- All you need to make a box with wood hinges is a table saw and of course a little bit of sanding. But you don't need a drill, a scroll saw, a router, a chisel or a dado stack. In this video I show you how you can make wooden hinges with my super simple single blade box joint jig. • Wie stellt man Fingerz...

I do Stephan. I've used the Incra wooden hinge template for years and it does make beautiful precision hinges. But your technique incorporates the hinge into the very carcass of the box itself. I may change up a few things..........like letting the lid overlap the front a bit to create an easy lift lid. But I will definitely use this method on my next hinged box.
FWIW, I will be sure to send the credit your way. Thanks again.
Great video, with music to suit inspired work ! Faced with a need, I made one search for Wooden hinges; first clik THIS ! INSPIRED ! That same night I drew an 180 offset version, and the next day I made it in red oak with a mahogany keeper. Thank you Stephan !
Love the box, love the music, LOVE the height gauge!!! Very nice tool. Very nice box. Well done.
Without any doubt, the best woodworking video I've seen in a long while. Teriffic idea. I'm going to use this technique for the wooden hinge on a gate leg table with a folding leaf and swing out leg. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for you comment, Tom!
So simple and nice looking. I hate usual metal hinges and necessarily will steal this idea! Thank you Stephan!
I never thought I will ever say these words: "I am really happy if you steal it!" :)
Heh! I will steal but only with remark about author!)
you only steal with your internal body cam and to be on the safe side, it's stored on the body's own hard drive.
Very clever way to make the hinge! Definitely something to try!
Very ingenious hinges!
Thank you Mikel!
Wow! Its awesome the great wonderful wooden box!
Tja, so einfach kann es gehen. Klasse Video !
thank you so much, sir. Your work is amazing and your willingness to help others is greater than your work if that is possible...be well...Jim
The guy can work. Fantastic !
That little box was gorgeous and the hinge really set it off. That plain clear finish was the cherry on top! My wife would love a little box like that. You did a fantastic build. Simple, yet elegant! Awesome, just awesome.
Thank you 😊
Great idea, sir, thnx for uploading, I m amazed
Neat little box. Well done 😊 Thank you ॐ
Thank you!
I like very much your videos. Thank for share it.
I was fascinated with how you "drilled" the long hole accurately for the concealed wire👍in both parts. Very clever way to do that, and hope I can remember for the future sometime.
Thank you for your comment!
I did not see the "drilling of the long hole". Did I miss something?
@@robira1313, at 1:18 he shows a hinge pin in a channel and a strip of wood filling the gap behind the pin. It is not drilled but a perfect hinge channel being made with the table saw. It's brilliant.
BRILLIANT!!! Thanks for information.
Thank you for your comment.
thanks for the video, really good way to hinge a box.
Very clever idea, must have a go trying it out 👌
What a a nice hinge application. Thank you for explaining it.
Thank you for your comment.
Intresting miter gate you got.Love it.
Going to try this very soon. One thing I plan to use a stainless steel spoke from an old bicycle wheel. 2 mm is standard and cheap.thanks for the great idea.
I had seen another person drill a hole for his. I was wondering how he could insure accuracy, since he basically free hand it with an electric drill.
I, rellally like your solution much better. It is quick amd very simple to do.
Thank you for sharing amd teaching us this method.
You're a real craftsmen, thanks for sharing... Music was good too!
Thank you!
Nice work!
I'll have to say that's the first time i've seen that technique used to make box joints! Too much math for me, I just make em with a jig and index key. Great video and brilliant problem solving skills!
Man that is awesome and I love the music thank you for sharing.
Thank you :)
very nice idea for the hinge thank you *o*
Thank you!
Great box. I love the idea of wooden hinges .
Thank you 😊
What an amazing technique. Simple yet so practical. Very enjoyable video.
Thank you :-)
This is a really good idea. Thank you for the video. It was very helpful
Wow. I saw many interesting ideas, thanks. The hinge kingpin was a surprice. I have been wondering how to do that. And the dovelling system was nice too. The blade height measurement tool was ingenious! Moreover thanks for the music which I was able to listen unlike 99.9% of the RUclips videos.
Thank you 😊
Wow! So clever and so simple! 👍
Thank you!
Now that is brilliant!
Thank you James!
So simple .... once you've seen how. Will definitely have to have a go at this. Thanks :)
Thank you for your comment Simon.
