- Francesca Albanese, United Nations special rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, says the latest violence in Israel and Palestine has shocked even long-term observers of the conflict. She says Hamas atrocities cannot justify Israeli crimes in Gaza, where at least 3,300 people have been killed since Israel began pounding the territory with thousands of bombs. "What we are watching is a catastrophe of Olympian proportions," says Albanese. "The only reasonable and necessary thing to ask for is an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, which of course must be also accompanied by the release of the civilian hostages that Hamas has taken." She says the scale of Israel's response cannot be considered proportional, and warns that the displacement of potentially millions of Palestinians from Gaza would constitute the "largest instance of ethnic cleansing in the history of this tormented land."

All Israeli adults are soldiers or soldiers on reserve duty. By international law, they are legitimate military targets, particularly if they took positions by force, even if off duty. Hamas acted legally when attacking the Israeli positions ("settlements") and taking some prisoners (aka hostages). Hamas is acting as prisoners in a virtual concentration camp and has the right to fight back. Israelis should not keep their own childred in a military post that is a legal military target.
Occupation of Palestine and persecution of Palestinians, is not purely Israeli crime, it is American, British, and European colonial atrocious plan, with weapons, media, political justification of occupation, and intimidation of Palestinian rights supporters . Guterres and UN, fear the Israelis, and cannot say: One retaliation from Palestinian resistance can not be equated with a century of Israeli occupation's massacres and dehumanization of Palestinians. What is the difference between the Israeli state and Hamas? Both are killing humans in the name of land and defense. There is only one difference: the magnitude of the atrocity committed by the Israel state is far bigger than that of Hamas.
One immediate difference is motivation. Israel is motivated by a secular materialistic ideology of land seizure and racism that is wrapped in the trappings of Judaism and finds enemies in Arabs, Christians and orthodox Jews.
Hamas is a force that while most likely furnished by allies from neighbouring countries, is nonetheless a reactionary force arising naturally enough as a response to the oppression by the Zionist force already mentioned. There are many more differences. Can you think of any?
