I think for electric vehicles to have a chance we need more of these basic, no-frills and more affordable cars. Most people don't care at all for fancy technology features.

Those that would buy such cheap cars buy their cars only because: they are cheap. They don‘t care which energy drives them. They want cheap. Nissan Leaf is not cheap. Cheap is Wuling (GM), Citroen Ami below 10K. Of course they are not useful in any way. But cheap. My Model Y costs me less than a VW Golf TSI. For me that is „cheap“. Others only see the MSRP as you call the price in the US and nothing else. I always see the total cost of ownership. The price or MSRP is only a third of that.

@@justinoconnor8257 Of course not. The US boys can not drive in such cars we use. They would not fit behind the steering wheel in a Fiat 500E, a Dacia Spring, A MG ZS EV, a Peugeot E-208 etc. pp. And those cars all have ranges up to 250km or about 150 miles. Our cities are not 500 miles apart. 500 miles brings me through half of Europe!

It's not fair to keep comparing it to a Tesla. You make some legitimate critiques of the car but constantly comparing it to the top of the line manufacturer isn't apples to apples. I'll probably never be able to afford a Tesla, nor am I looking for a luxury vehicle. If we're going to move in the direction of electric vehicles as a whole, we need these more accessible models.

    Hi Shelby, a few notes:
I noticed you were driving in Eco mode which is designed to smooth out acceleration to use as little power as possible to get up to speed. Turn off Eco mode and the car becomes a speedy jackrabbit!
Using the arrow buttons on left side of the steering wheel you can navigate to the battery menu and there you will see the charge rate and estimated time to a full charge while charging the car, sadly it is not as visible as Tesla but it is there.
If you ever do another Leaf review, if possible, try to access a fully equipped Leaf SL Plus, still not a Tesla, but it is much more tesla like than the particular Leaf variant you were driving.
    Keep up the good work.

There are plenty of Chedemo connectors all over and lots of leaf owners go on road trips and also commute to work . Had to give this one a thumbs down because all I get is how great her Tesla is and how lame the leaf is in her opinion .

  • @Agentsingh
    @Agentsingh 2 года назад +90

The Nissan Leaf is a great everyday option and highly affordable for an electric vehicle. The point of an electric car is: it doesn’t run on gas & it gets you places. The Leaf fulfills all those requirements.
The constant Tesla comparison is becoming annoying tbh. It’s an out of touch attitude because not everyone can afford a Tesla nor get the financing for one. The down payment on a Tesla is $10,000 alone with a $600/mo payment. It’s not accessible to everyone. So instead of critiquing the “simplicity” and the “downgrade” that this car is, you should recognize it’s accessibility & affordability. That would be an honest and thoughtful pov rather than the childish & snobbish “BUt ITS nOt a TeslAAaaa”.

I also only charge at home so it works perfect for us since I have another gas car if needed for roadtrips. I think for 25k its a no brainer. We walked away from Tesla due to the price, and I'm a tech person (software engineer at big tech). The noise is superrrr overkill though, the new Teslas we drove had a quieter back up. If you’re a two car household it’s great for one of your cars - but like mentioned in this video it’s not for longer road trips. It’s plenty peppy for city driving and handles really well. The Leaf is the OG of EV’s and I respect that. We’ll get a newer EV for our second car at some point soon, but plan on keeping our Leaf for many more years.

Very interesting review, especially because you made several mistakes, but this shows the perspective of a "normal" person, not a car reviewer/ car fanatic.
For example, it's crazy how the ProPilot marketing material is done badly, despite it being a good system (not as good as autopilot, but still much better than competitors). In particular, the thing you said that you should first start breaking and then the car continues to brake is not a "driving assistance" feature (part of ProPilot), but it's a safety feature part of the Autonomous emergency breaking system that acts only in case of imminent crash if the driver hasn't pressed hard enough the break.
Also, the ChaDeMo plug is one of the biggest weaknesses of this car: it's a deprecated standard, that is not going to be deployed anymore in new charging stations.
Also, charging an EV at a fast charger above 80% is a crime. The charging power after 80% is almost every EV is really slow, also for long-term longevity of the battery, it's better to avoid fast charging over 80%.