Now I really have to make the box joint set of spacers, this is brilliant and would be a great gift box for small gift, a gift within a gift...:). Cat was very well behaved today. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for your comment!
:D Very clever Stephan, Nice work and thanx for sharing!
Thank you!
very ingenious mate. looking forward to seeing more of your work. thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you for your comment
lg Rene
Danke Rene für deinen Kommentar!
I've been turning magic wands and now the young magician asked me to make boxes to them. This looks like a nice desing that I'll try to use.
MUITO BOM, PARABÉNS!!!!
nice work.simple and clever
Thank you!
Behind simple works, there's always big and clever ideas. My respects from the Caribbean Shore of PR.
Thank you!
You are welcome. Blessings for you and your family as well. Deeply appreciate your kind reply.
Great Video! Great project! I think I will have to make some hinges now:) Thanks for making this.
Thanks for your comment
looking well ,,love to try one ,,
Thank you pieter for your comment!
Wooow great box congratulations
Thank you :)
Very, very clever way to make a hinge. The hinge pin hole is always the difficult part. This technique solves that. Like others, I'm stealing this idea. Thanks for posting.
I am glad you like it :)
Well done
Gute Idee, werde ich mir merken.
Dankeschön!
Wow. Very nice.
Thanks
Very nice
Sehr gut Danke
thank you .You make it look super easy:) absolutely beautiful box and hinges.
Thank you very much!
Stephan Pöhnlein i should thank you for sharing this great idea:) im sure we all are waiting for the video on making those blocks :-),
Coming soon!
I like your solution for getting the long hole for the rod. I tried unsuccessfully to drill into the fingers with a long bit but gave up and "cheated" by only drilling the outer three at each end and pinning them. I considered that this would be a strong enough hinge.
nice work.simple and clever.TU
Thanks!
That's fantastic! I need a birthday present for next week. I need to get started.
Thank you and good luck!
Great vid, love the NO TALK that angers so many, and I play clawhammer banjo .....
GREAT, I am subscribed
Thank you and welcome to my channel :)
Absolut Spitze , ich bin begeistert.
Super Arbeit.
You have the one missing step I didn't have.. Thanks
Thanks for your comment
brilliant!
Thank you!
No thank you. I'm getting ready to build a wine gift box and have been struggling with an idea for its lid. It's supposed to have some rustic flair. I think this type of lid will be perfect!
That is cool!
Thank you Willem!
AND I love the Kitty Cat perch you have there so your cat can keep an eye on you! Funny!
:-)
whoops, @ 2:10, thats not a tablesaw! Just jokin'! great vid. Sometimes harder with a tablesaw than with hand tools!! Also, great to see cam clamps!! I just noticed that great sanding block look alike!
Nice
I SEE YOU HAVE A QUALITY INSPECTOR IN THE SHOP. LOL
Mega likaso
Love the saw blade height gauge - is there a video for that?
This nice bro, tnx for sharing it with the world!! (New suscriber here) 😀👍🏻👌🏻👊🏻🗜📐🛠
Hrmmm back a board out of a table saw - ya that sounds like a good idea.
Nice video, nice box :-)
Thank you!
Love those hinges. I at first i was wondering 'How did he drill all the way through like that?' Great job!
One question, you created the finger joints then rounded them on a belt sander, would it work as well if you rounded them on a router then created the fingers? I know the focus of the video was only with a table saw, but I am new to wood working and thinking of different skills as I watch and learn.
Of course, you can also use a router but for such a small box it is a overkill. It really works great if you sand it round by hand.
Now that's clever.
....and I'm afraid I'm going to steal it too !!! (there's no shame on here, is there?)
Thank you Stewart.
Sweet little box. Nice video. Sub!
Thank you 😊
Amazing box will be using the idea to make boxes to hold dial calipers for my metalwork teacher at the end of the year. By the way, what is that amazing music you have playing through the video?
Thank you! Information about the music is in the description :)
Danke
Stephan, this is truly very clever, at what depth did you run the slot for the wire? was it like half way up the finger joints or something? very curious as i want to use your idea
Thank you, yes the depth is a half finger + the thickness of the rod
How about that! I just might try this but, I dunno. I am simply not in your league. You, sir, are highly skilled. RUclips videos don't often impress me but this one did. Subscribed - just because you're fun to watch.
