poll up for the fans to decide who is winner is after Doug gives us his thoughts! Please like this post for them to see it.
@@LaPtaVerdad you've never actually seen any of them make anything, it didn't actually show them making these, if you believe that they made them then you're a fool
Agreed! "Alright I'm going to do this incredibly complicated and difficult technique showing off my true artisanship....(cut scene)...okay here I am testing said spectacular blade in a grainy video thanks!"
Technically, the three tasks shown here between them were an entire episode originally. Among my favorite lines cut: "I was looking for a replica. I wasn't expecting you to actually copy the Damascus pattern! Not that I'm complaining."
Umm...Ben's Blade was the most intricate, complex, and technical by a wide margin. The other two blades are great, but they dont belong in the same league as the Sutton Hoo, which requires FAR more work and much more technical forge welding. It was about the most insane challenge Dave could have issued outside of a Flamberge with the same patterns.
I agree, when filming is back to normal, get 3 previous champions as the judges, and get the judges and Jason knight to be the competitors, the normal show but in reverse.
I had that exact same thought. Maybe instead of taking 6 weeks, they all made them at the same time, and then just recorded the "interaction and challenge" videos and edited them together?
I mean they wouldn't have recorded when they decided on doing the challenge... I guess they just decided and later on shot everything on a single day...
It's great to see that the judges can perform so well in their own style of challenges. Ben as a former contestant in the show and without a mastersmith degree to my knowledge has never failed to impress considering he had the most complex build by far in terms of the forging process and he is the only one that has never lost a beat the judges competition.
I love the humility of these guys. They're clearly all experts but due to some additional knowledge, only J has the legitimate master title. Still, J is visually impressed by the craftsmanship of his colleagues while remaining open to learning new metals and techniques.
Well he doesn't WANT to break them, but he has to test them .... brutally and mercilessly. :D Also, those bison jaws... might as well grind them for fertilizer now that J's done with them.
I couldn't believe what Ben Abbott did. It makes me feel like : "I wanna spend all my money, in order to get that sword" From J Neilson, it was like: "Dude, I wanna be his student. Look at that knife" And, David Baker: "Jesus, your weapons deserve to be presented in an international museum. Look at that sword"
I’ve watched every episode of every season, and this episode was by far my absolute favorite hands down. They are all masters at what they do and it truly showed in this episode. I’ve gotta say, that Ben’s sword was a work of art and was amazed at the detail that went into making that beautiful sword. We need more episodes like this, I’m going to agree with one viewer who said all three make the same thing and have Doug test them all, with one add on, have Jason Knight guest in that episode to join in making it too.

All of those blades were beautiful! I enjoyed watching true master Blacksmiths. You should do these kinds of episodes more often. Maybe even forging your own blades after contests do there’s to show that you all can craft just as beautiful, sharp, and durable pieces of weaponry. Love the show and appreciate all the hard work and dedication you all put into your craft.😄
Well David Baker makes them for the presentation before they issue the challenge to the contestants. We don't see them tested but they said they use Dave's weapon to calibrate the tests and make sure they're fair.
Ben and Dave did change shirts tho; ben's shirt looks similar from the beginning to end, but you can see that the words on the front are different. it just looks that way because they are all black-based shirts. I believe it could be genuine, and it could be that J was too into his work and didn't take a shower for two weeks. Nonetheless, whether the film was taken with a two-week time gap or not doesn't change the fact that they all came up with some amazing blades
It’s awesome that we got to know the guys more! After seeing so many episodes of the show I think it is awesome that we can see the work of the people who are judging the blades! Hopefully you guys can do this again. It was very cool.

I really appreciate these animations that show what the smiths plan to do. They’re really well made and the visuals are great so anyone can understand it. Great work.
I love all the judges (even Jason) but I just think it’s too cool that Ben was a normal contestant who went on to win twice and become a judge. I will miss Wil though, he was surprisingly insightful and important for being the voice guy

yeah man it was actually a lot more impressive than cutting through boxes. I wished the tests could be more exotic to push the blades to their full potential, but then again you don't get a pig carcass every day.
Ben’s sword is so awesome. I just don’t understand how he was able to forge weld those twists together and that wrapped piece around the edge. Very impressive.
to be fair, wouldn't you do the same if you spent two weeks on it? Plus it would be hard to get stuff like sugarcane all set up, or pig carcasses, or ballistic dummies and etc
