  • The National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), the NICHD, and the US Department of Education collaborated and produced a document titled Put Reading First: The Research Building Blocks for Teaching Children to Read Kindergarten Through Grade 3 (Armbruster et al., 2001). This guide summarizes what researchers have discovered about how to successfully teach children to read and describes the findings of the NRP report in five areas of reading instruction, one being vocabulary. Each section gives a definition of the skill, explains the research pertaining to the skill, gives implications for instruction, and describes proven strategies for teaching each reading skill.
