- Seeing is believing! Drill Sergeant was around 15 lengths clear when he decided to pull himself up heading out for the final circuit at Haydock in October 2010, and dropped to last place. However, he quickly made up the ground he lost and ended up winning the race! A P McCoy at his brilliant best 👏

You have to wonder what was really going through that horse's mind. He actually won two races in one race just to prove a point.
I think he wants the competition from within the group. Out front, he didn’t hear anyone trying him. This could be a spectacular horse with wise management.
Probably the stables were in that area. Horses aren't stupid. They have their own minds.
@@debs4573 I agree... whether if we are right or wrong... everyone needs incentive to do their best... it's kind of boring to be out in front all alone... he might have also just wanted to be with his "buddies"... LOL...
Horses don’t think like that what.. they don’t do anything to “prove a point” to humans..💀💀
@@Chxrries you have obviously never lived with a horse.
He got so far ahead, he wanted his buddies to catch up. Also good job by the jockey, just letting the horse do his thing. He rode him soft which paid off.
My observation as well - good jockey, not whipping the horse, allowing him to slow down, recognizeing his need to be with the herd.
TrueThatTrueThat! A few years ago I heard Richard Migliore say "horses are heard animals and they love running with other horses or something like that". When I seen this, flashback to Migs statement.
Sorry, no, the jocky beat the horse like mad at the end. Whips should be band on horses. You would not like it to be wiped if you dont work fast enough!!
@@karinbradbrook7291 ain't gonna happen karen
@@karinbradbrook7291 The whips that are legally required to be used in races are barely felt by the horses, it just makes a popping sound. It’s like being hit with a pool noodle. And crops that are used in other disciplines are meant to be used lightly, with a tap on the shoulder to remind the horse to keep working and keep their focus on their job.
Must've been an emotional rollercoaster for anyone who bet on him 😂
In my early adult life, I was an exercise jockey at a thoroughbred race barn. There was a filly there who was highly talented, but never won a race, because she would do the same thing. She would get so far ahead, and then seem to get nervous out there in front, then sink back into last place just to come in second place every time. She could have easily won any race, most times she wasn’t even very winded at the end of a race, but we all decided she just didn’t like being in the lead. It was heartbreaking to see such talent and not be able to help her.
She went on to be a brood mare. I changed jobs before her foal ever raced, so I have no idea if he was any better.
she was not high horse of the herd, she was alone and being alone means a predator would pick her out for attack they dont know they are running to win races or what not, allthey know is higher or lower and where is safty. hitting with whips and pulling on a pain bit means this trend is even more pronounced in the horses mind. it means life or death to be with the herd and be near the lead horse to avoid being picked off.
Who did you ride out for Charlie please?
I know this, I had an Arabian stallion, he never won a race, always finished second, but could even keep up with a Thoroughbred, so was probably much faster than the average Arabian, but he wouldn't finish first.
What's her name?
@@mikamichan1842 her name was Terra’s Star. Why? Do you think you knew her?
jockey knew horse was more competitive when closer to other horses so he slowed him down, just shows the level of brilliance in the horse and rider
The title is misleading- the horse remained in a canter and never walked- but I found the announcer's phrasing of "stone-bonking last" very funny 😂
Both Secretariat and Seabiscuit did similar things. Secretariat liked coming out of the gates in last place and Seabiscuit would sometimes slow down when in the lead and then speed up again to win.
Seabiscuit's behavior was similar, but Secretariat's definitely was not; he never got a big lead only to deliberately slow down so his competition could catch up.
Secretariat never did anything like that
Sea biscuit liked the energy of seeing the other horses in the race which made him run faster , which is why he slowed down
@@kathrynhoward4196 I didn't say it was. I said he like to come out of the gates last.
@@beebop333 Yes he did. He liked to come out of the gates last and then win.
he was like- “Yeah! I already finished!” but then the other horses kept going and he was like: “Wait we’re still going??”
Lol
"There, I won....wait...Oh! We're not done yet??"
That’s pretty incredible work by the horse. I just hate that his rider felt the need to whack the crap out of him in the end. Good grief! Have some respect for such a fine animal. No horse deserves that!
Completely agree! My heart hurt for that horse that gave his all after slowing up.
They are a lot tougher than we think and their rumps are solid muscle. Also the jockey doesn't hit as hard as it looks.
@@davidw.robertson448 have you never seen a horses skin twitch when a fly lands on it? And hitting muscle isn’t less painful than hitting fat. Try it sometime…
Appeared to have had the desired effect.
@David W. Robertson people who say this don't know horses... or any animal. And should never be allowed around them if thats how you think. Despite what you think, horse skin is thinner and have more nerves. A crop is extremely painful.
Drill Sargent reminds me of Triple Crown Winner Secretariat who ran the race his way ~ from last to 1st 🐴💜
Oh...wait...I gotta let the others catch up. It's boring if I don't!😂
That’s hilarious
😆 Yep, that corrupt.