Nice overview however, it is massively unfair to compare this with the in-line performance of a Tesla or Mach-e especially their performance versions. Tesla and Mach-e are both considered high performance vehicles (anything with 0-60 times of 5 seconds or less would fit the description of a high performance vehicle). Seriously, that's about as fair as comparing a Prius to a Camaro ZR1. Consider as well, that the Leaf Plus versions (62 kWh) have significantly more torque and Hp, and subsequently a bit quicker, than the 40kWh version you were testing. The Leaf Plus will do 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds which will put most comparable economy ICE vehicles to shame. The Leaf is notoriously reliable having won awards from KBB and Consumer Reports for dependability and extreme low cost to own. There's virtually nothing that ever needs to be done to them and with the new heat tolerant battery chemistry very little ever goes wrong with the Leaf. I own a 2015 and a 2019 Plus and have only ever needed to open the hood to show friends and family whats under it.
Consider that, unlike every ICE vehicle, the Leaf has no accessory, serpentine or fan belts and none of the associated pumps or pulleys, and no alternator, (under the hood there are no whirring or moving parts), no mechanical water pump, no power steering pump or hydraulic fluid to check, no high pressure high temperature engine coolant system, no transmission or transmission fluid, no spark plugs, no coil packs or ignition control modules, no fuel injectors, no fuel pumps, no fuel filters, no fuel pressure regulators or fuel injection control modules, no oil pumps, no oil filters or motor oil to change, no manifold or head gaskets to leak, no PCV valves, no O2 sensors, no vacuum tubes or clamps to leak, no exhaust pipes, no mufflers, no catalytic converters AND NO EMISSIONS TESTING EVER!
For cheap, ultra reliable transportation that will likely last for 15 or more virtually "maintenance free" years an EV like the Leaf can't be beat.

I have a Nissan Leaf 2019 that is the SL trim and I have a Tesla Model 3 SR plus. What I really like about the Leaf is that it sits higher up and is much easier to get into and out of, esp for my 95 year old dad who has limited mobility. It's the perfect scoot around town vehicle with no need for fast charging at all when you have a lvl 2 charger at home. I'd highly recommend it as a good beginner EV if you have a gas car for longer trips. We did take the Leaf on a 5 hour long trip with having to fast charge 3 different times going and coming back. That was long with the battery warming up so much. But at least the cruise control actually works, and works well on long drives and on the highway. The Model 3 on the other hand..... We have a 2021 with no radar, camera only sensors. The phantom braking is real and very dangerous, extremely so. When you are in autopilot it will suddenly slam on the brakes for literally 0 reason. We have full self driving on the car as well and I was in self driving mode on an empty stretch of highway in New Brunswick and suddenly the car sharply braked. It did that two more time in quick succession. Each time I pushed in the right steering wheel button and said bug report phantom braking. But they still haven't fixed that issue. So, we essentially can't use autopilot or FSD at the present time. Yes the charging network is excellent but they jacked up the price of charging dramatically in Canada due to it being time of use and not per KW used. That's due to Measurements Canada not updating their standards yet. The car is low to the ground and my husband hates getting into it. I don't mind it. Yes, the touchscreen is wonderful, the navigation rocks. The acceleration is good (good enough for me to get a ticket haha). So, in a nutshell both cars are great, for different reasons. I wouldn't part with either of them, esp. now with the price of gas. Just wish the phantom braking issue would be fixed sooner than later.

At this price point MG ZS EV or tata Nexon EV offers much more value for money, comfort and driving dynamics, you need to try them out 😍

I live in Seattle and own a '18 Leaf SV. It's the perfect car for getting around town. I mostly use the light-rail to get around where I need to go so I use the car maybe once or twice a week (~15,000 miles since 2018). I have to street park it so I like how inconspicuous it is. It's not a Tesla, like Shelby said, it looks just like a normal car. Don't have a garage, so I need to rely on the charging networks around town. Plugshare is a must. CHAdeMO is being phased out which really affects the long-term value for me since I rely on these networks. Most charging networks only have 1 CHAdeMO and it can be frustrating if it's out of service - which can happen (again, Plugshare is a must). Where the Leaf does not shine is road trips. Driving down to Portland (~140 miles) requires at least 1 or 2 fast charges (especially depending on the weather) and the car does not have liquid cooling so Nissan throttles fast charging after a cycle which is a PAIN for road trips.
However, I'll keep it until it no longer runs or I can't charge it anywhere because it's paid off and allows me to do 95% of the things I need it for at the fraction of the cost of any ICE car. It also has CarPlay, I never use the Nissan UI.