Thank you very much for your nice comment.
I have watched your box finger jig using a single blade and would love to know how you made it. Do you have plans?
Sorry I have no plans but here is another video in German ruclips.net/video/MX8bKZ3YBqc/видео.html maybe it helps.
great video. I am going to try this. Could you please tell how deep and width of the groove as well as the size of the rod? Thank you.
Great video I’m going to try this! Quick question what was the depth you cut the dado to?
Very interesting this I must try really like the way you made box hinge. By the way what was the m.usic
Thank you. You find all information about the music in the video description.
Nice cat
interesting video. Thanks for posting, but had to run on silent after about 45 seconds as the music got old really quickly!
A great box, which table saw are you using?
Thank you, I use a Festool TS 55 and the Festool CMS.
Do you have any plans for the table saw height gage ? Love your videos. Give Moritz a hug !
Thank you! Here is a video about this height gauge: ruclips.net/video/-aOCc7StPlI/видео.html
If you have more questions, please ask again.
CleverFello ................. JRW
Ja, gibt es hier :ruclips.net/video/qGRspK8RtVg/видео.html&index=7&list=PLMgLB9DSu_X-tEZvt0Kev8SyEn1Tz_3xD
cool music!
thanks!
Interesting method of finger/box jointing; your own idea of the spacers to advance the blade? Or where did you find it?
How do you determine the DEPTH for your rod slot? Do you find PINE holds up well enough, or is hardwood necessary for hinges on frequently opened boxes?
Thank you for your comment Mark. Yes the spacers are my idea, but maybe it is not new. Here is a video about this Method: ruclips.net/video/kbgnnsilyxM/видео.html. The depth of the rod slot is the half of the thickness of the board plus the thickness of the rod. For small boxes, pine works fine :)
I didn't see it clearly shown, but to keep the rod from the bottom of the slot you used a thin sliver of wood about half the thickness of the board and the same width of the slot that was glued into the slot in both pieces, then the rod was placed on top( temporarily ) of that and another sliver of wood was used to fill up the difference which was sanded down to flush...is this correct? I'm assuming this is so since the rod cannot be at the bottom. I really like this way...it looks so much more elegant and it's all wood. I have started making some small jewelry boxes and other types of small storage boxes with the box joints and having this jointed top will look great with the rest of the box jointed. Oh, I live here in in U.S.A. so I have a dado set that I use for my box joints...sure makes it easy. Thank you very much for sharing this with us, I really appreciate it.
I don't follow you here abotu the sliver of wood; have to re-watch it, but a wooden dowel is plenty strong, so metal rod isn't necessary. Separate individual wooden knuckle joint hinges, using long grain cuts (vs. short grain here) are sufficiently strong too, though a totally different approach. This one-piece (back & hinge unit) is unique.
Thank you for your comment. I don't know if it was all clear. so here is a short explanation:
First I made the slot with my table saw, then I put the rod, which has the same thickness as my table saw blade, in the slot, Then I glued the sliver, which has also the same thickness as my table saw blade in, to close the gap and sanded it down. I hope this helps.
Stephan Pöhnlein oh, the thin strip for the filler you mean, I understood that. I thought the other comment was suggesting some other sliver that I never noticed underneath the rod verses on top of it. I think I follow everything here. Great job.
I see you have your cat supervising :)
It's called a CAT-SCAN! Lol
man....Du gibst ja Gas in letzter Zeit.
Nice. But you should of put cat treats in it... 👍
Lovely idea, going to try and make one myself. But I am a little confused, at 2:52 you appear to cut a half slot on the table saw, but by 3:02 when you are sanding it, it appears to be a full width slot. Or am I seeing things? Notwithstanding that, thank you for an excellent video.
Thank you Dennis. You've been watching this very closely! As a matter of fact, first it was a half slot but I shortened that again later :-)
Thank you Stephan. It was a video worth watching closely! Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Just one more question, please. Are all the dimensions shown on your blocks in cm? What is the size of the three black blocks, in cm? Thank you very much!
yes all dimensions in cm. The size for the black blocks is 1 cm minus the thickness of your sawblade for 1cm fingers, for 1,5 cm fingers it is 1,5 minus the thickness of your sawblade, for 2 cm fingers it is 2cm minus the thickness of your sawblade.