You may well be joking but horses have personalities just like people. Come from behind horses have been around for a long time and some of them have been the best of the best. I don't know this horse's record but I wouldn't be surprised is he's one of them!
also add to my other comments the herd was way behind a h erd or other horses create a draw that is why you can get horses to go places tht frighten them if you use a lead horse that is confident who can draw the horse across scarey things. this herd was a draw to the lead horse he doesnt care abot winning a stupid race but about his safty and rank in the herd.
Drill Sargent thought he was only going one time around.
Oh, good point. 🧐🤔👍
I like how the jockey gave him freedom
Clearly the best horse in the race. He had a soft lead and wasn’t going fast, which meant when it pulled itself up it effectively started another race but from further back from where it was.
Weirdly wonderful!!
The rest he took mid race freshened him up. I don't know what is funnier, the horse or the announcer. The man is a lyrical poet.
Smart horse! Knew his job was to pass the post first and then he could go home for hay. Just didn't know how many laps there were.😁
That's exactly how I thought it looked, he had past the post, and thought the race was over. He wasn't just pulling up to wait for the horses, he was pulling out towards the outer fence to go home to his hay, before the jockey got him back towards the inner fence just as the other horses caught up with them.
Horse was just wondering what happened to everybody.
That was awesome
Funny race, fast horse.
Drill Sargent just wanted to show his stuff! 😂😂😁
Absolutely stone bonking last I love It!
Gosh that's ingredible! Exceptional really👏👏
Those jockeys are really going to the whip at the end 🫤
This happened years ago, if I remember rightly the horse said after the race the standard of the other horses was so poor he just wanted to make the race interesting.
"The horse said"
🤣
😄
u r funny
He just did not want to be by himself…
The jockey pulled the horse up, not the horse itself
“Stone bonking last” 🤣🤣🤣 God I love the British!
Thank you for sharing.🐴
Psych them all out! Next race, one hoof behind his back!
Drill Sergeant certainly has a mind of his own 😆
And that’s why the whip rules needed to be changed.
Changed in what way?
@@nala8223 BAN IT!!! Its very painfull to be whiped. You would not like it.
He said it was too easy and that he needed to make it more difficult
Will keep this vid to show to all my friends who think racing is cruel to prove that if horse doesn't want to race it won't race but if it does it will !!
You do not need to do that, you only need to show a riderless horse still running despite having no jockey after unseating.
@@seanscanlon9067 Horses want to stay with the herd, which is the reason a riderless horse will keep "racing". This horse slowed down for the same reason probably. Usually you don't see something like this happen because if the horse decided to slow down the jokey will beat the shit out of it. Kudos to this one for not beating his horse.
@@pumpkinhead8593 Yeah that it what I am suggesting, that horses are not being forced to run and if they were then they could just stop doing so once they got rid of the jockey.
They run because they want to and will not run if they really do not want to.
@@tobleroonie5043 How exactly do riders "abuse the hell out of" horses, because that certainly does not happen here in the UK?
Unless you are talking about elsewhere?
This jockey was very good to the horse he was riding, you're right. But sadly with such big coin purses waiting to be won, people, as they do, abuse horses with whips or even drugs and tying in extremes. It's never the discipline (exemptions being big lick and the like), it's just the people within it. No hate, your plan is a good one, but I just wanted to say this as a disclaimer.
Drill Sargent thought I have to give these other horses a chance to beat me. But they still couldn't catch him.
Way to much use of the whip in my opinion.
I wonder if he was so far ahead, he figured the race was over and he could chill out. He seemed to be like "oh shit" when the rest of them caught up. That was hilarious! Is there an interview with the jockey about it?
That is the tiniest steeplechase colt I've ever seen. He has a lot of talent but he was whipped like mad at the end.
Every race horse is whipped like mad during a race
@@nala8223 I have never been to a horse race but I doubt there would be a way to stop me from reaching the winner jockey and give him one good whip on the head as a adequate prize (the toughest part of human body - you can not feel fly sitting on your head like horses feel the slightest touch of na insect) - it could be the fastest way to get him to proper view 😅
Reminds me of Secretariat who won by 30 some lengths once
Move over Secretariat. Drill Sargeant coming through. 😲
Just goes to show some horses like to prove a point. My small little 14 hand paso Fino/tenn Walker were always at the front of the herd when they let about 100 horses on 1000 acres for the Winter in South Dakota. He and his best bud an Arabian. Being horses.
What a horse and I've never heard of it.
Too bad that win was ruined by his jockey who whacked the hell out of him on the stretch run.
Well, in all fairness to the jockey: he knew he had the best horse and just wanted the horse to stay serious about winning!
@@ccasey1904 You realise horses do not care about winning? If you have to force an animal to do something, it does not want to do it
@@nala8223 No, that is incorrect. Some horses like to be in front. Secretariat was notorious for having his own way as to how to win. Do some better research on the matter.

The horse thought the race was over as he had been running by himself hence no other horses were around but when covered by the others he soon realized he was in a race hence he got back in his stride and the rest is history
If the race had been any longer he'd have pulled up again, probably. ....from Ireland.
