When I won my school maths prize in 1971, I asked for a copy of Piston's 'Orchestration', which I'd spent many hours looking at in the school library (where I hid from games and PE). I'm no musician, I can hardly read music at all, but it was so clearly written, it added to my appreciation of scores. Then in later years, thanks to more stuff available, forst on cds, now on line, I got to hear some of his music. And I agree, a fine symphonist, who deserves to be played this side of the Pond as well as in his native land. BBC Radio 3 has the odd one on, but next time they ask for listener suggestions, I think I'll be making a case for dear old Walter. Peace & love (as we used to say back then)
Walter Piston is one of the greats . I ❤ all his music. A very distinct style. For me personally, the American big three are Copland , Piston, Barber. (Diamond, Menin , Bernstein, Harris , Schuman, Rorem ,Creston , Korngold , Persichetti.), etc.
I had never heard this symphony, and am deriving great pleasure from it. Thanks very much. I've learned that I must investigate more Piston. Your channel is quite a revelation to me. Much to explore. I wonder if I'm the only one who was put in mind of Bruckner by the opening held chord here. Perhaps it's related somehow to the lower opening chord in B's 4th symphony. I don't know enough about music to say whether or how. And the held chord here at 3:58 is also a favorite Bruckner held chord.
way more interesting than classical composers,by far

+dailowe Interesting anecdote. thanks for sharing.
which of his symphonies are your favorites? Mine are the 4th, 6th, and then the 7th and 8th, in roughly that order...
Walter Piston is simply brilliant!!! I love all his symphonies. This one is mesmerizing. I never tire of it!!!

Thanks for posting this in full quality sound. For large orchestra pieces like this it really makes a difference in the listening experience!
I heard it first live at the University of Maryland a couple of weeks ago. What a gem!
It's instructive what a big sound Piston gets from his orchestra!
Beautiful work!

A fine symphony by one of America's great, and neglected, composers. This is the first time I've heard this one - who is the conductor?
Robert Whitney, Louisville Orchestra
Please Who are the conductor
and the orchestra?
