Easily one of Tansman's most likable piano suites, the Tour of the World in Miniature features a cast of wonderful pieces that shift in atmosphere, tonality, and style. It takes the listener to soundspaces across the globe, and the contrast between each of the pieces sheds light on the uniqueness of those who dwell on it. As far as Tansman's output is concerned, this suite among his most concrete and impressionistic works.
One of the earliest neoclassicists, a conductor, a pianist, and a friend to famous figures from Charlie Chaplin to Thomas Mann, Alexandre Tansman (1897-1986) boasted one of the most internationally successful careers in music enjoyed by a Polish composer. He studied first with Wojciech Gawroński and later with Paderewski, Melcer-Szczawiński, and Birnbaum, but as he advanced further and further into his musical life, he began to draw influence from Dukas, Roussel, Stravinsky, Bartók, Schoenberg, and, perhaps most centrally, Ravel. Musically, Tansman effectively departs from the programmatic trend of late-romanticism, but he described himself as a fundamentally Polish composer, using Polish folk forms and imitating the spirit of folk melodies. Otherwise, Tansman's musical language dodges easy melodies and pre-conceived musical associations to bring the listener to new spaces rich with unique figurations that express music's peerless ability to interface with pure abstraction without concretizing it. In terms of achieving the goals of neoclassicism, Tansman consistently sought a new classical framework without adhering to the dogmatics of the artistic movement emerging as a result of the cultural pendulum swinging away from the concrete, the hyperbolic, and the emotional. Rather, Tansman built his own neoclassical style by removing the extra-musical and seeking to allow music to do what it is best at and to be what it most truly is.
Unbelievable music is reaching our ears thanks to technology. Simply mesmerizing.
Where has this guy been all my life???
"In 1932-1933, Tansman made an unprecedented artistic tour around the world - starting from the United States, through Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Ceylon, India and Egypt, to Italy." (Wikipedia). So I presume he really did visit all these places personally. Remarkable music.
Do not eat all what wikipedia gives to you ; be a human ; have a critical mind !
@@deodatdechampignac Tansman would have needed to rely on second-hand information if he didn't make this journey. But why make it up?
@@wrdna58 Yes Ok no challenge !
@@deodatdechampignac why would you assume the information is false?
@@erika6651 Because we have testimony on how he considered Poland ... for obvious reasons ...
Muy hermosa esta música.
Oh wow! Immediately a new favourite which no one could believe was never discovered before. Thanks for posting, the only time had heard of Tansman before was on a Godowsky recording, just a footnote. Perhaps he is another Gershwin.
* 15 kartek z podróży* 🤩😍Beautiful, fancy! Thank you for uploading! ❤
You know, that is much simpler lol
I love these pieces and that piano playing sure is zesty🎉❤
What a beautiful Tarantelle in the finale!!!! ❤
Amazing pieces, thank you for this discovery! Just a note, for IV. "Le marché aux oiseaux" translates to "The bird market", not "The march of birds" :)
Fixed, thanks.
💎😎
His guitar music is some of the best out there. Also wrote a few film scores. Check out Flesh and Fantasy.
I guess he really didn't like the Philippines haha, great stuff!
Allegro barbaro tempo marking. I hope it's irony
Slight cultural skill issue on their part he must've thought
I like the Tarantella
The last movement is clearly inspired by Chopin’s Tarantelle, am I right?
The IV. Reminds me of Ymo’s firecracker
Is this score online?
I was able to find it here: en.scorser.com/I/Sheet+music/300165498.html

No Brazil.
:/
The Philippines 👹👹👹
It reminds me of Godowsky's Java Suite.
This guy DID NOT enjoy the Philippines lmao
why
I'm also not sure where the character of the music suggests personal dislike
None is good to listen
Thank you :)
Tansman IS NOT a Polish composer ; he is a French composer. At the end of his life Poland tried to reconciliate with him, but as a jew, he fled away Poland. He became French (with a French passport, OK ??? LIKE CHOPIN , ok ??? ) ; he studied the music in France and was a close friend to Ravel and his musicians circle ! STOP with all those fake news from Polish wikipedia !
Are you seriously trying to claim that Chopin was a French composer? LOL
@@Jimsmith019 he was Franco-Polish ; and he had French passport and never had Polish passport ; and his name is Chopin and not Chopinski, n'est ce pas, Ducon ! the father of Chopin was born in Lorraine from where I am ; who is serious ? you ? make inquiries out of wikipedia!
@@deodatdechampignac Great - then I’m sure you will agree Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg were American composers!
@@Jimsmith019 Dear this is not a so good remark ! of course I will not agree :-) ; those composers had no American blood and no American culture ; contrary to Tansman (French culture) and Chopin (half French blood and more than half French culture) ! one wikipedia notice is very amusing : Bloch, a Swiss Jew composer becomes an American composer !
In the man's own words: "It is obvious that I owe much to France, but anyone who has ever heard my compositions cannot have doubt that I have been, am and forever will be a Polish composer"