I was trying to read up about the horses breeding, age etc. Was he foaled in March 2005? And still racing? If so what a marvelous horse for 18 years old.
race was from 2010
If steeplechase is going to still exist, this is how it should be down. The jumps are so much better height
He was teasing the other horses 😂
The horse didn't "stop" - the rider pulled him up. It was a two mile race, the horse was waaaay ahead with a long way to go to the finish. Horse got a little breather and was probably happier running slower with the herd and had more than enough track left to pass the field again. Weird, but I can see what was going on.
His gallop is so smooth and effortless. No wonder he got so far ahead!
Im sure this was a Tony McCoy ride
Horse knows his job needed to be in the company of the rest
Horses are herd animals he just got lonely and they also know where the stables are and he had the best jockey on his back
My husband playing racing games...and he races the exact same way 😂😂😂
The race was at Haydock on 27th Oct 2010
i love how the whips werent being overused, if the had them.
Jockey did well not pushing nose when slowed making sure it wasn't injured
I heard Richard Migliore say horses are "heard animals" I think he got so far ahead and said "hey guys, I was just showing off, yall c'mon catch up" or something like that. He just got lonely@the top and just wanted to finish with the rest of his buddy's. They all high hoofed and head butted each other over hay and beer afterwards.
I never saw that horse stop or walk. He only slowed to a slower canter.
He may be a horse that has no desire to run alone and needs the competition
Now, that's a horse that always wants to be in the front. Great ride, although don't know what that slowdown was. Hope in the end, after all of that, over two miles, the jockey was using a bat and not a whip on one of the fastest horses on the face of the Earth!
Oh my goodness! I guess Drill Sargent likes to run with other horses and not alone….lol
Crazy
I love how there's an ambulance slowly following😂
🤔I don’t actually see how that’s funny…
That's standard. All race tracks have ambulances following the field. If a horse goes down and a rider is thrown, the rider hits the ground at 40mph and can be very seriously hurt. When that happens you don't want to have to dial 9-1-1. All major sporting events have medical teams right there in case of an accident.
The stables are to tge right, just passed the winning post.
Horse thought job done
An honest horse with an honest jockey trying his best, and probably thought he'd won. Racing was better when horses were allowed to try their best, but nowadays it's a favorite used as a pacemaker for his/her stablemate;disgusting, especially in Ireland.
This wasn’t long ago. Same antics went on back then as what goes on in racing today.
Pacemakers are nothing new.
Derring Rose used to pull this stunt too.
Wanted to see his friends.
It was a very good race, but I didn't like how he was whipping the horse at the end.
to think about it, one of those horses wound up in the slauter house..
Tony McCoy is a great jockey.
brother bob what a win horse name
wowee zowee & hurrah!
How horrible to see how those jockeys beat the poor animals. I cannot believe this is allowed in a country where animals are supposed to be respected. Shame on them!
It's ridiculous, there's actual whipping limits in racing. Like hitting a horse a dozen times isn't bad, but 13 times is. What kind of logic is that?
Everyone is commenting on the horse but if the jockey started to become unfocused that can easily be transferred to the horse. They are so in tune sometimes that whatever the rider thinks, it's picked up.
It's only because they are near the stables & he thinks it's time to go home bless him though :-)
Bless him he's competitive but not bright......Looks like he FORGOT what they were doing because he got so far out ahead. "Wait wait we gotta let everyone else catch up!"
"what?! no! thats.....the whole point is...."
"okay now that everyone's here, WE'RE STILL RUNNING!!"
AP Mckoy is No Toy
Maybe the horse knew something no one else did, it was Miller Time?
i think it likes the whip
He just wanted company thats all.
Why are these races so far? 2 miles? Geez!!
That horse was a show off. Lol 🤠
Intelligent breed 😂
Can anyone tell me why was he whipping the horse at the finish? Such a marvelous run and hard whipping at the end? Why the jockey doesn't receive such "a prize " along with his medal?
This happens in racing basically every time. It's the only way to get the horses to run like this in their eyes because properly training a horse requires a lot of patience and energy. It's fear and pain based motivation, which is the worst
Don't you have any more up to date racing to show?
Imagine if this was a positive ev tactic
Alright- the clip shown when the horse "stops" they slow to a canter not a walk-
Jesus, I thought MY ADHD was bad!😂
Jockey pulled him up for sure. He was in no rush to get him going again

Although I know lots about your mrs
He was lonely out in front on his own or that’s the way to the stables I would say

The name of the horse should changed to Spirit, this was the favorite children movie of my daughter. Actually the canadian singer Adam Bryan sings on the movie.
people forget horses are still horses, a herd animal, they dont like to be alone when running because why are they running? predator? did you notice him look back and thenslow down he seen the herd was way behind. once he was with the herd his goal was to be the lead horse, the higher horse of the herd. and if the jockey was really pulling and hitting causing pain that would triggor his flight or fight and the last thing he would want is to be alone, where a predator would pick him off first. but once in the herd again the competition to be lead horse begins. for horses your either higher or lower adn the herd is where safty is.
Why did he do that ?
The "Drill Sergeant" stopped to encourage his 'men'. lol
That was cool but you should never smack a horse that hard that many times
Looks like Drill Sgt was bored or lonely, hah
