Efes (Hititçe: 𒀀𒉺𒊭 Apaša,[1] Eski Yunanca: Ἔφεσος Ephesos), Anadolu'nun batı kıyısında, bugünkü İzmir ilinin Selçuk ilçesinin üç kilometre güneybatısında yer alan antik bir Luvi şehriydi. Şehir Anadolu'da Yunan sömürgeciliğinin başlamasıyla birlikte İyonya ve daha sonra Roma dönemlerinde de önemini korumuştur. Kuruluşu Cilalı Taş Devri'ne yani MÖ 6000 yıllarına dayanır. MÖ 10. yüzyılda eski Arzava başkentinin yerine Attik ve İyonyalı Yunan kolonistleri tarafından inşa edilmiştir.
Klasik Yunan döneminde İyonya'nın on iki şehrinden biriydi. Şehir, MÖ 129'da Roma Cumhuriyeti ‘nin kontrolüne geçtikten sonra gelişti.
1994'te UNESCO tarafından Dünya Mirası Geçici Listesi'ne dahil edilen[2] Efes 2015'te ise Dünya Mirası olarak tescil edildi.[3]
Şehir antik Dünyanın Yedi Harikası'ndan biri olan yakındaki Artemis Tapınağı (M.Ö. 550; civarında tamamlandı) ile ünlüdür.[4] Diğer birçok anıtsal yapı arasında Celsus Kütüphanesi ve 25,000 seyirci alabilen II. Claudius zamanında başlanıp,Trajan (M.S..98-117) döneminde tamamlanan antik tiyatro da vardır.[5] Efes, Vahiy Kitabı ‘nda adı geçen Asya'nın yedi kilisesinden biriydi[6] Yuhanna İncili burada yazılmış olabilir.[7]
Ephesus (Hittite: 𒀀𒉺𒊭 Apaša, [1] Ancient Greek: Ἔφεσος Ephesos) was an ancient Luwian city located on the west coast of Anatolia, three kilometers southwest of the Selçuk district of today's Izmir province. The city maintained its importance during the Ionian and later Roman periods, with the beginning of Greek colonialism in Anatolia. Its foundation dates back to the Neolithic Age, that is, around 6000 BC. It was built by Attic and Ionian Greek colonists in the 10th century BC on the site of the ancient capital of Arzava.
It was one of the twelve cities of Ionia during the classical Greek period. The city flourished after it came under the control of the Roman Republic in 129 BC.
Ephesus, which was included in the World Heritage Tentative List by UNESCO in 1994, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015.[3]
The city is famous for the nearby Temple of Artemis (completed around 550 BC), one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World.[4] Among many other monumental buildings are the Library of Celsus and the World War II Palace, which can accommodate 25,000 spectators. There is also an ancient theater that was started during the reign of Claudius and completed during the reign of Trajan (98-117 AD).[5] Ephesus was one of the seven churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation.[6] The Gospel of John may have been written here.[7]
